We spent a pleasant hour at this lovely museum while the rain fell. It gave us a great opportunity to see the gargoyles funnelling water away from the edge of the buidling. The mosaic floor is perhaps what you will come here to see and represents part of Faro's early settlers. There are also roman artifacts as well as temporary exhibitions.
It has a very reasoanble entry fee - a few euros - but is cash only.

We came to faro by train and it’s about 1/2-3/4 mile from the station in the old town
Nice building and exhibits very good value at €2 per adult (€1 for over 65s)

The Faro Municipal Museum is undoubtedly one of the largest museums in the Algarve, despite its size. It has quite heterogeneous Collections, very well exposed, in an original setting that is the Convent of Our Lady of the Assumption. It is a Renaissance building built in the 16th century.
The museum is open all day, without meridian cuts and admission costs two euros. A dressing room for bags is provided. The tour lasts a good hour. We found the welcome pleasant.
From the beginning of the tour, a superb cross in azulejos appears before the visitors. It dates from the 18th century. The visit continues in the cloister. Some impressively sized amphorae are presented. You can admire the sumptuous white dome dominated by sorts of acroteriums in the form of flames. The arches are simple, the white walls well maintained but the keystones have not been preserved. On the other hand, the gargoyles are still in existence. In an old chapel whose choir ceiling has preserved magnificent traces of polychrome was a temporary exhibition of photographs that I found uninteresting, but that is my review, not an absolute.
The first room is dedicated to local objects, we follow their history starting from the Roman period. This is how one can approach columns, capitals, bases, steles... Some remains are exhibited being completed by their silhouette drawn on the walls, in order to appreciate their original state. This allows us to project ourselves intelligently. At the end of the room is a sarcophagus containing a skeletal remains.
Then we pass through the room containing the museum’s Rising Star: the Ocean Mosaic discovered in 1926. In the center, the god Ocean occupies an important place of this huge soil. Time has unfortunately done its work but the main one is kept. The Latin inscription has its basis is explained on a screen. The museography is well done. In the background, the image of a marsh serves as a stage in front of which an old boat filled with amphorae is exposed. There are a few display cases containing oil lamps and coins. At the entrance, do not miss stopping in front of the busts, especially of Hadrian and Agrippina.
It is possible to climb in the corridor to see its wooden ceiling and its aedicule with its polychromes. At the time of our visit, a temporary exhibition on Romanticism, romantic portraits and its actresses and actors. It includes a bust of Napoleon and a self-portrait of Delacroix. This is followed by a permanent exhibition of paintings on red and grey walls. Unfortunately, the lighting is not enough because it is too dark for paintings that are already dark. They are mainly religious works of Italian and Portuguese schools from the 16th to the 19th centuries. But there is a copy of the Tower of Babel.
One point of improvement regarding this room: its temperature. 28 degrees really seems too high.
On your way out, you come across a heraldic exhibition and you can stop in front of the stone of arms of the city of Faro; some with the arms of some kings of Portugal; that of the Bishop of the Algarve, José Pereira de Lacerda. I found these remains remarkably preserved.
This is followed by an exhibition on the theme of the sacred and the profane, with objects allowing communication between humans and gods. I especially noticed a guinea fowl: a seal with religious motifs used to mark cakes and bread baked in the communal oven to recognize them.
Here is in a few lines, the summary of the visit of this unpretentious museum, presenting original objects. While the paintings deserve better lighting, the rest of the Collections are quite well presented. The visit, very inexpensive, is especially suitable for adults, there is really no play area for children. What to do if you visit Faro from a historical perspective.

My wife and I had some free time one afternoon, and we decided to go back to the museum as we had passed it on an earlier walking tour.
It took us a little more than an hour to get through all of the exhibits. Faro has an interesting history driven by whichever culture was in control at any given time, and this museum gives a good, short, explanation.
I wouldn’t go out of my way to fit this museum into my trip, but it was well worth the time and cost.

Small but enjoyable experience back in time in Faro. Free entry the day I was there, possibly because there was some disturbance from setting up for a concert/festival. Beautiful surroundings in an old convent with a few varying exhibitions.

We had a very negative experience right off the bay with the woman selling tickets. Didn’t want to break a 20, didn’t smile or act pleasant in anyway. You’d think she was being paid to keep guests out. The museum itself was small but interesting. Don’t plan more than 39 minutes there.

A great museum in the old town of Faro, Portugal. We were there on a Sunday and admission was free.
Various exhibitions were open. It is very nice when art and historical buildings are used together like this. The building is, however, quite run down in some places and should be renovated. There were a few visitors but it wasn't too crowded. The staff were very reserved in the background. If you visit Faro you should definitely make a detour to the Municipal Museum of Faro.

I consider that the best thing about the museum is the building itself, with its rectangular shape and an internal garden that provides a very pleasant place to be. I found the expositions to be weak.

Just a "brief overview" of the history of the Algarve area (specifically in regards to its "archaeology & art") is what this museum offers on its "2 levels" with just about two moderate-sized rooms on each level (so yes just brief amounts of time needed to go through all those rooms each with a fairly limited quantity of items on display). But having said that, to see in those not-too-many displays is quite an impressive "historical timeline" especially among those seen on the first level (the level for archaeology) dating back to about the Roman time including the "notable displays" in my opinion of some busts of Roman emperors, a full-sized human skeleton under a glass floor & an "elaborate-designed mosaic" which covers some sizeable area of the floor in one room; and not as much far back in time as on the first level but still going back to about the time of Renaissance I would say are the displays on the second level (the level for art) many of which are these sizeable & colorful paintings of "religion-themed" scenes, and actually there was also at the time (not sure if it was a temporary exhibit) a room full of works portraying some "nature & social" scenes by some artist from just about a hundred years ago (and who was likely a local artist from this area). And yes, apart from the display rooms of this museum is also its fair-sized "inner courtyard" with some hedge rows arranged in squares & rectangles (for some nice photo-ops I would say from the "corridors around" on both levels and where also to see along those corridors are a number of "earth pots" & "stone plates" with inscriptions likely of the royal coat-of-arms).
Located at the "old town" area of the city, also just in the vicinity of this place are: the Faro Cathedral with like an L-shaped square around it (more impressed by the beautiful heritage buildings around the square than the cathedral itself which in any case was "closed for entry" likely due to being weekend); the "town wall" with really no visible sign of decay & damage I would say despite its centuries-old age; and two outdoor "drawings-on-tiles" depicting some scenes from the medieval time around the 1200's (both of which actually right beside the "town wall" and not far from one another although I kind of wonder if those two drawings have always existed on those same spots through all those centuries!). And yes, also not too far from this museum (but located outside the "old town") is the "beautiful area" around the city's marina with: some "impressive number" of boats in the marina; a fish-headed mermaid statue & a 'love (heart) Faro' sign right beside the marina; a small vertical monument at the road intersection near the marina; and also some streets lined with various shops & restaurants (for my breakfast before entering the "old town" and for some nice "Faro souvenirs" before heading back to my place on the oceanfront at the end of the day).
