Excellent concert performance of Franz Lehar’s The Merry Widow in a stunningly beautiful concert hall. The private boxes are terrific. You must purchase the five seat box when reserving, but I noticed most boxes were occupied by only 2-3 people and it’s still less expensive than ticket prices at home.

We went here last night to see Donizetti's Elisir D' Amore. The theatre is a nice XIX'th century opera house similar to those in most European cities if a bit smaller than some. Well run with charming staff.
The singers were up to standard, the orchestra lived up to it's reputation, but the production!!!! OMG. Cheapest set I have ever seen - plain backdrop the entire time ( never heard of a slide projector?) a couple of wonky ladders that had nothing to do with the plot and a few cheap props brought on from time to time - a couple of wooden crates etc.
It was one of those (aparently fashionable in Lisbon) minimalist performances (a.k.a. cheap).
The costumes were " bring the cheapest dress you can find- you're supposed to be peasants". So instead of country peasants we got underdressed cleaning-ladies. Plus a few bits of outfit that someone had got from the prop's department after a 5 minute search. The sergeant (from XIX century Basque country we are told) was wearing a Roman helmet and a Scottish kilt with a very seedy sporran. The quack dottore who was greeted as a magnificent personality ("a Duke or Marquis" in the lyrics) arrived in a boiler suit with what was supposed to be a parachute. (Cheaper than a carriage)
The leading lady, a "wealthy landowner" according to the synopsis, who was rather well-built (nothing wrong with that -she is ,after all an opera singer) was wearing a cheap shift she had borrowed from her maid or picked up at Primark on the way to the theatre and that emphasised her generous physique, over white fat bare legs and bare feet.
I spent the first half trying to imagine how two sane males could possible have fallen in love with her - maybe the Elisir really works. Didn't stay for the second half - felt too sorry for Donizetti.
If you're in Lisbon and want to see an Opera, use You Tube.

On June 30th, 1793, Queen Maria I herself inaugurated this magnificent Opera House, as the previous one had been totally destroyed by the terrible earthquake of 1755. "Teatro Nacional de São Carlos" has been, since then, one of the most important and active Opera Houses in the whole world. Located at the heart of Lisbon's historical "Chiado" quarter, the theater can accommodate around 1,200 spectators in its luxuriously decorated interior. It is really extremely beautiful and has awesome painted ceilings. While in Lisbon, check its busy programme of operas and concerts. Mybe Verdi's "La Forza del Destino" or Donizetti's "Maria Stuarda" are being performed at this prestigious Opera House. Enjoy!

A well run beautiful theatre. I went to see Opera Mary Stuart. Easy to get to, staff very friendly, and the seating arrangments were controlled so no confusion as to where to sit.

If you have the time arrange a tour, you will not be disappointed. This theatre has been operating since 1793 & luckily escaped damage during the Salazar regime, when it was just closed. All the original opera sets are still there and the backstage area is unchanged. Also the Royal Box is in tact and so beautiful ! Box office opens at 1pm and if you want to arrange a tour before you come you can email the theatre here visitas@saocarlos.pt as we did.

Went to tour the Opera house within the hours recommended ...we were told that the tour guide would be free within an hour ...so we came back ...no tour guide waited 25 minutes while mostly being ignored and finally told it would be at least another 1/2 hour waiting but maybe we should come back at 2:30 when ticket office opens ......we wanted a tour not tickets for a show

Skrevet 23. september 2018
I am probably too late but I always purchase tickets before I travel. Just check Opera web site. Go to buy tickets and you can select seats. I usually google photos of opera hpuse so I can see seating configuaration, If necessary, I call the ticket office. Most speak English. Hope you had fun.

How do I find out what opera or classical music concerts are on in Lisbon in October 2018. I have now spent hours searching without success. Help, please!
Skrevet 27. juni 2018
Try Googling "Lisbon concerts performances October 2018" in English. You might also go first to the "Portugal official tourism information" or the same with Lisbon. Lisbon Tourism is the city's very informative site for all sorts of tourist info.
