This large, majestic Baroque building is located in Dorsoduro at the entrance to the Grand Canal and is very impressive.
It was built in 1630 in honor of the relief from the plague epidemic and therefore carries “salute” in its name, which means health.
Every year on November 21 there is a celebration in which churchgoers walk to the church over a specially constructed pontoon bridge.
Inside, the church is strikingly sober, but light, which is completely different from all other churches in Venice.

We visited this church because we wanted to climb the Capula. We were told there is a guide that can take you up every 30min. We saw signs to wait for the guard, and waited quite a while, but no one ever showed up. The church itself wasn't that impressive.

The Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute is one of the most beautiful churches in Venice. In Gothic style, with several works by Titian, it is located in the art gallery area of the city.

Magnificent basilica with an emblematic silhouette BUT unfortunately partially covered by scaffolding (which fortunately does not spoil its interior beauty) and what's more, there are scammers lurking there who try to make you pay for free entry... I can't imagine chaos in the middle of the tourist season.

Beautiful church with a central plan built on the occasion of the plague of 1650. In the sacristy there are also a Tintoretto and a Titian (admission fee of €4.00) but I was unable to enter because there was mass. The location along the canal is also very suggestive.

I read that it is the most photographed building in Venice. It was built to mark the end of the plague epidemic. We walked through the Dorsoduro region, turning from the nose of this church. It looks beautiful from over the Accademia bridge. 📸

This church was built in the 17th century, at the end of the terrible plague epidemic which claimed around 80,000 victims in Venice alone. The dedication to the Virgin was, at the same time, a thanks for the end of the scourge and an invocation that she would avoid the repetition of similar tragedies. The Venetian architect Baldassarre Longhena was entrusted with the project, who conceived a grandiose building in rich Baroque style with an octagonal plan with two hemispherical domes and two bell towers. To make room for the new church it was necessary to demolish an older one, dedicated to the SS. Trinity. The works ended in 1687, with the inauguration celebrated by the patriarch of Venice Alvise Sagredo. In 1921 the church was raised to the rank of lower basilica by Benedict XV.
The main facade is dominated by the majestic entrance portico, flanked by four Corinthian capital columns and crowned by an elegant balustrade; in as many niches the statues of the Four Evangelists stand out. The main dome stands on an elaborate base, connected to the underlying structure by sixteen large connecting volutes, each crowned by a statue. A dome of the same design, but smaller, rises behind the main one, between two bell towers that rise at the rear of the building. Seen from above, the church takes on the appearance of a crown to be ideally placed on the head of the Virgin.
The interior, almost circular in shape, appears a little more sober and less sumptuous than the exterior. Natural light pours in from the eight large pairs of large windows in the drum and from others of a semicircular shape placed further down, creating spectacular effects on the walls and on the beautiful polychrome marble floor. The majestic high altar immediately catches your attention, designed in its general lines by Longhena himself. The sculptural groups that adorn the artefact are works by the Flemish artist Giusto le Court: the main one, placed on the upper part, depicts the Madonna and Child who drives away the plague (represented by a shady witch who is about to throw herself into the void) from Venice ( in turn allegorized by a female figure in an adoring attitude). The altar houses, behind two golden doors finely crafted in bas-relief, an ancient Byzantine icon dedicated to the Virgin "Mesopanditissa" (from the Greek "peacemaker"); the precious object, originally kept on the island of Crete, was brought to Venice in 1670 by the Doge Francesco Morosini, to take it away from the Turks who were conquering, one after the other, all the possessions of the Serenissima in the Aegean Sea.
Among the other works that adorn the church, I would like to point out a valuable canvas by Tiziano Vecellio: "The descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles". Also worth seeing is the sacristy, where works by Titian himself (“San Marco enthroned”) by Tintoretto (“The Wedding at Cana”) by Giovan Battista Salvi known as Sassoferrato, etc. are exhibited.
On November 21st of each year (the day of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple) the Venetians celebrate the Madonna della Salute in the presence of this church, which they reach in procession directly from Piazza San Marco on a floating bridge built each time for the occasion, and then dismantled.

Impressive dome, paintings by Titian, chapel where services are held, etc. Free entrance. It owes its name to the fact that it decided to be built after the city overcame the plague epidemic and as gratitude for the supposed divine help to make that happen. Stunning views of the San Marcos area. It is advisable to return to St. Mark's Square by taking a "traghetto" (shared gondola ride to cross the Grand Canal).
