A journey over 1000 years long that tells with its finds the history of Pisa from prehistoric times to Roman times and takes place in the beautiful Medici Arsenal.
Exploring the theme rooms we can appreciate the hundreds of artifacts as well as the remains of the imposing Roman ships.
It would be a shame not to visit it.

Medium-sized museum based on the discovery of several ships, some of them well preserved, in 1998. Actually there are some of the ships found and well preserved, but the museum is not only that. In fact, we take the opportunity to tell the story of Pisa and life on ships of the time, with the exhibition of some very interesting artifacts and information. I would say that the strength of the museum is precisely its being informative more than for the exhibits (remains of ships apart), although of great historical value.

In 1998, during the works carried out near San Rossore station, aimed at the construction of the railway management center, protected by a thick layer of clay and sand, a series of shipwrecks emerged in excellent condition, with their cargoes of commercial products and testimonies related to life on board.
Twenty years later, the Museum of Roman Ships was born from the exceptional discovery.   The location where the finds are exhibited is significant: these are the sixteenth-century Medici Arsenals commissioned by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I sites on the Lungorni.
The museum, divided into eight sections, starts from the history of Pisa between archaeology and legend, follows the relationship of the city with water, floods, the territory divided between canals and centuriations, the port system, ceramic workshops, fishing, agriculture, timber, reconstruction of shipyards, the exhibition of ships, the section dedicated to navigation techniques, on board life with the many objects that describe the life of sailors: clothing, luggage, lighting, how to cook and eat, cults and superstitions, games to cheat time during long crossings. Of note are the skeleton of a sailor still hugging his dog who died in the shipwreck , a cargo boat carrying foodstuffs from Campania , the wooden anchor and the rudder of ship A , the luggage of the sailor of ship A , the leather jacket from the Alkedo . Four of the boats were found perfectly intact , a rowing ship , a flat-bottomed river ferry from the fifth century AD. C, in oak wood , a small boat intended for the transport of goods, a large river boat with visible masts and bridges. The most interesting is the ship Alkedo, that is Seagull, the flagship of the fleet, the best preserved wreck found almost intact with the bow still equipped with a pointed cutter to ply the waters more quickly. It is a Roman pleasure ship where on the rowing benches sat twelve oarsmen, probably slaves, with slender shapes that resemble a fast warship that could reach up to thirty kilometers per hour. The coin found in the scassa , as per the maritime tradition of antiquity, with the faces of Livia and Augustus documents that the launch took place in 14 AD. C, and that the ship sank during a devastating flood in the Augustan age or shortly thereafter. A recently inaugurated museum that deserves a visit for the precious testimony offered.

A recently opened museum (2019) therefore ‘modern’ in its conception; it does not contain ‘ships’ of particular importance (galleons or similar) but certainly has its own uniqueness.

It is certainly worth a ride if interested in the topic. Really beautiful temporary exhibition in progress.

But someone should explain why, in a city with a very high tourist rate, three afternoons a week the museum is closed.

Correct entry price and easy parking in the surroundings.

I visited on a rainy Wednesday, and I practically had the entire place to myself! The museum uses a variety of engaging media to bring the exhibits to life. But the real stars of the show are the precious antique shipwrecks themselves. Witnessing these meticulously preserved vessels firsthand provides a powerful connection to the past. The museum also showcases impressive reconstructions, allowing visitors to visualize these ancient ships in their full glory. Whether you're a history buff or simply curious about the wonders of the sea, how people used to live and travel, this museum is a must-visit.

Very interesting and interactive museum, suitable for families with children, tells the history of Pisa through the millennia, not just the Roman part which naturally has its highlight in the ships. At least two hours should be dedicated.

The museum itself is already rich in naval history (they were the ancient arsenals of the Medici fleet), and there could not be a better space to host the many Roman ships found in 1998. The layout is both evocative and very clear, and still tells many stories, from environmental changes to the luggage of those who traveled on those boats.
Take at least a couple of hours to fully enjoy it.

The museum is located in the medical arsenals, easy to reach by car with parking spaces in front along the Lungarno. The complex is very suggestive, the first rooms are housed in the stables. The exhibition begins with the presentation of the materials from the Bronze Age and then with the Villanovan materials and the Etruscan city of Pisa, an overview resulting from rather recent discoveries. The rooms that house the naval wrecks and the materials found in and around them are very beautiful. Objects of daily use, clothing, various types of accessories, commonly used crockery, leather bags, wicker baskets, nautical instruments. An archaeological museum that can be visited as an ethnographic collection from a period of over five centuries.

My girlfriend & I visited this boat museum as the TripAdvisor reviews were all good & I wasn't disappointed.

You need a good 3 hours to get round if you are intending to read & look properly at everything as there are many rooms/areas to look at.

It's all laid out very nicely in a particular order & I found it very interesting to see the very old artifacts, plus the actual boat(s) used in the stories told, adding to the intrigue.

If you have even a passing interest in boats, you'll enjoy this museum, plus it's not that expensive to get in & there are vending machines if you need a drink etc...
