The Panathenaic Way was the ancient road, built as a processional path that ran ll the way from Athens’ main gate, right up to the top of the Acropolis.
Every 4 years, Athenians celebrated the Panathenaia festival and made their way along the road towards the Altar of Athena on the Acropolis.
We walked along the short stretch that runs through the Ancient Agora. It’s a dry, dusty pathway but in ancient times, it was the scene of the grand Panathenaic procession. Men brought sacrificial animals, herding noisy goats, rams, bulls, cows, and sheep along the way while elderly men brought olive branches. Women carried water-jugs on their shoulders and baskets of offerings for the gods.
Later when we were at the Acropolis Museum, we saw scenes of this Panathenaic Way procession on the Parthenon frieze.

The longest and most important street of Ancient Athens was the street of Panathenaia. The Athenians simply called it Dromos. It was 1050 meters long, started from Dipylos in Kerameikos, crossed the central square of the Ancient Agora and ended at the entrance of the Acropolis. During the Panathenaic celebration, the sacred procession in honor of the goddess Athena passed through here. The frieze of the Parthenon depicts the Panathenaic procession, which included a series of competitions, both athletic and artistic. The fact that we are today able to walk a significant part of this road in the area of the Ancient Agora is in itself a sufficient reason for our presence here. How blessed we are!

It is part of the ancient agora of athens.
Entrance to walking the panathenaic way is included in entry ticket of visiting ancient agora of athens.
One of the better spots at ground level to view the Acropolis - and has an importance in Ancient greece as discussed in the musuem.
its a great walk around the ruins.
As mentioned in other reviews - ancient agora is a must visit.
Tickets for 10 euros/person.

A roasting hot late morning my twin brother Stephen and I trekked up the Panathenic Way and we were rewarded with great views of the wonderful Acropolis and of the city of Athens.
Not steep really ,it's a very pleasant walk ,lots to take in ,glad we did it ,lots to see and take in ,loved the views of the ancient ruins ,descending we hit a taverna to enjoy a well earned iced cold beer, most definitely well worth checking out if you're planning on visiting Athens.

We visited in October during covid. It wasn't crowded and we were exploring. Great views and nice to chill and relax away from the crowds in the city. Worth it if you have time to kill.

Precioso paseo peatonal que recorre toda la ladera del Acrópolis y desde el que se obtienen muy bonitas vistas.

Probably the most important route way in Greek antiquity, it led from the Dipylon Gate to the Parthenon, passing through the Ancient Agora.
A procession along it was the first event of the Panathenaic Festival and it culminated at the Temple of Athena on the Acropolis.
During the Festival chariot races also took place along it.

This roadway, the principal thoroughfare, runs from the Dipylon to the Parthenon, just about 1 KM. It was the processional way for Panathenaic festival parade. When you enter the Agora complex, you enter on the Panathenaic road and runs in front of the Stoa of Attalos

The Panathenaic Way starts at the Diplyon, which was the main gateway into Ancient Athens - to the north of the Ancient Agora, and ends at the Acropolis. You have to use your imagination when walking along it to picture in your minds eye the procession during the annual Panathenaia. festival, after which the Way is named, which ended at the Temple of Athena Nike (The Victorious), on the summit of the Acropolis. The Panathenaic Way is just over 1 kilometre in length and 'sensible' shoes and a bottle of water are recommended.
