En legendarisk festival ved Genfersjøen som er berømt for sine artister og lydkvaliteten. Festivalen tok navnet sitt fra et kasino og i starten varte den bare i 3 dager. Senere på 1970-tallet ble den åpnet for alle typer talenter, ikke bare innen jazz - men også elektro, rap, rock, soul etc. I dag inkluderer festivalprogrammet en mengde gratisarrangementer, akustiske konserter, sangkonkurranser og workshops. Konkurransen har alltid vært høy innen to nominasjoner - Jazz Piano og Jazz sang. For natteravnene, er det nattkonserter og jamsessions i jazzklubben.

Disappointing experience july 2023

Inside the Montreux music & convention center(next to the free stage: towards the Vevey end of the strip along the lake of general merchandise/crafts & food/drink/alcohol stands) had a large gift shop for fest items including previous years t shirts(~45 chf!). This was the largest/best (only?) selection that we could find.
FEST: disappointing..No music started until 7pm. Was hoping for some street performers(for tips) during the day/early eve. There were NONE. I was looking forward to this..we based 5 nights in Lausanne for it, but I would never come back(from the US), as I have been to SO much better EU & US music festivals.
But we did buy the Mobilis 8 zone pass at the train station from Lausanne that brought us all the way to the castle one day(29.50 chf) with unlimited hop on & off along the way incl the buses. get off in montreux & get on a diff train to the castle! So we visited the castle & on the way back to montreux we walked UP to the street level & caught the BUS (way more frequent than the train! Pic attached). Get off at montreux marche (or the casino stop to visit the free queen studio inside the casino)
I’ve been to montreux before during their Christmas market when they have Santa’s sleigh ride over the lake…MUCH better to come then. Maybe this visit/festival reflects trying to revive after covid? As I see quite good reviews before covid🤷‍♀️

Overpriced, overcrowded

Avoid at all costs, (cost being the operative word), this festival has lost all contact with its roots. The stallholders are fleecing tourists and the acts themselves are no longer the big draw that they once were. The Bob Dylan concert was appalling, the price of food and drinks is atrocious but I suspect the stallholders are trying to recoup their outlay. As a local of 15 years, this festival has become an income generator for Montreux and it’s somewhat dubious Administration but it has lost sight of its original ethos.

Went to see Gilberto Gil who I have been hoping to see for decades. Not a bad gig. Great to see the legend in the flesh. But… the mixing was bad. Couldn’t hear percussion, brass at all… over loud drums. Disappointing after the show. We mingled with the crowd, hoping to hear jazz. But no jazz in sight. All the side venues playing trap, commercial house music. No jazz in sight anywhere.
Trying to work out why the festival is called a Jazz festival. Call it what it is Montreux - a bad house music festival.

Un jazz festival senza jazz

Un casino infernale, musica da discoteca per le strade, pochi musicisti e pure scarsi e prezzi folli. Veramente deludente.

Le centre des Congrès n'est plus aux normes depuis 2013 ! Les salles sont mal-climatisées. De plus, il y a trop de gens qui poussent tout le monde. Enfin, le prix des billets est excessif. Mieux vaut aller à Paleo.

interesting to read some negative reviews of this year's festival.
but then certain types of people like to find something to complain about in any given situation, to make their small lives feel important!
certainly not the experience we had in the year before covid.
we saw Tom Jones, ZZTop Kenny wayne shepherd to name but a few & just missed Elton John & Rag & Bone man in the Stravinsky auditorium & several other great players in the jazz cafe & the free venues.
yes it's not cheap, but also not particularly expensive either.
we had a disabled person with us & the staff couldn't have been any more helpful at every turn.
there's a load of free gigs all over town & the boat day trips were superb too.
for eg. we saw a British blues player called Joanne Shaw Taylor for free & her current tour tickets are £30 odd..!
plus what isn't mentioned is that all transport inside a 3 mile radius is totally free. that's buses & trains. so you can stay in Vevey for eg. where accommodation is a lot cheaper & pop in & out of Montreux foc. all day & night.
plus the weather was perfect & the scenery & general atmosphere make the Montreux jazz fest a bucket list event for any real music fan.
pay no heed to the negative types who would be better suited to be in a caravan watching soap operas !
again - a must for all music fans of all genres..
empty a credit card & just do it 👍

Expensive. Disorganized. Won't return.

The musicians I saw at the "Jazz Lab", the smaller of the two main venues, were talented and original but absolutely nothing to do with jazz.
They need to drop the word "jazz".
Aside from that, it was poorly organized with a one hour set followed by a 30-45 minute interlude while you either kept standing there or tried to find somewhere outside of the security cordon to park yourself and buy a bad drink at a high price.
Then you'd have to go back through security again.
The transport systems ignore the reality of thousands of people going to or from the venue. That really took me by surprise.
I can see live performances just add good for much less money at several venues in Camden, so I'll not be returning to Montreux.

Fantastic Artists…..See Them Elsewhere

Our third trip to the festival in beautiful Montreux and what a difference to our previous trips. Oversold hot crowded venues, appalling offerings at the bars for outrageous prices, a general feeling of being a rip off event! The Stravinsky AC only seemed to work properly on our last night, Friday….even one artist complained about it on stage…and not allowed to take water into the venue despite the heat.
Our friends retrieved a drunken drugged individual from the rocks on the lake with a serious head injury and struggled to find any security or medical help.
Queueing to get into paid or free events was chaotic.
The three paid events we attended were excellent ….particularly Asaf Avidan….brilliant.
So all in all, we won’t be returning any time soon.
Suspect Claude would be less than happy with the evolution of his legacy.

Mauvaise organisation pour les entrées. Le El Mundo si on a de la chance on peut rentrer a l'intérieur en 45 minutes mais attention de ne pas être trop pressé, chaleur étouffante car trop de monde amassés. Une vraie cata

We attended for a week and there were some great acts - but wow did we pay for the privilege. That would have been acceptable if the organisation was good but it was shocking - mass lines of people coming from different directions and no real systems to make sure everyone got to their seats safely. Acts were often very late on without any apology or update and in one instance a venue for a podcast got moved without any information given - even while everyone was waiting in the stated room. Festival staff seemed poorly briefed and there seems to be no integrated communication system so they can advise people correctly. The food areas in the festival were varied but again long lines and not enough seating for people eating. Average food and expensive. Montreux is a beautiful town but I certainly wont be returning for the jazz festival - there are better more organised festivals that offer much better value for money.
