Quiet place, well maintained, I especially point out the cell of the saint, going down the stairs. The rest seems less interesting, despite there are nice views (cockpit).

Saint Catherine, one of the most charismatic figures of the Catholic Church, and in her own way the protagonist of the history of Siena and Italy, is remembered by her hometown with a sanctuary located exactly where her family home stood.
It is a complex of various environments: the entrance porch is a reconstruction in style made in the mid-twentieth century, while it seems that the beautiful well in the right corner of the entrance is old. Even inside one should not expect a faithful reconstruction of the fourteenth-century residence of the Benincasa, and ranges between quite different environments, but united by the suggestion of the history of the saint: the Oratory of the Kitchen, in which you can see Bernardino Fungai's painting with Catherine receiving the stigmata, the precious majolica floor and traces of what had been the hearth of the saint's family; the Oratory of the Room, below and corresponding to the room in which Catherine slept, frescoed in a somewhat conventional way with episodes of her childhood and youth; the Baroque Church of the Crucifix, perhaps the most significant room of the sanctuary, where the Crucifix is housed that sent the stigmata to the saint.
The whole complex can be visited freely and free of charge, always a very appreciable aspect in my opinion (for example, in Siena itself, organizing a visit to the Duomo and the Opera is a far from easy task); it must be said that not all the rooms of the sanctuary are open at the same time, for example in my case I had to wait a while to enter the church, but overall the visit is absolutely worth it.
Since it is a religious place, certain rules must of course be respected: appropriate clothing, respectful behavior, no animals; I have personally seen a nun rebuke - in my opinion with good reason - too noisy a group.

Not to be missed for devotees of Santa Caterina, but also recommended for those who are not believers. In the place where she was born there are a beautiful church and above all two oratories where beautiful works of art are collected that tell the life of this great saint, also protagonist of the political life of her time. Nice atmosphere, away from the chaos of mordiefuggi tourism that does not even spare Siena.

Saint Catherine is Siena (with Bernardino) and among the first Saints, with Saint Teresa, women.
We dedicate a part of time, dedicated to the beauty of Siena, to know Santa Caterina.
He was born in Siena on March 25, 1347, to the dyer Jacopo Benincasa and Lapa di Puccio de’ Piacenti. She is the 24th, twin, of 25 brothers and sisters. At the age of seven he had the first vision of Christ, in papal clothes, accompanied by the apostles Peter and Paul and the evangelist John. The experience marked her life, so much so that at seven she took a vow of perpetual virginity; but the family hindered her vocation, until one day her father surprised her in prayer with a dove hovering over her head.
He then received in 1363 the habit of the Dominican Third Order. Her life continued in prayer and penance; at twenty she learned to read, received the ring of mystical marriage to Jesus, dictated the first letters, began her charitable activity: poor, sick, imprisoned, often repaid by ingratitude and slander. His figure began to attract the first disciples, mockingly called “caterinates”.
When the fame of his holiness spread, he was the protagonist of an intense activity of Spiritual Recommendation towards every category of people: noblemen and politicians, artists and people of the people, consecrated persons, ecclesiastics, including Pope Gregory XI who at that time resided in Avignon and whom Catherine urged energetically and effectively to return to Rome.
Catherine suffered so much, like many Saints. Some even thought she should be distrusted to the point that, in 1374, six years before her death, the Dominican general chapter summoned her to Florence for questioning. They placed next to her a learned and humble friar, Raymond of Capua, future Master General of the Order. Having become his confessor and also his "spiritual son", he wrote a first complete biography of the Saint.
On the death of Pope Gregory XI, his successor Urban VI was opposed in the college of cardinals who elected Clement VII as antipope, beginning the Western Schism. Catherine exerted all her energy to have the authority of Urban VI recognized and was consumed in grief for the divided Church, dying on 29 April 1380 at the age of 33. She was proclaimed a saint in 1461 by the Sienese Pope Pius II, patron saint of Italy by Pius XII, doctor of the Universal Church by Paul Vi and patron saint of Europe by John Paul II.

The Sanctuary is the house where Saint Catherine lived. The atmosphere is so peaceful that you can really feel spiritually connected, if you are a person of faith. A place of prayer and worship.

I had always wanted to visit the Sanctuary of St. Catherine and every time I decided to go there an unexpected event had always happened that prevented me from doing so; I finally succeeded.
The Oratory of the Kitchen (or Superior) is beautiful. The Church of the Crucifix is wonderful (the Oratory of the Chamber is unfortunately not accessible).
Heartfelt thanks to the nun who allowed me to access the various environments and acted as my guide.

On the road between San Domenico and Piazza del Campo we came across, almost by chance, the birthplace of Saint Catherine of Siena, converted into a sanctuary given that the Saint lived her religious experience in her own home. It is a very valuable building in which to admire, among others, the church of the Crucifix and the kitchen oratory. Free admission.

The place is very simple, but enchanting in its details and peaceful atmosphere. It has an iron gate that is a work of art, with an incredible design.
