You arrive in front of this Statue dedicated to St. Francis protector of animals by taking the path that leads to the Convent of the Friars above Monterosso. From here you can enjoy a truly exceptional and sublime view, it is worth going to this place at least once in a lifetime.

After a Great Walk to do we have a very nice view ... although the statue itself is not very interesting

The statue is up on a big hill. This Saint happened to to the patron Saint of my high school in the US. It’s a nice statue. As far as statues go.

Truly suggestive panoramic point, you have to take some steps to get there but it is not absolutely prohibitive, reachable for everyone, The statue of St. Francis makes the point even more special

This landmark statue of St Francis of Assisi stands high above Monterosso and looks down over the old town and out across the Ligurian Sea. From here, you have a breathtakingly panoramic view. It is also a beautifully serene spot.
The walk up is steep but its short and is absolutely worth it. The path is very manageable and the climb is gradual.
The start of the path was not immediately obvious to us. From the old town side, we found it just before the entrance to the pedestrian tunnel that links the old and new towns. As you head towards the tunnel, the path is on your left but is tucked away behind the buildings.
Apart from the amazing view, the statue itself is a relatively modern bronze piece. In 1960 Fr Daniele da Pra from the Convent of Monterosso, had the vision of a large devotional statue dedicated to St. Francis and the artist Silvio Monfrini was commissioned. The bronze was cast in Lombardy, then parcelled up and transported by train to Monterosso in 1962. It must have been a difficult job to put it in place. Apparently crowds turned out to watch.
The statue shows a famous scene from St Francis’ life when he tamed the vicious wolf of Gubbio. The saint bows down slightly to greet, or perhaps to bless, the wolf. In return, the wolf, instead of snarling or lunging for the saint’s throat, holds a submissive paw up.
The statue is placed on a small balcony like platform and from here, you can look down upon the 16th century Torre Aurora. A little higher up, above the statue, is the Capuchin Friars Monastery and church.
The first time we visited Monterosso, we didn’t walk up here. Probably having hiked all day long, we thought we’d walked enough already. What a mistake that was and I’m very glad that we did it this time around.

steep uphill steps to view. Well worth it. Make sure you go all the way up to the top of the cemetery.

I am in Monterosso, planning to go there tomorrow, but I can’t find the path to reach the monument. How to get there?
Skrevet 5. oktober 2023
I had a knee replacement is this a trek one can make. Is the path solid or rocky?
Skrevet 6. mars 2017
Hi
The path was fairly solid and I would say would take no more than 30 minutes. It's a great view from the top and definitely worth the hike.
Regards, Clare.

I am Kenneth from Singapore. I shall be spending a brief stopover on 2/1/2017 in Monterosso on 3/1/2017 (as I have business trip in Milan through the new year - and I only could afford a day train trip from Milan to Monterosso - my train departs Milan 0800am and arrives Monteross 11am) - so I probably could only spend 4-5 hours and have to catch the train at 5pm to return to Milan - hence, I would be most appreciative if you could advise me - how and where is the easiest start point to climb up the hill that lead to Statue of St Francis Assisi in the old town, and how much time (or how long the round trip up and down the hill on foot) roughly it takes from start to the point where the panoramic spot that offers breathtaking view of the old town and coastal areas. Thank you in advance for your valuable precious information

It will take about 30 minutes to climb to the top to see the statue of the saint. It is located near Old Town tunnel. Do not go past the tunnel but climb the path that leads to the top. As stated, many great views from the top. The cemetery near the top is beautiful, a great tribute to many who have died.
