The museum is OPEN and it is high tech actually. The museum guard it opened in March 2023.

Because it was off season, I only paid 3 euro for the admissions fee which included the museum entrance! The museum was small (one floor) but has one of the most impressive sculptures (karyatid, basically a maiden as a column, in a highly well detailed, preserved condition of her face and jewely details). That was worth 3 euro alone to see. The museum even had digital simulations of all the buildings on screens that you can select to really imagine how it was like. The rest of the site is somewhat bare, you have use your imagination with the descriptions of each place.

Surrounding town in November 2023 was like a ghost town, hardly any shops opened for eating or otherwise.

Visiting the site of the Eleusinian Mysteries was my #1 goal in Athens. The site is very cool but unfortunately much of it is roped off right now, seemingly for no reason, and the museum is also closed. It was still very nice to visit, though, especially as we were one of just two visiting couples when we dropped by.

I’m particularly interested in mythology and ritual practices and as such, Eleusis is a must see. When I asked our tour guide about the importance of sites to ancient Greeks religiously, he listed three: Delphi, Delos, and Eleusis.

This is the site of the Eleusinian Mysteries which occurred every autumn for thousands of years. While there are mixed theories about what exactly happened as part of these rites, they were a fundamental part of religious life for ancient Athenians.

The site itself is under quite a bit of restoration/construction at the moment and the museum was sadly closed when we went, but the site is still lovely and so refreshing to have a site nearly entirely focused on the mother/daughter pair of Demeter and Persephone (there is also a rare temple/cave to Hades/Pluto here). There is good signage that helps explain things but if you want to understand the rites and what the theories are about what actually happened during them, you’ll need to research that yourself.

It is hot and sunny with very little shade so bring a hat and sunscreen.

General information- I visited the ancient site of Eleusis at the beginning of October 2020. It is approximately half an hour from the Northern suburbs of Athens via Attica Tollway (Attiki Odos). The museum was closed due to some construction works. The ticket for one adult was 6 Euros, while the kids enjoyed free entrance. Parking your car might be problematic.

Why you should visit it? - If you think about it Eleusis was one of the most important locations of the ancient Greek civilaztion, yet today it is more or less forgotten. It was there that The Great Eleusinian Mysteries were held every year for the cult of Demeter and Persephone

Very little is known for this cult, since the participants were bonded with oaths of secrecy. The cult predates the written history and lasted until the Roman emperor Theodosius I, who closed the sanctuaries by decree during the Persecution of pagans in the late Roman Empire in 392 AD. The last remnants of the Mysteries were wiped out in 396 AD, when Arian Christians under Alaric, King of the Goths, destroyed and desecrated the old sacred sites.

Until then most of the Greek and Roman known kings, generals, emperors, philosophers etc were initiated into them.

If you don't use a guide, make sure that you have read enough, in order to know on what holy stones you are stepping.
