Short wait for the Bahn, nice view of the falls. There is a hike up toward the top of the falls, it's steep. We stopped at a lookout 10 mins up but didn't go further because we had other activities to do. Didn't seem like a simple hike. A pleasant time was had

There are seven waterfalls, one 120m, one 5m and the rest smaller. Famous for the Sherlock Holmes story. You can get on/off with the zip train in about 10min or do it on foot along the steep path. Price 16CHF if combined with Aareschlucht.

The Reichenbach Fall is not worth a visit as it has become more of a Rinsall and should they be the 3rd. Hydroelectric power plants really put into operation there will not flow any more water, they already only allow a small amount of water to flow at certain times. The track up is great but it won't be interesting if the waterfall doesn't run anymore.

The excursion starts with a train ride up to the waterfall. Imposing especially now, with a lot of rain a lot of water comes down. It is worth climbing up and looking at the waterfall from above. Look down, be slightly dizzy😉

The picturesque funicular is great. But I couldn't leave the station upstairs. If you are afraid of heights, don't go there.

The Reichenbachbahn takes you directly to the best starting point of the waterfall. An incredibly beautiful sight - absolutely worth seeing. After that, a hiking trail continues, which you can extend as much as you like or simply take the circular route back to Meiringen. Great paths through forest and fields, well signposted, wonderful views.

Easily reachable by funicular, the Reichenbach Waterfalls are very beautiful, they are famous for being the place where the death of Sherlock Holmes was set, in the fight against Professor Moriarty.
The route is not easy especially for those who suffer from vertigo but if I have done it, it can be done because it is worth it.

I was very happy with the trip, the train staff were very friendly. The journey was pleasant and took us through a beautiful forest landscape. A beautiful hiking trail leads up to the top of the waterfall. The various small waterfalls are impressive. At night they are even illuminated and visible from far away.

Stunningly beautiful waterfall. There are few tourists and that's wonderful! We went up on a retro train (about 6 francs per person) and walked down. We were left impressed, maybe the fictional story about Sherlock Holmes works this way, but this miracle of nature is really beautiful!

Glad we visited the Falls but it wasn't at all what I expected from reading reviews. The funicular was fun but the falls weren’t that impressive, very little water flow that day. Exploring the area on foot is hard work, not a gentle touristy wander. Walking to the top of the falls is steep and further than you think, although worthwhile as the water is more impressive up there. However, walking down (on the other side of the valley to the funicular) was steep and slippery, tricky walking even in walking boots. We could understand why the funicular ticket seller was surprised when we said we wanted a one-way ticket! Worth visiting but have the right expectations.

Is it possible to walk up and not take the fun icular? If so, does one pay any admission fee?… thanks!

Maybe somebody knows. Can we go up Schwendistrasse by own car . Then park somewhere near hotel and walk to the waterfall? thanks
Skrevet 24. februar 2019
Schwendistrasse is a very narrow road and you'll need to turn onto Scheideggstrasse about half way up. I don't think there are any restrictions on personal cars going up there, especially since there are a few inns up there, but legal parking could be challenging. Once parked, there are trails that lead down to the falls. The funicular from the bottom looked like fun, but we preferred the hike up, and we very happy with our decision. The falls are amazing.

Greetings,
I have reviewed the website and read peoples' posts but I'm still having a little trouble understanding the process of going from the gorge to the falls on foot. How far and how strenuous a walk is it? regarding the gorge - how long a walk is it (distance and time)? Also having trouble understanding the different levels of the falls (where the funicular takes you and where you walk). Thank you for any additional information.

The lower station is about 20 minutes walk from Meiringen at Willigen. The way is signed in Meiringen. The furnicular goes to the upper station. From there you can walk further up the path, it's not too difficult and you get good views of the valley below.

I can't remember, so it was not very expensive! We had a 15 day Swiss rail pass and I'm not sure if this covered the ride on the furnicular. From the furnicular station we walked along the path and then eventually down to Meiringen village.

Hello, my wife and I are visiting Zurich next month and we are very interested in seeing the falls and some of the other sights nearby. Is there any way to get there from Zurich? We were considering renting a car, but I am not sure how different Swiss road ways are from the US. Does anyone have experience with this?
Skrevet 13. september 2017
My husband and I have traveled quite a bit in Europe and never rent a car. We much prefer the convenience of the train system and we also enjoy walking. Last summer, we took a train from Zurich to Meiringen, which was a couple of hours away. A train leaves Zurich every 60 minutes to Luzern and you change trains there for Meiringen.
We stayed in the Hotel Victoria, which is a lovely boutique place and it is literally right next door to the train station and from there we walked to the Falls. In addition to the Falls, we also enjoyed Aare Gorge, on the river Aare. Each of these sites, were about a thirty minute or less than two mile walk in different directions from the train station. I do not recall any public transportation in Meiringen but we found this a delightful little town to walk about safely with break-taking scenery.

Does anyone knows if it's possible to take the funicular with a (well behaved, on leash, big size) dog?
Skrevet 5. mai 2017
I'm answering myself so anyone interested can know.
Dogs are allowed on the funicular no matter their size and they don't have to pay any ticket.
They have to be very calm though, for safety reasons: they could get spooked by the noise or movement of the train or by the waterfall and, considering the funicular is open, try to jump out... so take your dogs, but only if they are very well behaved and ok with strong noises.

Como lá chegar partindo de Meiringen. Estou com carro, ajuda ou prejudica ter carro nesse lugar. Depois do funicular qual o grau de dificuldade para prosseguir e ver as cascatas?

We're going to be in Interlaken in October, after the funicular stops running on October 9, 2016. Is it still worth the visit if the funicular isn't running? Can we hike to the base of the falls? It the hike something an older couple could achieve? Is a visit to the Reichenbach Falls an all day visit or something that could be done in the morning or is it an all day activity?
Skrevet 16. august 2016
Yes, you can walk up, and I guess it would take about an hour and a half to reach the falls from the railway station or an hour from the car-park. If you arrive by 9 you can be back in Interlaken for lunch.

How far is it from holmes museum
How much time we need to visit both , just use funicular and dont climb up, and museum.
Skrevet 27. august 2015
The museum has a commentary for each exhibit and though small is very interesting with a replica of the sitting room at Baker Street. Maybe allow 45 - 50 minutes for this ?
I would allow a bit more time to get from town to funicular, say 20 minutes. Check the times as it takes a lunch break(get the leaflet from the tourist info ladies at the station) and there is not much to do at the bottom !
Also if you need refreshment then you should get it in the town.
There is a nice restaurant if you do the walk at the top of the funicular which takes you above the falls but it has a lot of steps and quite steep. If you are going to stand and look at the falls from where you get off the funicular you may need an umberella or rain coat as the spray can be a bit damp.
The nearest place to eat or drink once you are off the funicular at the bottom is Hotel Tourist (just up the main road if you turn right at the cross roads).
Hope this helps !
