This relatively modern 19th century church is on a street that runs along one side of the Hadrians Library site. It’s not something you would go out of your way to see but we walked past after visiting the Library and on our way to the Roman Agora. It is set back a little from the roadside but its doors were open so we peeked inside.
We wondered about the name of the church. Was it to do with Zacchaeus and the tax-collectors of the Bible? We were on completely the wrong track on this and later discovered that ‘Taxiarchs’ refers to the Archangels (Gabriel and Michael). This of course made a lot more sense.
What you see from the outside, is a large, two-storey, creamy-butter yellow facade with fresh white trim around the windows, columns and arches. The facade is all arches and arched windows, with a bell tower on the side and a central red-tiled dome.
Inside, the lighting is gloomy but every surface is covered in ornate, darkened gold decoration and detailed paintings of Mary, Jesus and the saints. It was much more decorative inside, than I’d imagined.
This is only a brief stop, but if you are passing, it is a beautiful church with an unexpectedly elaborate interior.

Found this beautiful church as my twin brother Stephen and I were exploring around the vibrant Plaka District.
Holy Church Of The All Great Taxiarchs And The Virgin Mary is a relatively modern church constructed in the 1920's ,a church typical of the type found in this city ,I loved the facade ,it's cute twin bell towers looks superb ,it's such a beautiful church ,very photogenic ,adds to the joy of walking around the Plaka District and easy to locate along Taxiarchon.
