Coming from the ticket office, you reach the entrance gate hidden in the dark shade of mighty trees. If you pass through these nestled between thick boulders, you arrive at a magical place of silence. After a small forecourt with fountain follows the church with adjoining cells and dining room, including kitchen. The cork-clad interiors are just as extraordinary as the location itself, on rocks (and partly integrated into the rock !!!) and protected by dense "primordial forest". Only on their knees, through a tiny door were the individual cells accessible! The entire buildings (including laundry and water house) are characterized by great barrenness and abstention of its former inhabitants. Afterwards you come to a beautiful courtyard and another chapel. From there you reach the gardens with an opening to the distant Atlantic Ocean. The monastery is probably being permanently restored piece by piece and is already beautifully prepared in its present state. The garden with vegetable beds is also currently being expanded or planted. At the edge of the garden is an interesting information building with all kinds of interesting facts about the monastery.
We loved this place and can only recommend a visit!!!

Away from the tourist circuit, this monastery, immersed in vegetation and dug into the rock, has immense charm. The visit takes place in a silence disturbed only by the song of birds. An unexpected moment of grace while most of the other sites in Sintra are very disappointing and victims of mass tourism.

We thought this was one of the nicer things to see in Sintra, for several reasons.
1. The authenticity. The realization that people want to live like this, for something they believe in, makes it very special. There is plenty of information available on the internet, and audio tours can be downloaded via an app.
2. It is in a beautiful, serene place, where you have to be quiet, but you can look into everything, and it runs beautifully through nature. Beautiful sea views from the gardens. The monastery is truly one with nature.
3. Because this is a more difficult place to reach, there are no bus loads of tourists, and the younger ladies who are photographed/filmed by their partners while pretending to enjoy a view with their hair flowing are also missed here. Delicious.

We purchased our entry tickets online. Unable to be there on the reserved date, we tried without success to postpone the visit date by 2 days, within the time limits specified on the site.
We showed up on the new date and were refused entry on the grounds that we had not changed the reservation in time, which was false.
Given the number of vehicles in the parking lot, there must have been a maximum of 30 people visiting.
A good tip: avoid buying your tickets in advance and visiting this site.
There are many other wonders in Sintra which are really worth the detour and whose managers are more correct.

for those who want to see sintra away from it's colourful palaces and attractive gardens, you can't go far wrong with this down to earth convent which still has several buildings intact and certainly gets me contemplating, throw in some pleasant gardens and a few short walking trails through the forests nearby and your if in for a enjoyable and quiet day.

Nowhere else in the world have I seen an ancient monk potty. This place was so fun to explore! No one else around. I highly suggest this off the beaten path convent. There is a great hiking path from the Palace of Monserrat.

This had slipped and out of the itinerary as planning for the trip progressed. When we left home it was in it, but due to my wife not feeling well, we lost two of the four days we had planned to be in Sintra. A third day started real late and was diverted to Mafra when GPS had us running in circles when we tried to go to Sintra National Palace and I had mistakenly not changed it from walking to driving on a previous search and finally in frustration saw the sign to Mafra and since we missed it on way down from north due to getting out late and mistakenly adding Alcobaca because I couldn't remember we had seen it before after seeing Batalha Monastery and then not having sufficient time to see the Palace there. Is that a run-on sentence? Any way the fourth day we saw Sintra National Palace and then Quinta da Regaleira. And though our time was up in Sintra because we had to be down in Estoi in southern Portugal and we had a hotel that night, I put my foot down and said we were going to spend the day in Sintra so we could see Montserrate. Besides it was already too late to drive to Estoi and we were too tired to do it, regardless. So we changed our hotel reservation in Estoi to start the following day. When we woke, early for us, we set our sights on going straight to Montserrate, but the GPS wasn't cooperating and took us all over the place. We finally pulled out the map and triangulated using the GPS to get us there. As we went, we passed by a sign for Convento dos Capuchos and I decided we would make a quick stop. How's that for an intro?

Now to the actual review, if you are still paying attention. I found the place interesting, bordering on fascinating. Truthfully, it was unlike any other place I had seen. It was truly minimalist monastic style of life. Tiny spaces to live, work, eat, spare as can be. San Marco in Florence was a luxury hotel by comparison. I had to have an admiration for the people who gave up all semblance of a normal life for their religious fervor. You can't be wishy-washy in your beliefs and bunk here. I think that when I learn something on a trip that really brings to life what I had read about, makes me understand something at its core, it's special and will be remembered forever.

I agree about the nature part. It was off on its own, in nature and that added to it. It was peaceful and quiet. Hell, I could have signed up.

This is not a glossy tourist site like the palaces, but if you have the time and I submit you should make the time, you should take a detour and try something different. Who knows? It might even change your life.

This is a very different place to go to enjoy nature, and see how the friars lived. It is quiet and serene. A
A very nice diversion from the cities.
