17 settembre ore 15.50. Il Santuario chiuso senza nessun motivo ed oltre 70 persone fuori ad aspettare. Nessuno che informa i fedeli.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Tears is a minor basilica built in memory of the miracle of the tearing of a plaster painting depicting the Virgin Mary, which took place in August 1953 in the city of Syracuse at the home of the young couple Iannuso. The statuette-square was a half-bust of plaster, representing the Immaculate Heart of Mary and was a wedding gift, given to the young couple. The Church soon recognized the prodigy of the event and in 1954 the Archbishop of Palermo, Cardinal Ernesto Ruffini, blessed and laid the first stone of the sanctuary in the land destined for its construction. For a series of diatribes concerning the grandeur of the building, not entirely pleasing to the citizens, this began in 1966 and ended in 1994, the year in which His Holiness John Paul II consecrated it dedicating it to Our Lady of Tears; and the same pontiff, in 2002, elevated it to the dignity of a minor basilica.
Today the Shrine is the destination of millions of pilgrims from all over the world.
The structure is magnificent, both the interior and exterior design. Place of prayer and faith. Being able to remain in contemplation of the painting, pray and be silent with your thoughts, your emotions, is something priceless. However, it is a great shame to see how the exterior, including the gardens, are so poorly maintained and left to fend for themselves.

This may appeal to you, but, not to me. The spire stands out and is easy to locate, but, it’s just too modern and contrived. I walked around for about 10 minutes and moved on. The old ruins speak to me, this didn’t.

Beautiful holiday.
Fantastic Ortigia and Syracuse.
The sanctuary of tears is truly mammoth, it rises across the entire city.
Then we also visited Catania, Acitrezza and Taormina.

Unique, huge and yet atmospheric. Architecture without frills. There were few people in the church in the evening and despite its size it was a very private place of faith. Strange and impressive.

Very beautiful sanctuary, I felt regenerated.
I went on a bus from my parish, and I must say that I spent an unforgettable day, it was worth it.
Of course, I went with the intention of praying. At the very well-kept entrance, many jasmine or jasmine-like flowers were like a fragrant welcome.
I spent a day in prayer, from time to time I looked at the magnificence and immense structure around me.
Looking upwards, the center of the modern structure reminded me of a ray of light, of a tunnel, which leads up to Heaven. It was magnificent, especially in the afternoon, around 3pm, the setting sun filtered and entered through the colored glass windows, creating splendid reflections.
It's true it was modern, but inside (perhaps because I went during a large gathering, so we were more than 3000 groups of people), there was warmth, prayer, we were there to pray for peace, because of all these wars that they are happening... we prayed from the time we arrived, until we left.
Everything was prayer.
But the most important thing is not whether a building is beautiful and ancient or whether it is modern and cold or ugly.
What makes a Sacred Place beautiful is the interior and the love that is inside the heart.
If you pray and love God, everything around you becomes beautiful. Even a concrete block.
I have visited many ancient and certainly very beautiful churches, but I have not found the same devotion and fervor that I experienced that day.
So it's not just aesthetic beauty.
In this Sanctuary I felt the desire to pray.
A day immersed in prayer... it was beautiful, even if there were some normal small inconveniences (for example a long queue that day to go to confession). But while I was waiting, thanks to the excellent acoustics, I was able to follow the moments of prayer anyway.
I looked at the immense structure and imagined how many people worked on it to create even these tall, imposing "concrete blocks"... who knows how much effort and sweat it cost so many people... I really liked its structure you can see it throughout the city and its surroundings, and always remember there, that Our Lady of Tears cried and still cries over Her children... I also found tears of consolation, I liked it a lot.
The stained glass windows are beautiful, as I was saying, and beautiful that in every corner around this "star" as high as a mountain, there were banners and statues with various saints, the corner where the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is prayed etc.. in short, there These are details to observe.
The priests inside the Sanctuary cared a lot about the choir, the prayers, it was very beautiful.
The atmosphere inside was pleasant, it invited me to prayer.
Certainly being a Sanctuary, many people went there and it wasn't perfectly silent, however I was very focused on praying and praising God, that suddenly everything was just silence around and inside me....
I thank God for this journey, which at the beginning I didn't want to do, because I thought I wouldn't like it, instead, the Lord transformed it into something wonderful... this "concrete block" was completely full of God and the Celestial Mother ...

Hi, I went to the sanctuary with my family, heard the mass, received the blessing, they gave us the little bag with the cotton passed over the face of the Madonna where the tears fell, a great emotion, to pass on, certainly a blessing in these times is always good

I am contemplating taking the Viator trip to Syracuse/Noto and hoping to visit this church on free time given. Will it be open to see the Madonna's statue and the tears inside the church?
Skrevet 1. juli 2018
The church is open during the day and yes, the Madonna statue is on the main altar for all worshippers and visitors to see. Just be respectable, since it is a functioning church.
