Officially the worst “museum” I’ve ever been to. Zero introduction to who the Medici family is or its history, just random displays of people and items with no explanation of context or importance. The audio tour is AI generated and just states strange facts. Simply unbelievably bad.

Born in 2019 with the aim of preserving and disseminating the memory of the members of the most important family in Florence, who were the architects of the destinies of the city and of the whole of Tuscany for approximately three centuries: the Medici. If Florence is what it is today, if it is known throughout the world, if it was among the greatest protagonists of the late Middle Ages and above all the cradle of the Renaissance, it is due to the Medici, just as we should be eternally grateful to Anna Maria Luisa , the last descendant of the grand ducal branch, who with her pact with the Lorraine family ensured that the immense Medici collection of works of art remained in Tuscany (and therefore, I add, in Italy). Given that the city itself continually tells us about the Medici, this museum does not offer much to the visitor: in addition to reconstructions, such as the model of the battle of Anghiari or the virtual reproduction of the evolution of the ducal crown, a few paintings, a bust of Ferdinand II by Foggini, the Italian original (the other original in French is in the state archives of Vienna) of the Family Pact wanted by Anna Maria Luisa, perhaps the only remaining copy in the world of the eighteenth-century book with the portraits of all members of the Medici family. In my opinion this museum makes sense (and a partial justification of the entrance ticket) only if you take part in a guided tour, as happened to us who, on the occasion of the Florentine New Year, not only did we not pay anything, but we the excellent director of the museum acted as Cicero, entertaining us for more than an hour telling us the facts and misdeeds of this incredible family.
For about a year the museum has been housed in the Rotonda Brunelleschi, owned by the National Association of War Mutilated and Invalids (which also owns a good part of the adjacent former monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli, of which the rotunda was once part, and who, again for the Florentine New Year, gave us a free visit to the aforementioned rooms of the former monastery, otherwise difficult to see). The rotunda was designed in the first half of the 15th century by Brunelleschi, and can be considered the forerunner of centrally planned churches: it had 16 external and eight internal sides, represented by as many chapels; unfortunately the work remained unfinished, remaining a ruin until the 17th century, when at least the perimeter wall was covered, with the central part still uncovered. The current definitive physiognomy is due to the raising (very evident) and complete coverage carried out in the 1930s, after the structure was purchased by the aforementioned National Association of the Mutilated and War Invalids. The historical-architectural importance of the building does not correspond, at least inside, to any artistic value, being devoid of any ornamentation: one can only notice the truncated fluted pilasters in pietra serena between the eight chapels, today simple rooms which house the objects of the museum exhibition. Speaking of objects on display, I would also like to point out that from 23 March to 21 April there is the impromptu exhibition "The Crucifix Collection", i.e. Italian crucifixes dating from the 17th to the 18th century and coming from various churches, sometimes even in very poor condition, which Jean O 'Reilly Barlow has restored and supplemented with samples of various mineral species.

Short but interesting museum. The explanations are however necessary (and I recommend reading them on the phone rather than listening to a rather robotic reading). Price a little high but affordable in case of reduction.

An interesting museum of the history of a family as important as the Medicis in an exceptional location. Nothing more than to admire the new use that is being given to this gem of a building is worth entering. The rooms are distributed in different themes in a very interesting and specific way, which serves to learn a little about each of the areas that the power of this family covered. Access to information is simple and convenient through QR codes and the staff is attentive and friendly and is at your disposal for any questions. If you are interested in learning a little more about the history of the Medici, I recommend it

This exciting new museum has just blossomed in the heart of Florence.
La Rotonda del Brunelleschi is exceptional and the staff is incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, it was delightful to chat with the owner about the Medici’s fashion. Unlike most tourist-grabbing places in Florence, this museum provides with genuine, insightful and fun insights on one of the most famous dynasties of the world.

Obviously not to be confused with an art gallery; it is a history museum, where the works on display, contextualized and accompanied by digital narratives and philological reconstructions, are a springboard for immersing oneself in a given climate or for reliving a certain fact.

A historical museum that offers the possibility of learning more about the characters of the most important family of Florence and Tuscany. Foggini, Suttermans, 17th century book works; finally something new and interesting.

Congratulations also to the very young director, to the Tuscany Region and the Municipality of Florence for having reopened the Rotonda Brunelleschi to the public.

I don't understand the need for a "museum" where you can see four copies, while within a three km radius there are the most important collections and works of art on the Medici family...
