We were struck by the bright interior, the tall, fluted columns, and the many niches, seventeen in all, that display statues of the 12 apostles, as well as the saints Mark, Luke and John.
The large marble main altar is decorated with statues. The marble altars in the chapel contain statues and paintings.
Paintings depict scenes from the Old Testament.

San Nicolò all'Arena is an interesting church standing at the same place where in the twelfth century there had been a romanesque temple. The present building is in baroque style with the exception of the imposing front façade which is neoclassical. On that façade four fluted columns are outstanding, their base being slightly wider than their top. The columns capitals are in ionic order. A remarkable plain triangular tympanum rests on the aforesaid columns. Between the two columns nearest to the center there is the main portal. There are two smaller portals on each side of the main one between the last mentioned columns and the other two, respectively. A bell tower is located at the rear part of the building.
Once inside one can realise that it's a single nave church. The walls are white painted, but the elements protruding from the walls, as the pilasters and the arch edges are ochre. Altogether gives a rather nice impression. The pilaster capitals are in composite order, thereby enhancing the beauty of the ornamental aspect of the temple. On the sides of the nave there are some side chapels, the altarpiece of one of them consists in a painting by Antonio Balestra depicting St. John the Baptist in the desert. It's a rather nice work worth being contemplated.
The arches through which one accedes to the said chapels are semicircular, and the ceiling is a barrel vault: two elements typical of the romanesque style.
The chancel is narrower than the nave and quite long. The ancient high altar is very attractive, particularly the elaborate altarpiece consisting of three levels with a profusion of little marble columns of two different colours supporting the second and the third levels respectively. Quite fascinating is a small statue representing St. Nicholas located in a niche in the middle of the items on the second level.
The pulpit on the left hand side upon entering the temple and a not very big organ behind the high altar as well as the dome on the transept are also worth being observed.
As inferred from the foregoing, San Nicolò all'Arena church is an extremely interesting building which is indeed worth being visited while Verona.

A Romanesque church existed on this site from the 12th century but that church was rebuilt in a Baroque style between 1627 and 1683 although the plans to build a dome and place stone cladding on the facade never materialised. The facade remained incomplete until, between 1951 and 1953, the facade of the church of San Sebastiano was relocated to the church of San Nicolo. The church of San Sebastiano was largely destroyed by bombing during WWII but its facade, which had been built in 1830, had survived largely intact. This new facade, which required some changes to accommodate the larger church of San Nicolo, gave San Nicolo a neoclassical look. There are four very tall Ionic columns which support a triangular tympanum. There is one main large portal in the middle and a smaller portal either side. Each of these are topped with pediments and above them are empty niches.
Internally there is a single nave with two chapels on each side facing Corinthian pillars. There are seventeen niches around the walls that contain statues of the images of the 12 apostles plus Christ, Saints Mark, Luke and John and the Immaculate conception. Above these are 18 paintings depicting scenes from the Old Testament. The barrel ceiling is very plain. The altars in the four chapels are quite lovely with masses of marble as is the main altar, which was built in 1630, and is quite impressive with a number of statues either side.

It is located in the historic center of Verona, a 2-minute walk from the Arena Amphitheatre. The interior is in the shape of a Latin cross with a single nave.

Close to the Amphitheatre, it is one of the few Veronese churches from the 1600s, a period in which the city was heavily affected by the plague. The church has a single nave and four chapels. Inside you can see many ancient sculptures and furnishings.

It is very impressive like any other catedral or church or basilica in Italy. Pure architecture and style. Just take your time.

It’s got some interesting history (the facade is from a different church, and they ran out of money hence no dome…) and interesting decorations inside. The Plaza outside is very nice to sit in, shady cool stone benches on a hot day :)
