In the hilly area of Castello, therefore in a panoramic position, there are several historic villas that belonged to the Medici, which at the time were suburban villas, while today they are practically located on the northwest outskirts of the city of Florence; among them is the splendid Villa La Petraia, which after the Medici passed obviously to the Lorraine and then to the Savoy, and then to the Italian State after the end of the monarchy. The villa dates back to the 14th century (but at the time there was only one tower) but it was with the Medici, and in particular Ferdinand I, that the villa was enlarged (and the gardens built) and embellished to make it a private family residence; the improvements continued even in the 17th century, then in the following century with the Lorraine and also with the advent of the Savoy (it was the residence of Vittorio Emanuele II and Rosa Vercellana), who in addition to redecorating the villa installed the iron and glass roof of the central courtyard, which thus became a real party hall (and fortunately so the splendid frescoes have been preserved). This courtyard is one of the gems of the villa, which alone is worth a visit: with a double loggia on two sides, it has all four walls beautifully frescoed; by Cosimo Daddi in 1590 for the two walls without loggias and by Volterrano, from 1637 to 1646, for the two walls with loggias, which show the Medici Fasti. Before entering the courtyard you pass some rooms, not particularly scenic but containing the lunettes of the sixteenth-century possessions of the Medici, painted by the Flemish Giusto Utens in 1599 (there are 14 of the 17 total), the four sixteenth-century bronze putti by Pierino da Vinci that once adorned the fountain in the garden of the nearby Villa di Castello and the bronze sculpture group of Hercules and Antaeus, made by Ammannati in 1560 always for the fountain of Villa di Castello (on the latter there are copies today). The visit then continues always on the ground floor with some very sumptuous rooms, including the large Red Room, as well as the new chapel, whose vault was frescoed by Pier Dandini in 1609. On the main floor you cross the corridor of Canton where, in addition to some Chinese watercolors, the very long (9 meters) silk scroll painted in 1780 with the port of Canton is preserved. This is followed by a series of very beautiful rooms, especially for the valuable furnishings, including the Countess's bedroom, the King's study, the dining room, the game room; it is therefore worth admiring the splendid bronze Venus-Florence by Giambologna (1570) which once stood above the fountain in the center of the northeastern sector of the garden (where today it is a copy); in relation to the garden beautiful views can be had from some rooms on the main floor, but the panorama reaches the center of Florence, even if it is the district of Novoli that emerges priority. Also on the main floor there is the ancient chapel, frescoed in the last years of the sixteenth century by Bernardo Poccetti and Cosimo Daddi. Of course, in addition to the villa you will visit the gardens (for the latter I refer to my specific review on the subject). Free admission, but for timetables I recommend always consulting the official website (free the visit of the gardens, while only guided at fixed times that of the villa).

The villa is unquestionably beautiful, with free guided tours.
Very, but very disappointing the park that for at least a month and a half has been closed for maintenance.
Which is repeated very often, too bad for the visitors and the population that lives around it....

La Petraia is a splendid Medici villa on the hills overlooking Florence, the visits are at certain times but are free, a really nice initiative.
Of the premises definitely striking the beautifully decorated inner courtyard, cute the first floor where the private apartments were located.
I would definitely recommend a visit to the Petraia, perhaps combined with other Medici villas heritage sites that are nearby.

The villa is spectacular to visit with the accompaniment of an expert who takes you to know many aspects of life in the various eras and for the various inhabitants, from the Medici to the Savoys, with continuous connections both to the history of pre-unification Italy and to the individuals furniture or individual furnishings present and gracefully restored.

The villa is very interesting from both an aesthetic and historical point of view. If I don't give my best it's because it seems to me that there is still work to be done from an organizational point of view. The villa has little or no connection with the city. The visits are entrusted to volunteers and not to permanent staff; I must say that we were met by a well-prepared person and it was pleasant to listen to her but as regards times and entrances there seems to be a lot of confusion. I read on the site that it was not necessary to book but then I came across an organized group of around fifty people so I risked not being able to enter; I had always read on the site that there was a visit at 12.30 and instead on site they told me no. In short, greater rigor is needed. As for the villa, here as in other Medici villas the structural layout given by the Medici has been quite preserved but the subsequent owners have gone down hard with the changes in the interior so much so that one leaves with the impression of having visited a villa Savoy. The park is beautiful in structure but obviously this is not the time to find it in its splendor, especially after such a bizarre season.

Spectacular villa with panoramic views of Florence. Guided tour by a volunteer expert in the history of Florence and the Medici, lots of culture and great knowledge of art. An experience recommended to anyone with an interest in the art and beauty of the Renaissance and the Medici era.

If you are going to the Villa to enjoy the gardens, please be advised that they are in an abandoned state. Let’s stop sugar coating the reality. All of these Medici Villas will disappoint you if your focus is the gardens. Simply truth. The Medici history is incredible and the concept of gardens and art coming together in a Villa during the renaissance period is very captivating. But you will have to imagine what the garden may have looked like in the past.
