Very nice museum in the beautiful building block the Ship by Michel de Klerk in the Spaarndammerbuurt in Amsterdam. The building is really beautiful from the outside, the only one of its kind. Saw an exhibition by Michel de Klerk in the museum, extremely interesting.

Great museum for visitors to Amsterdam who are interested in architecture. This is the right place for you if you want to see something different from the usual well-known museums. You should plan around two hours for the visit and definitely don't miss the guided tour included in the price: this is the only way to see the former post office! It is easy to get there by public transport (bus) from Central Station.

Fantastic museum explaining how housing changed in Amsterdam over the last hundred years as well as an amazing example of Amsterdam School of architecture. We've already recommended visiting this place to all our friends.

Special museum about the Amsterdam School, with architect, photos, film and furniture, in a very special building, Amsterdam School style. The restaurant is not recommended, far too expensive for the quality and quantities. Hopefully the excess money paid will benefit the museum.

As an admirer of the Amsterdam School, Museum Het Schip had been on my list to visit for years. It finally happened and it was beautiful! The museum is located in a striking public housing complex, designed by Michel de Klerk. You won't get tired of the facades with wavy brick patterns, natural and round shapes and beautiful details. The design shows dedication, insight and attention to details. What a treat it must be to be able to live here. It was not without reason that the complex was known as a true workers' palace. The museum is housed in the former school building. The permanent exhibition is dedicated to the Amsterdam School in construction and art and shows this movement in all its glory. Designs by Hildo Krop, Pieter Kramer and Michel de Klerk are on display. You can also see what the importance of the Housing Act was and how public housing subsequently developed. The exhibition about Michel de Klerk can be visited until September 1, 2024. Although the permanent exhibition already pays a lot of attention to him, this exhibition clearly shows what an enormously talented architect and artist De Klerk (unfortunately died much too early) was. What was his life like, what were his sources of inspiration and what influence did (and still has) his work on architecture? Due to the bad weather, we canceled the tour outside the complex, the post office and the workers' house this time, but we will definitely come here in return!

During the Industrial Revolution, more and more workers from the countryside flocked to Amsterdam. They lived in such poor hygienic conditions that the city had to do something. This led to the establishment of numerous housing cooperatives. One of them was "Eigen Haard". The architect Michel de Klerk built the "Het Ship" complex in 1919 in the style of the Amsterdam School as a housing project for low-income workers.

Tickets are available online and at the box office. Entry is free with my I amsterdam card. On this weekday, the first tour at 11:10 a.m. has only three participants. Our guide offers to conduct the tour in English, although the regular English tour usually takes place at 3 p.m. We see the post office, a replica of a slum apartment and an authentic apartment from the project. The differences couldn't be greater.

Afterwards, it's worth exploring the museum. The permanent exhibition "Constructed Ideals" not only shows the diverse influences of the Amsterdam School on architecture, typography, illustration and design, but also offers insights into the history of social housing in the city. There are also excellently curated special exhibitions. The well-stocked museum shop offers plenty of background material. An apple pie with coffee in the beautiful lunchroom rounds off the visit.

The Het Ship Museum is dedicated to the Amsterdam school of architecture. In 1901, the city authorities of Amsterdam adopted new standards for the construction of housing for workers. Workers are moving from slums to comfortable apartments in new neighborhoods with original layouts. Socialist ideas were popular and young architects took up the task of designing new houses, comfortable and stylish, with interest. One of these projects by architect Michel de Klerk is the Ship House in the southwestern part of Amsterdam. It took about 40 minutes to get from Vondelpark with transfers and passed through the territory of a gas holder plant turned into a park. We were at the museum for opening at 11 am. There are almost no people; the museum has an interesting exhibition dedicated to architecture and household items of the early 20th century. There was even a magazine called “Changes” in honor of new trends in architecture. After walking around the museum for almost an hour, we join the tour in English. They talk about new ideas for a house-ship - small windows familiar to workers and former rural residents, rounded corners, a tribute to nature in the Art Deco era, a corner semicircular tower reminiscent of a steamship funnel. And finally, the symbol of the house is a cone-shaped tower in the center of the complex. It has no functional purpose; it was built in the likeness of Indonesian temples, the state, and at that time a Dutch colony. In the building under the tower there is a “standard” apartment for workers. I expected that the tour would be more about architecture, but it was mainly about “socialist” life.
