The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana is a jewel in the heart of Milan that houses, among others, masterpieces by Botticelli, Titian, Raphael, Leonardo and Caravaggio.
The Library (where pages of Leonardo's Atlantic Codex are exhibited) and the Crypt are also stupendous. Excellent experience.

Nice museum, a stone's throw from the Duomo. Among the most important works is Caravaggio's Basket of Fruit, Raphael's preparatory cartoons of the School of Athens, but also Leonardo's only remaining painting in Milan, the Portrait of a Musician. In the last room are exhibited some extracts (in rotation) of the Atlantic Codex.

The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana was founded in the early seventeenth century by Cardinal Federico Borromeo, Archbishop of Milan and much younger cousin of St. Charles Borromeo, as an extension of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, which had been established, a few years earlier, by Cardinal Federico himself.
He donated all his many paintings to the new Art Gallery which, over the years, increasingly enriched its artistic heritage.
It now houses some unmissable masterpieces such as Leonardo's "Codex Atlanticus" and "Portrait of a Musician", Caravaggio's "Basket of Fruit", Raphael's "School of Athens" cartoon.
A place to visit absolutely.

As often happens in Italy, we have so much to see and visit. Two adults and a teenager we paid 44€ and the visit lasted an hour and a half. Better get a guide. It's worth it!

A place that surprises and leaves you speechless. The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana is an experience to live calmly, between incredible masterpieces and an atmosphere that seems suspended in time. Walking through its rooms is a privilege: Raphael's Cartoon, Leonardo's Portrait of a Musician and many other treasures are revealed in an elegant and intimate setting.
Every corner tells a story, every work deserves to be discovered carefully. A museum that is not expected and that remains in the heart.

Essential for lovers of painting, a real treat, but the museography is not very clear, it is rather reserved for connoisseurs I think. There is a lot to see, and you get lost in the meanders of these beautiful old buildings, you go up, you go down... and finally the superb library that we see in the photo, with the sketches and annotations of Leonardo da Vinci...

Palace 2 steps from the cathedral, beautiful already of its own with halls, courtyards and other well preserved that contains a
The excellent art gallery, depositary of masterpieces of great value, is really worth a visit: Caravaggio's fruit basket, the cartoon of the School of Athens, Leonardo's portrait of a musician (but also the Atlantic codex in a library room) are examples of the hundreds of works it contains with some examples of contemporary art.
Highly recommended, the ticket is valid for the whole day so you can go out (perhaps for a break) and then return.
It is highly recommended the ticket including a visit to the underground church of s. Sepulchre attached to the Art Gallery.

Judgment referring exclusively to management and organization, not to works.
Organization that could be improved with a little attention, at the entrance there are employees who explain how to access the guide on their smartphone, but after a while they fall out of style when they try to place acoustic headphones for a “symbolic amount” of one euro, obviously all without a receipt.
In the room, a control employee was often annoyed by any attitude of each person, often lacking politeness when trying to silence the audience by accentuating a “shhhhh!!” In a very uneducated way and in keeping with the environment.
If you enter during the last visiting hours you will not be able to visit the crypt because the staff will put you in a hurry, I recommend visiting it in the morning or early afternoon.
If you download the telematic guide make sure your smartphone is up to date with the operating system, otherwise it will not work (bad experience with iOS).
For two entrances we are about 20 € abundant per person, but the works on display are wonderful.

That's all right, tickets are not in line, and people are a little, not in each other's way.
In the collection there were pleasantly surprised paintings, mainly old Dutch. And another Italian artist of the 19th century. In general if there are more than 10 paintings in an exhibition or museum that surprised me (there must have been 15)then as they say got up for good reason.I don't all like, usually some story if it plays with new colors-I'm interested.Portraits of me do not impress, situations and their reading very even produce.Such in museums few, I think 5 percent.
Generally solid Thursday, best not to miss.

Is Leonardo da Vinci's Codex Atlanticus actually on display in the Ambrosiana Biblioteca? Is this a permanent display or temporary? According to the website entrance to the library is only by registration and acceptance by the librarian and the Codex is in the library????
Skrevet 16. april 2019
My understanding is that at any time there are selected pages from the Codex on display in a room at the Ambrosiana. We were there in November 2018 and saw pages that included notes on musical instruments and a few sketchy drawings. Obviously not da Vinci's greatest work, but exciting to see anyway.

Cost for adult entry via their website (which is a little complicated) is €16.50. We have been there on 3 different occasions at various times during July and August and never had to queue so I don’t think it is essential to buy tickets ahead of time for this particular venue. There are though sometimes combined tickets with other attractions that may offer some discount.
You definitely do though have to book ahead to see the Last Supper (superb) and the Duomo, whether it be just to go into the cathedral or walk on the ramparts.
Skrevet 14. mars 2018
About 15 euro, depending on your age and ticket package. You can buy them on line for a small fee, but this time of year there is no need to book ahead. Maybe in the summer you should.
Skrevet 14. mars 2018
It’s not crowded. There’s no line. Just some dozen of people,
not thousands like at the Duomo. But I allways prefer to buy in advance. Your choice.

Hello! Did you get an audioguide when you went? Would you recommend one? Thanks in advance
Skrevet 19. november 2015
I used an audio guide on one visit. I have moderate art background but found it useful. I also like exploring slowly, since the guide doesn't cover everything. I would definitely recommend one, depending on your own background. You definitely get more detail, and it gives you a chance to sit down and hear the explanation.
