Initially it may look like the Basilica while in reality it is attached to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and is a funeral chapel built at the behest of Bartolomeo Colleoni. It is located in Piazza Duomo and at the entrance a gate where the three symbols of Colleoni's coat of arms are touched. Free admission or better specified free offer, inside you can not take pictures. He deserves entry.

As if woven from lace, this chapel occupies the right side of the north facade of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Built by order of the captain of the Republic of Venice, the condottier Colleoni from 1472 to 1476 on the site of the ancient sacristy of the Basilica, it is a magnificent example of the Lombard Renaissance. Dedicated to St. Bartholomew, St. Mark and St. John the Baptist, the chapel was created as a Colleoni mausoleum.
The architect Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, who was also one of the architects of the famous Pavia Certosa monastery, was invited to carry out this project. The chapel was designed to attract the attention of the viewer from afar. The octagonal dome and its crowning tower echo the dome of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, and the multicolored facade, decorated with diamonds of various colors and numerous sculptural elements, blends perfectly with the marble portal of the Basilica, made in the mid-14th century by the master Giovanni da Campione.
Inside the chapel is the burial place of the condottier Bartolomeo Colleoni and his youngest daughter Medea. The chapel has been decorated by various craftsmen for several centuries. The sarcophagus of Colleoni and his daughter Medea was designed by architect Amadeo, and the gilded equestrian statue of the condottier was created in 1501. In the 1930s, the great Giovanni Batista Tiepolo was invited to Bergamo to paint the vaults and walls of the chapel, and the wooden inlays were made in 1773 by the Bergamian master Giovanni Cagnana, and the architect Leopold Pollack participated in the creation of the altar in the early 19th century. This multifaceted decoration of the chapel creates a unique appearance.

It is practically attached to the Basilica so as to form a whole. Bartolomeo Colleoni and his daughter are buried there. It is not possible to take photos inside. An offer is welcome.

The Colleoni family was a wealthy Bergamo family with unusual coats of arms - there are three testicles!
One of the most illustrious members was Bartolomeo Colleoni (1395-1475) who created this private chapel which is also open to the public. It is backed by the basilica and continues the magnificent style of decoration of it with its richly decorated white facade.
There is the funerary monument of Bartolomeo but also his favorite daughter Medea. The frescoes are painted by Tiepolo - so it is a truly unique work of art in the city.
You can't take pictures inside but there are so many things to admire that every detail takes your breath away. An example of architecture reminiscent of Florence too

The Colleoni Chapel (pictured on the right) is worth a visit! Located right next to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
The chapel is small but very rich; free entrance.
Inside it is forbidden to take pictures.
Look for the story of the leader Bartolomeo Colleoni, it is very interesting!

This is the top masterpiece of Bergamo. There’s no way you come to Bergamo and miss this place.
It was built between 1472-76 as a mausoleum for condottieri Bartolomeo Collenoi and his daughter Medea. You have to pay for the ticket, and pictures are not allowed, not even at an extra charge.
Since it´s not a church, but intended as a private building, the facade shows a variety of themes, like Roman emperors or the works of Hercules.
Check the opening hours, because it closes at noon, reopens in the afternoon and closes again around 6:00pm

The magnificent facade distinguishes it from the church it stands next to. It is consider an authentic Italian Renaissance masterpiece. No photos allowed inside, but it is well worth a visit

We’ve been to many churches around the world but this place is number one and unique. The outside is amazing enough but inside is at another level. Photos don’t do it justice . The whole interior is quite a sight to behold and you could easily spend an hour or two admiring it all. Go very early to avoid the charges. We went in without paying before they manned the ticket area so was very fortunate.

From an artistic point of view the Chapel is exceptional and in describing it it is difficult to make a synthesis of the many historical data, the different styles that overlap it starting from the Renaissance, the many decorations, the many symbolic meanings. Perhaps wanting to describe it is also useless, just admire its facade that changes appearance depending on the light, which catches the eye with every detail. The leader with his explosive personality wanted a worthy tomb, almost crushing the facade of the adjacent church, overlooking those who enter with his equestrian statue, still marvelling today with the signs of his power. To appreciate the visit more it would be appropriate to inquire about the many curiosities that the Chapel holds. A note of tenderness for this strong man-at-arms is the grave of her much-loved daughter who died young, inside which a stuffed bird dear to her was found. If you ask the caretaker he will show you the glass dome in which it is stored. The interior is not photographable, the keepers well enforce the prohibition, you do not pay ticket but wanting to leave an offer. However, it is unpleasant in the context the souvenir market, which is now found in almost all churches but in this not so large environment disturbs even more. A Colleoni sicuramente non sarebbe piaciuto!
