Nice Cathedral in the middle of Vicenza, overshadowed by all of the other architectural beauty, and I am sure due to it being reconstructed after the WWII bombings. Beautiful marble floors, a wonderful altar and some frescoes adorn this rather sedate cathedral. Very quiet during the week when we visited. Not many people, and very, very quiet.

The origins of this church are lost in the mists of time. It seems that even before the Romans there was a place of worship here that was subsequently modified. The earthquake around the year 1000 forced a new project to be developed to arrive at the dome designed by the great Palladio. Unfortunately, the American bombings left few traces of the fantastic frescoes that we can only imagine.

Despite the fact that UNESCO included the cathedral in the World Heritage List of Mankind, by and large the Anglo-American aviation left only the Gothic facade of this heritage... After the Allied forces failed to break through the Gothic Line in northern Italy in September 1944, Vicenza, along with other cities in northern Italy, was subjected to massive, indiscriminate bombing. One of the most affected in Italy in the autumn of 1944 was the Duomo of Vicenza. Virtually the entire cathedral was destroyed - the nave, the dome designed by Palladio, and all the frescoes of the cathedral were lost. Only the Gothic facade remains, just like the Portuguese cathedral in Macau, now in China. Everything else that we see is the result of a very long reconstruction that lasted from 1945 to 2002! More than half a century! It's spacious and bright inside the cathedral, but there's not much to see. Alas...

Spacious, historic, but without personality - that was my impression. Nothing special, frankly. You can safely skip it, there are many other more beautiful monuments in the city.

There were no signs to say when this cathedral opens for visitors. It is an ok looking building from outside.

I am a disabled person in a wheelchair. Today I wanted to enter the Cathedral but I was unable to as there is no access ramp for wheelchairs in the main entrance, nor any indication for any other accesses.

The presence of a small church on this site is attested already in the proto-Christian era (3rd century). After several destructions, reconstructions and expansions that lasted throughout the Middle Ages, around the mid-fifteenth century the building was enriched with an elegant Gothic-style façade. At the beginning of the following century, the architect Lorenzo da Bologna designed a new apse and side elevations in Renaissance style. After him it was the turn of Andrea Palladio, who designed a rich lateral entrance portal and the dome that dominates the cross. As a result of these interventions, the church took on an appearance similar to its current one. During World War II the cathedral was seriously damaged by air raids. The meticulous restorations lasted many years: the external parts were reconstructed faithfully to the original design, but many artistic testimonies contained inside were irremediably lost. Since 1994, the Cathedral of Vicenza, as evidence of its great historical and artistic value, has been included in the list of World Heritage Sites drawn up by UNESCO. The building is dedicated to Santa Maria Annunciata.
The sumptuous façade, covered in white marble enriched with small light pink inserts, is divided horizontally into four registers. The lowest highlights five pointed arches; in the central one, richly decorated with floral motifs and rather splayed towards the inside, the entrance door opens. Noteworthy are the two long and thin, finely perforated mullioned windows which lighten the second and fourth arches. The second level houses a large circular window flanked by pilasters. The third level is decorated only with two lateral pinnacles. On the upper register there are five small statues, the main one depicting the Virgin and Child. The first three levels are separated by two valuable stringcourses with tiny arches, typical of Italian Gothic architecture.
The bell tower, not very flashy, stands near the apse but is decidedly detached from the current church. The artefact highlights at least two construction phases: the oldest concerns the base, built in the 10th century to support a massive defensive tower. Three hundred years later, following the partial collapse of this, the current bell tower was erected on the remaining stump, more slender and elegant, approximately 25 meters high. The bell tower is ventilated by four harmonious Gothic mullioned windows. In more recent times, private buildings that can still be seen today were added to the bell tower. The Palladian dome is notable for the beautiful light green color of the surface, due to the oxidation of the copper plates that cover it, and for the original shape of the lantern that ends it at the top.
The interior has a single nave, with cross vaults. The presbytery is very raised compared to the nave; the difference in height is bridged by a monumental staircase with two flights, delimited by elegant balustrades with small pillars. At the end of the apse stands the main altar, richly decorated with columns with Corinthian capitals; on its sides there is a majestic semicircular façade, crowned by a balustrade adorned with angels. In the panels of the prospectus there is a seventeenth-century pictorial cycle attributed to various artists of the Venetian school, among which the Paduan Antonio Zanchi known as "il Tenebroso" (due to the very dark tones of his works) stands out. The walls, the vault of the dome and some side chapels appear rather bare, due to the already mentioned war devastation.
In the basement of the church, the remains of a private house from the Roman era used for Christian worship are visible, as well as some vestiges of the ancient churches that arose here during the Middle Ages, before the current one was built. Other finds pertaining to these buildings are exhibited in the nearby Diocesan Museum. Traces of a Roman road dating back to the 4th century AD have recently been found underground next to the church.
