Highly overpriced and overrated. The animals are all caged and constantly fed to pose for photographs. Sad and disgusting. The photos on the brochure etc are all from somewhere else or staged. The butterfly and humming birds are good but there are a lot better ones that you will see in La Fortuna/Monteverde.
The most important thing (that no one tells you at check in or brochure) is that this is NOT a place to visit if you have any mobility issues or a senior. There are a lot of steps (even for the first few animal visits) and you cant go to the waterfalls at all. My son who walked to the falls and mentioned it was nothing special. All views are close ups and you don’t have a view with all the falls seen together.
If you are in area just drive along beyond the entrance on the same road for another 20 minutes and the waterfalls that can be seen from the road. Much more pretty.
Overall, overpriced and sad to see these caged sloths/birds (specially when you see them thriving in nature in La Fortuna/Monteverde). If you are into an amusement park kind of crowded environment with restaurants and noise this place may be ok. Otherwise, skip and go straight to La Fortuna.

This is an easy day trip from San Jose and well worth the trip. The park is huge and very well done. The facilities are superbly laid out and well appointed. The animal sanctuary was great and the animals appear well cared for. The toucan exhibit was a lot of fun and you can get up close and personal with them. It, along with the hummingbirds, was our favorite part. The butterfly exhibit was packed with the blue morphos and is a photographer’s dream. The falls themselves are beautiful and the path is not too strenuous. They use a bus to shuttle you back to reception which is a fabulous perk. The information says allow two hours but we were there three hours and could have stayed longer. Don’t cut yourself short on time. But do go and see it!

A great way to spend the day. It is a beautiful drive from San Jose to the gardens. The whole trail in the gardens is quite a walk, but well worth it! Near the entrance are walk-through enclosures with birds, butterflies, snakes, and toads. They have a whole section with many different felines for a close up look. All the animals are rescues, so you feel good supporting them. Then, take the hike down the valley past several waterfalls, one of which you can stand right next to and touch!

RACISM. Comportamientos RACISTAS! Algo intolerable.😡
0/5 estrellas porque los guías de turista de la AGENCIA AVE DEL SOL🇨🇷 que dejan entrar se comportaron abusivos, no solo con mi familia sino en particular con los extranjeros coreanos. 🇰🇷
Estábamos esperando la fila después del recorrido a las cascadas hacia el hotel que ofrece el transporte, pero el guía de turista de que aparece en la FOTO trató de impedir que entraran al bus una familia de COREANOS, con mi familia no dejamos que nos amenazara y logramos subir pero la gente no entendía lo que pasaba y comenzamos a discutir con el.
Al final pocos de los que estábamos haciendo fila entramos al bus,🚍 pero nos siguió insultando diciendo que debimos habernos bajado del bus si tanto nos molestaba como había tratado a aquella familia 🇰🇷 y a nosotros y a una familia (un esposo, esposa y sus 2 hijos) 👨👩👧👦que iban en la fila con nosotros, no los dejó entrar al bus sino que hizo pasar a unos estadounidenses primero, que RIDÍCULO, la familia habían llegado primero y les tocaba subir al bus.
No creí que los costarricenses y menos que en este país fuesen así, espero que cuando continúe mi visita al país no sea la regla la forma tan RACISTAS en que tratan a los demás solo por su idioma, color de piel o apariencia.

Nice to see the waterfalls and some of the animals we had seen in the wild up close and to learn more about them. They were all very well cared for. Great Serpatarium with lots of information on the snakes.

While this is a refuge for the animals and not in the wild, it really is very nice to see. I enjoyed the butterfly, hummingbirds and Toucans. Aside from all of this, the short walk to the Waterfalls was equally beautiful. For those who want a good cross section of Costa Rica in a a few hours, paved walkways and to see some of the local wildlife, this is a great place to be. It will not disappoint. If you combine this with some hiking at Poas (if the weather permits), it makes for a great trip. There are quite a bit of steps, but it is all downhill... they have a shuttle to bring you back up, so it is pretty darn easy for the location. The drive to the Gardens is a lot of up/down and windy, so for those who don't like mountainous driving, this is not for you!!

Entrée très très chère 100 dollars pour 2.
Deception pour l énorme volière ou aucun oiseau ne vole en liberté car tous en cage à l intérieur de cette volière.
Félins dans de très petits espaces...
Belle découverte par contre avec les colibris.
Cascades fabuleuses et belle balade
Pêche payante de poissons appâtes par de la nourriture et qui sont relâchés avec la bouche arrachée par l hameçon pour amuser les petits touristes et qui meurent au fond après...
Ou est le soucis du respect et du bien être animal ?.
Restauration copieuse et abordable.
Deception pour l énorme volière ou aucun oiseau ne vole en liberté car tous en cage à l intérieur de cette volière.

We went in November so the waterfalls were amazing. Lovely gardens. The big cats in cages made us all really sad. Two of them were just pacing their cages. The butterfly 🦋 enclosure was interesting.

This is such a beautiful place that is well maintained and very friendly staff. We will definitely bring family and friends back here. A special thanks to the gentlemen that let us get close to the Toucan named Tequila, he took our picture with him. Sorry I did not get his name. The trek down is not easy but well worth it. I have no complaints on the property, they are doing things right. Can’t wait to come back.

This place was lovely. There was a lot to see and the restaurant buffet was really good. I wish our travel agent had told us about all the stairs. My knees were toast for the rest of our visit. Great place to see though if you can handle the stairs and climbing up and down steep terrain.
The hummingbirds, and butterfly garden were really spectacular. They also had some caged monkeys and some great exhibits of insects and frogs. Great for families.

There are benches and seating around the park.
I didn’t explicitly see wheelchairs/scooters. The waterfall wouldn’t be accessible for those on wheels, but I think most of the rest of the park is.

Good question. There are supposedly buses that leave from Santa Barbera, near Alaquela, fairly early & that come back in the late afternoon. However, it's very difficult to get real information about the schedule ???. The best thing seems to be to have a rental car OR to try to take the bus but be prepared to hitch hike in case no bus arrives! People are friendly & helpful for the most part, so the chances that things will work out are pretty high!

Is ut safe to park in their parking lot with suitcases inside? We are driving from Sjo to La Fortuna. This garden is the midpoint between the two cities. However, I don't want to stop if my car window would be smashed. Don't want my trip to get ruined on Day 1. Please advise. TIA.

Yes, although suitcases are always at risk if you leave them in a car, La Paz has a private lot and a parking attendant that was there the whole time we were. We did the same thing, stopping here from San Jose to La Fortuna. We always carry a piece of black fabric with us, and cover our luggage with it. When you look in the window, it makes it hard to see that their is anything in the car. We take this fabric with us on all trips. Just a cheap piece of black fabric from your local fabric store works great.
