We booked a private tour and had the pleasure and privilege of having the curator, Danielle as our guide.
The tour was enlightening and informative, in fact we wished it had been longer.
The staff in the museum shop were also very helpful.
All in all a wonderful experience, one of the highlights of our trip to Europe.
Don’t miss this museum when you visit Athens!

The Athens Jewish Museum is a well-curated and informative experience, offering a wealth of exhibits with clear and detailed explanations. We found it to be thoroughly engaging, with plenty to see and learn about. However, to truly appreciate the depth and context of the museum, we highly recommend visiting with a knowledgeable guide, like Michalis from Jewish Athens Tours. His insights can significantly enhance your understanding and make the visit even more meaningful.

This is a lovely museum that you can visit in a few hours before or after lunch. It documents the history of Jews living in Greece. There is great air conditioning and a little gift shop. There is also a space to work in, which you may access if you email the museum beforehand.

This is a very well organized and well thought out museum. From a reconstructed former synagogue to holiday items and the Holocaust. They have a nice presentation of 7 women who survived the Holocaust, where they tell their story at various points in time.

Very interesting and thought provoking museum. Compared to other museums it is on the small side, but even so makes up by telling the history of the Jewish people in Greece. From the beginning throughout the millennia to present day. Lots of personal stories throughout the museum. I was surprised to learn how many fellow Greeks defied the Nazis to help protect the Jewish community throughout Greece. The whole tour took us just over an hour. All the exhibits are in Greek and English.

Neat museum, in a nice area and with knowledgeable staff. The exhibits, combined with history, give an additional picture of life in our city.

Nicely done and learned a lot about the vast number that of Jews that perished in the Holocaust and the few that were protected by extraordinary efforts of good people. Also learned about the history of the Jews that came to Greece fleeing persecution and exile. Nice collection of artifacts and display of Jewish lifecycle events. Worth the visit.

Lots of reviews mention that this museum tells the story of Jewish people in Athens but actually the museum does relatively little of this. It mainly focuses on a general introduction to Judaism and Jewish traditions - this is covered much better in other larger Jewish museums in Europe. The museum does tell the horrific story of Geek Jewish people in the Holocaust, which is done well. However, the lack of information on Jewish life in Greece and its small size mean that the museum isn't really worth a visit, especially at 10 Euros.

We visited as a family of adults.
This was a brilliant, eye-opening and -- at times -- harrowing experience.
In general, I admired the museum's mission to record and disseminate the cultural heritage of the Greek Jewish communities -- it is so important to cultivate such dialogues and ensure that intercultural understanding is nurtured and promoted.
Scattered throughout the museum you can see the fruits of the HANNAH project, and the narratives were in both Greek and English. From the project's website: "Our main objective was to understand the evolution of contemporary antisemitism as it has evolved since the end of the Holocaust and World War II. Therefore, we initially aimed at gathering narratives from that age group called 'second-generation Holocaust survivors', i.e. children born after the war to Jewish parents who had suffered persecution. These children were themselves the actual proof and hope that the destroyed Jewish communities of Greece could be reborn. The stages of their lives coincided with the reconstruction of the Jewish communities in Greece."
There are several levels to the museum. The "basement" has lots of information on the Torah and the synagogue, with relevant exhibits. There was a section on the Shoah, which was so very sad. It was touching to read the attempts made by the Greek Orthodox clergy to save Jewish Greeks, with the issuing of forged baptismal certificates, pushing back against the quisling government, etc.
There is a good virtual tour on the Jewish Museum's website. The actual museum was extremely well organised, with extensive information in Greek and English.
Finally, the museum also has a small and very nice gift shop, where you can purchase music, books, etc.
After visiting, the only thing I can think and hope and say is: nie wieder.

Is it possible to visit the museum independently and not as part of a walking tour with other sites?

Dear traveller. Usually all museums and sightseeing are closed on 25-26 th December because Christmas is public holiday. You must check the web sites of the museum you are likely to visit to see if there are holiday exhibitions or Christmas events. Otherwise museums are usually closed.
