With guided tour the complex of Sant 'Orso, is much more complete and interesting. It starts from the XI story of Bishop Anselm century to the XV century last remodeling of George of Challant. You are taken to the attic to see the Ottonian frescoes. The cloister with the stored columns. The private chapel of Bishop George of Challant frescoed by Franco Saluzzese artists. The interior of the church there is a base with mosaics and the crypt.

This site, in my opinion in a fairly small area, contains art and history so valuable that few other places can boast. First of all in front of the complex is the over a hundred-year-old lime tree (estimated age 450 -500 years) still standing and lush in summer even if with the trunk is almost torn and with side metal tie rods. Nowadays, seeing a tree half a millennium old with your own eyes is no small thing, as it is one thing to defend nature with slogans another to conserve it. Immediately next to the imposing square Romanesque bell tower entirely in stone, then the simple but austere entrance to the church. Inside, various frescoes but the part that most fascinates is the fifteenth-century wooden choir of fine workmanship rich in inlays and decorations. The cloister which is accessed with a small ticket (€ 2) has always fascinated both for its linearity and for the amount of characters, saints and other figures that are carved into the rock of each capital. It is a pleasant visit, which amazes and enriches us internally.

The complex, consisting of collegiate church, cloister, priory and bell tower, can be visited with Guide (rate 10€ + 1€ for frescoed photos); duration of the visit about an hour and a quarter if done in Italian and French. The complex is the result of buildings built or remodeled in different eras. The fifteenth-century interventions inside the collegiate church, commissioned by Prior George of Challant, have allowed the preservation of a cycle of eleventh-century frescoes, partly still visible and well explained by the Guide, located in the attic accessible through a series of stairs. The beautiful cloister has a long series of historiated capitals, in Aymavilles marble, unfortunately then covered with black paint, it seems to be the work of Spanish artists. Two beautiful specimens (unpainted and unfortunately not photographable) are temporarily visible inside the priory, on loan from Palazzo Madama in Turin. The Romanesque bell tower, isolated from the rest, has at its base boulders recovered from the Roman walls.

We visited the complex with guided tour and it was really exciting. It starts from the church and its frescoes, to the palace with a wonderful chapel, the porch with its capitals. Recommendation to also visit the crypt

With a Monferrato group volunteers for art from Piazza Chanoux we reach the collegiate church of Sant’Orso; the guides of the Mirabilia association await us, the first stop is the splendid cloister with its carved capitals depicting scenes from the Old, New Testament and life of Sant’Orso, patron saint of the artisans to whom the famous fair is dedicated in February.
The visit also offers the opportunity to admire the temporary exhibition “Reditus, il ritorno” in which two capitals were set up owned by Palazzo Madama in Turin, but coming from Sant’Orso, which have the original white color, not covered, like the rest of the cloister, by black painting laid out in subsequent centuries. Next to the frescoed chapel of the Challants.
We also appreciate the original frescoes preserved in the attics and the floor mosaic found under the current floor of the presbytery.

Beautiful visit. Very good and nice guide. Definitely worth seeing. Don't miss it. Beautiful story that speaks of its frescoes and the capitals of the Cloister (about 40 and all different from each other), with very interesting meanings. The Church and the Cloister can be visited normally, but the cheap guided tour is a must, because you see places not accessible to the public and you learn the meaning of everything you see. Very close to the historic center of Aosta.

The cloister of Sant'Orso dates back to the beginning of the 12th century. There are 40 capitals and each one tells a story, at the entrance (3 euros) they give an explanatory sheet. The capitals are made of marble, the dark color comes from an oxidized protective paint. Inside the church you can also visit a crypt. The bell tower, from the 12th century, is 44m high.

Important testimony of Aosta Valley sacred art. This complex must be visited with a guide (very good) who will make everything extremely interesting. Absolutely worth visiting.

Really beautiful church located just off the main street of Aosta. Very interesting complex that should be seen on a guided tour. You can also see the old frescoes that remained on the upper parts of the walls of the main nave after the 15th century renovation.
