Karfi is a Minoan settlement of about 3000 people which was abandoned peacefully in 900 BC, because the place was harsh and hostile. Now you are not visiting an ancient site, because the bushes have covered it. You are visiting a place with wonderful views. Take your car up the mountain after the Health centre at Tzermiado and drive keeping to the left. At one point the road splits take the left fork. The right fork will take to the white church where the views over Lasithi are spectacular. The left fork will take you to the small chapel of St Ariadne.Leave your car at the chapel and head to the top of the mountain pick.
For the hikers best way to do it is via Kera, climb up the mountain which looks like a tit and continue all the way down to Tzermiadon. Take the tarmac road back to Kera for a wonderful lunch at Nikis. She cooks pork lamb and chicken in the wood oven which is unique.
Take water, hat, sun protection if you go in the summer, in which case the route from Kera will be very hot.
No need for a guide, not much to see other than the spectacular views. Found a baby lamb dying and took to the vet. It now lives in a place at Hersonisos called Ippikos omilos. The lamb is the mascot of the restaurant and they call it Mike the Hike.

We read about the ascent to Karfi in the rough guide to Crete. Finding the trail in the car was a bit tricky but we did drive as far as the road went in our little volkswagen up hire car!
At the west end of the village tzermidao (the end you come in at if coming from Heraklion) turn left at a big brown tourist sign for the church of st Martin and follow this windy road all the way up, where it flattens out keep LEFT (not right up a driveway to a church that is not open currently- this results in having to make a 50 point turn on the single narrow track!!)
The guidebook then says there’s a whitewashed chapel at the base of the trail, which is not really true (see picture attached)
He trail is not entirely obvious but luckily once you’ve spooked the heard of sheep they run away from you along the path of least resistance- helpfully highlighting it for you!
The views from the top are spectacular. To be completely honest it’s difficult to make out the archeological site...but it’s beautiful all the same.
Took 30 minutes to get up in trainers and I am by no means fit!

Simply amazing views and meaningful minoican settlement. We started the route from Tzermiadon, but not from the point you can find ar the right side of the Health Care building (E4), but 200 meters left of this building (locals' recommendation). If you have a car, you can park it infront of this hospital and then walk parallel to the road 200 meters to the left. Tou will find a small path on the right side of the road that is closed to wallnut trees and fields. Walk through this path until you reach a door which prevent goats and sheeps to escape. Open this door and continue ascending to the mountain until you find old bases of windmills. Turn then to the right and continue the main path. You will see in front of you an imponent mountain. This is your goal: the Karfi mountain. After reaching the top and visiting the ancient minoican settlement of Karfi, you can descend through another path to come back to the Health care building crossing a second small valley. Enjoy it and be respectful!!!

Above the village of Tzermiado is a a stunning place called Karfi. Karfi is a hill top ruin site of the Minoan culture.
You can walk up from the village which is about 6km or drive to an unspoilt mini plateau and walk up the last 30 minutes.
We saw two other people, Eagles, goats and vultures. The view from the summit is just stupendous and you can be totally alone. It is well worth the climb.

It's a stunning archaeological hike, moderately difficult across some goat paths with amazing scenery all around. At the top you're greeted with 360 degree panoramas, Minoan ruins and amazing plant-life. Highly recommended short hike worth 1000's of photos.

I'm looking forward to visiting Karfi at the end of March, but I only have a couple of hours and would like to be able to linger at the Minoan site as long as possible. Mirfster mentioned the option of driving up to the plateau and walking from there.
1. Is this possible in a small rental car?
2. If I am able to drive, where can I park?
Thanks!
