The theatre is mostly in ruins but you can see just how large the place is. The thought of it in its completness was mind blowing seeing the area of the hill it occupies. Imagine the great and good of ancient Greece performing here and you can sense the historical significance.

The Theatre of Dionysus was the first theatre in the world and the largest and most important theatre in ancient Greece. It is one of the very impressive sights at the Acropolis.
Confusingly, there are are two theatres quite close to each other so it’s fairly easy to confuse this one with the smaller Odeon. If like us, you enter through the south gate, then this is the very first main sight that you come to.
The very first dance and mime took place at this site in the 6th century BC, not as plays but as ritual celebrations to honour the gods. Over the centuries, the site transformed into the theatre that we see today. At its height, it could hold 17,000 spectators in rows upon row of tiered seats. That’s a pretty amazing number when you consider that the London Palladium only holds 2,286 seats, the Hammersmith Apollo holds around 3500 and the Sydney Opera House around 5,700.
The great plays of Sophocles, Euripides, and Aeschylus, the comedies of Aristophanes were all performed here and performances could last up to 6 hours. Looking at those stone seats, Im not sure how anyone lasted that long.
The VIPs of course sat in the front rows which were fitted out with much more luxurious throne-like marble seating with carved legs and armrests (not sure that would be a whole lot more comfortable on the bottom though).
The statue alongside the theatre is of the ancient Greek playwright, Menander.
TICKET TIP: I’d highly recommend buying the combo ticket. At €30, it is excellent value. It lasts for 5 days and includes entry to 7 ancient sites. Entry to the Acropolis on its own is €20 so if it is your first time to Athens, it makes sense to buy this ticket (unless you’re here in winter when many sites are half price).

You have to walk right past it so cannot miss it. It's size is what is so impressive. We could not understand how someone on the top row would hear what the performers were saying....larger than most modern football stadiums

Buenas vistas, desde arriba de la acrópolis se aprecia todo el teatro y es una pasada. Os viene de paso verlo cuando vais a darle la vuelta al Partenón. Además las vistas de la ciudad + el teatro son increíbles.

We entered through the south side entrance to the Acropolis, so this was the first major place we came across. The history behind the Theater of Dionysus is incredible. Great way to start our visit to the Acropolis.

Localizado próximo de Acrópole, o Teatro de Dionísio é importante por ser "o berço do teatro". Está parcialmente preservado, mas tem-se que levar em conta a data da sua construção. Compre o ingresso combinado com outras atrações, vale muito mais a pena!

The Theater of Dionysus is at the bottom of the hill on the south slope of the Acropolis. This site is the remains of an amphitheater and is not to be confused with the ancient theater of Herod Atticus Odeon, which is much more complete higher up on the slope.

Can only be viewed when purchasing an Acropolis admission ticket. Worth a stop in the way to the top of the Acropolis. Theater remnants still remain.

Este teatro está ubicado en la parte baja de la Acrópolis. No está en tan buen estado como el de Herodes, pero es interesante de ver, además que queda en el mismo camino.

Hello,
I am having a hard time finding the web site to view concerts/purchase tickets for this venue for June and July. Do you have the website?
Thank you!

Hello:
I’m not sure if they actually have concerts at the Theater of Dionysus but they do have concerts at the nearby Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
You can find events in Athens and Epidaurus which include the Odeon of Herodes Atticus by going to the website for “greekfestival.gr”. I can't put in a link since TripAdvisor doesn’t allow website links in answering questions.
I hope this helps.

Hi, I'm planning to visit the Theater of Dionysus before the Acropolis. Can I actually buy the €30 combo ticket at the Theater of Dionysus? Am planning to enter Acropolis afterwards from the secondary entrance. Is that possible? Thanks.

Yes I think you can buy the full ticket at that entrance. I came out that way and wish I had known about it .

I would like to book the Family Room with Garden View (we have a family of 5). Is this room Non-Smoking? And if not, do you have a room for 5 people which is non-smoking?
