The early Christian basilicas of Milan are the first Christian churches built in the city starting in 313, immediately after Constantine's Edict of Milan, which admitted Christianity among the religions practiced in the Roman Empire. Most were built in the late Roman Empire during the period in which the Roman city of Mediolanum (modern Milan) was the capital of the Western Roman Empire (a role it held from 286 to 402).
Saint Eustorgio was a bishop of Milan in the 4th century, His legendary Life has it that Eustorgio, of Greek origins, was sent to Milan by the emperor as governor of the city. Upon the death of Protaso, as would later happen for Saint Ambrose, unanimously chosen as the new bishop of the city. The elected bishop then went to Constantinople, together with the Milanese notables, to communicate his choice to the emperor and obtain confirmation, which he achieved without difficulty. On this occasion, the emperor gave Eustorgio a marble ark with the relics of the Three Wise Men, which the bishop transferred to Milan and placed in the basilica he had built, today's Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio.
Inside the Basilica you can see two masterpieces: the painting made by Camillo Procaccini (1561-1629) depichting the martyrdom of St. John the Baptist and the wonderful polyptych of the Passion, on the main altar

The Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio is one of the oldest churches in Milan. The style is early Christian and Romanesque and represents a place where legend and reality tend to merge, as it is the place where the relics of the three kings are. Simple interior with three naves with fragments of frescoes still visible.

The basilica was probably founded around 344. The current church can be dated to the 12th century and has undergone several rebuildings. Of interest is the altarpiece, which is a masterpiece from the 14th century. Many chapels with fine furnishings.

Beautiful basilica, until around 1100 the Magi were buried there, there is the sarcophagus which contained the remains. Outside the emblematic statue of San Giovanni and then the Portinari Chapel

After taking care of some things this morning I went for a short visit to the ancient basilica of Sant'Eustorgio, to which so much history and legends are linked.
The pearl is certainly the Portinari Chapel (admission fee), but the entire church is full of works of art and other valuable artefacts. Dominating the central nave, for example, stands the thirteenth-century Crucifix, renamed by the people "el Signur de la féver" (= the Lord of the fever). While on the main altar the wonderful Ancona della Passione stands out, a stupendous marble polyptych from the late 14th century attributed to Jacopino da Tradate. The ark of the Magi and the many works scattered in the side chapels and between the naves cannot be missed.
Among the curiosities I point out the house located to the right of the basilica, where the first baptismal font opened in Milan in the apostolic era is preserved, blessed by Cardinal Federico Borromeo exactly four centuries ago, on 28 October 1623.
This basilica is also one of those unmissable destinations when visiting the city.

Yesterday I revisited this church which is the third mother church of the Diocese of Milan, after the Duomo and Sant'Ambrogio; in fact a new Archbishop of Milan, upon his entry into the city after his appointment, is the first to enter this church.
Here is the sarcophagus which contained the remains of the Three Wise Men, brought to Milan in 344 (then capital of the Western Roman Empire) and remained here until the destruction of the city by Barbarossa in 1162, when they were stolen and taken in Cologne; only in 1903 a very small part of the relics was brought back to this basilica.
The Portinari Chapel is extremely interesting, in Renaissance style and containing the stupendous burial of St. Peter the Martyr, a Dominican friar who was head of the Lombard Inquisition in the 13th century and killed by a hitman hired by heretics in 1252.
The Saint is also remembered by a column in front of the church which has his statue on top and by the external pulpit from which he preached.
The story of the hitman is curious: struck by the words of forgiveness pronounced on the point of death by the Saint and regretting his act, he became a Dominican lay brother and lived in the convent of Forlì for forty years in prayer and repentance, he died in the odor of sanctity and in the nineteenth century he was proclaimed Blessed.
Another curiosity: the bell tower is not surmounted by the classic cross, but by the eight-pointed star of the Three Kings.
An absolutely unmissable stop in Milan!

The Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio is one of the oldest and most important churches in Milan, located in the square near Porta Ticinese. The painted Crucifix, located above the presbytery, is notable. The Portinari chapel is absolutely worth visiting. Nice area of Milan, easily reachable by tram.

The basilica of Sant'Eustorgio is located in the Porta Ticinese area and its construction dates back to the 4th century, in the late imperial Roman era, which was then followed by multiple transformations. Externally it has a brick facade with the classic hut shape, onto which there are three doors surmounted by as many mullioned windows. The interior with three naves does not present particular decorations nor does it contain works of art of particular value. However, noteworthy are some funerary monuments, some chapels, the curious stone sarcophagus which contained the relics of the Magi and the early Christian ruins. Despite its simplicity, it is still worth a visit. They can then be visited separately and for a fee (€6), with entrance from the cloister, the monumental sacristy and the beautiful Portinari Chapel where the Ark of St. Peter the Martyr is kept.

This stunning church is part of a large complex, along with the Portinari Chapel that contains amazing frescoes, such as ‘the Virgin with horns’ and Museo Diocesano. All of them are worth a visit.

La basilica e il museo sono aperti tutti i giorni dalle 10 alle 18. Per visitare il museo è necessario pagare un biglietto, che per gli adulti costa 6 euro. Buona visita
