Lovely quiet place to visit we were told to go over the railway bridge when visiting. You would never have guessed that a bomb had dropped here.

We really enjoyed our visit to Hill 60 - the land feels natural and gives you a sense of what occurred. The signs marking out the front lines are well done and really help understand/picture. Really nice for a walk around. We were glad to have included on our itinerary. Nice restaurant across the road for lunch.

There is so much going on here. Knowing about the history of the place, it's amazing to think that such a relatively small area hosted some of the most fierce battle of WWI. Have a good look around. Look down a lot, as there are markers everywhere for where the front was who was in control of it. Blast bunkers are everywhere, and various shelters. It's amazing and well worth the visit.

By the way, we decided to visit the WWI battlefields while staying in Brussels using a hire car rather than an organised tour. It is so much better, and cheaper in some cases. There was myself and my two teenage sons. Would have cost between £200-300 with a tour company, but we paid £70 for a car for the day, £35 in petrol, and about £0 in parking! Places we visited were mainly free (cemeteries, memorials etc). And driving around Belgium is easy! I even picked the car up during rush hour in the middle of Brussels and still got it back in one piece! Highly recommended.

Really special place and preserved well. There is a lot to see so don’t just stick to the wooden path here. There are bunkers and an exploded shell, a few memorials here too and right next to Caterpillar crater. There is parking here too. We came here late afternoon so it wasn’t busy, however when we were leaving a bus tour parked up so i wouldn’t want to be there when a tour was there.

In itself it doesn't seem like anything special. But when you realize that beneath the grass the landscape is still littered with craters from shell impacts and destroyed bunkers and you realize how many fatalities the fighting for this hill cost, you become deeply impressed. The enormous hole in the caterpillar caused by 34,000 kg of explosives also makes a deep impression on us. Well worth a visit. And then use your imagination and go back in your mind to the time of the First World War.

There is not masses to see here but it is well worth a visit. The proximity of the opposing front lines at this point is striking. The short walk to “the caterpillar” just the other side of the railway line is a must. We visited on a beautiful clear April morning and you could hear woodpeckers in the trees around - so peaceful and in such contrast to the horrors that had been witnessed here. I had not heard of what had happened at this bill, it’s an amazing story and I am really glad I visited.

After weeks of preparing in school, we finally went to Ypres, one of the most important battlefields of the Great War. We got bombarded with information about this place and it was nice to finally go there. On the day of the excursion, it rained cats and dogs. This was a bit annoying of course, but it did make you realise what the soldiers more than hundred years ago went through. They didn’t have the great rain resistant coats we have today either.

Our first stop of the day was Hill 60, a hill on which many soldiers died and exploded due to English landmines . On top, we could see the city lying in the distance. The hill was very different to the other hill we saw that day, it looked like they fought there yesterday and apart from some old bunkers, there was not much to see there.

It may have been a bit boring, but I will remember it for the rest of my life. The atmosphere of war was still there even after all those years, the war became tangible. You could see the places where the trenches had been, and the craters the landmines left. I was staggered how close enemies lived together in the dugouts and how much destruction men could produce. If you want to understand the Great War, look on the Internet, if you want to feel it, go to Hill 60.

The city of death

I have recently got the chance to visit the beautiful city of Ypres on a school trip. It was a breath-taking experience that I will never forget. We have been on our feet the whole the day long and have visited a lot of places where the soldiers have given their lives for their country. So I wrote about the atmosphere that I have experienced and the most astonishing place of the day.

For the people who don’t know; Ypres is a historic city located in the province of West Flanders in Belgium. We know this heroic city for its pivotal role in WW1. During this war Ypres was seen as a important milestone for both the German as the Allies. As the result of this; the city was completely destructed by bombs and shells. In addition, it became known as the place where millions young soldiers around the world have found their death.

On 7 march 2023 our school had visited the rebuilt city. At the begin of the journey I didn’t expect much from it and was a bit bored with this trip. But eventually we have visited al of the dark places of the city and my opinion changed drastically. I saw and realised how many lives the war had taken. And I truly felt this atmosphere of the tragedy that this people mussed experience.

One of the places that had this impact on my feelings was Hill 60/62. When I saw the 2 craters I was surprised off how fast the modern warfare had developed at that time. But besides that I saw the horror that people could do to each other and realised that the soldiers actually died for nothing. The English mines had blown in 1 second the whole battalion of the Germans in the air. And there was even nothing left of the soldiers to bury. The humanity keeps hoping to forget those cruel things forever but the wars keep coming back throughout our history. So the only thing that we really can do is remember and honor the soldiers that have given their lives to end this wars for the better world.

We had a guide on our battlefield tour. Very sombre feeling walking in the footsteps of the troops of WW1 and knowing so many lost their lives here. Also knowing that they remain buried here as well.

This was part of an afternoon 3 hour Salient tour found in the British Grenadier Bookshop.

Amazing story to be told by the guide and to walk around the area where this happened truly remarkable.

The caterpillar craters was overwhelming.

Our guide was fantastic. Personal friendly and engaged with us the whole trip.
