The view is beautiful. Beautiful to see the eternal snow on the mountain. Also very high. A long mountain range with high peaks in between. A valley can be seen between the mountains.

Hello!
My review is about “Spilios Agapitos (Zolotas) refugee” in Olympus.
It was my first time I climbed on Olympus at the end of October 2023. I was alone.
So. Tips that maybe will be helpful for U to feel more comfortable in this wonderful trip.
1. First. Don’t pay for the blanket in Refugee - 9 euro - it’s better to say I have it - no one will not check U. And U will not need it. Enyway it’s from the paper, not comfortable, so if U are without sleeping bag - just take from home standard size pillowcase.
2. Take for your head not a cap - take sport headline - U are sweating so much, cup will make it worse, but the headband will keep your head dry.
3. Take earplugs - if someone is snoring.
4. Take apples - exactly what U want there to eat.
5. Warm socks for the night. They have enough blankets, but without very warm socks it will be cold. There is no heating.
6. For the neck - something warm - U sweat and water goes to your neck. The wind blows and U feel very cold. Even if it’s hot and sun.
7. Take flip flops. They don’t allow to walk in your shoes in the main building where U can have dinner. U can take from them flip flops, but it’s better to take yours from home.
8. Take power bank or small extension to charge your phone. There are only two places where U can charge your phone, and it’s less then a people of course, to economy time for waiting U can take it from home.
9. If U can it’s better to order the bed in small room - it’s the second after big one with a door outside from the street. It will be definitely not so cold.
10. A lot of people were sleeping in the sleeping bags, it’s a good idea, it’s very very cold at night, no heating, like this U will sleep better.
11. Don’t forget the foot patch. They don’t sell it in Refugee.
12. About cost - refugee night sleep costs 18 euro, tea 2 euro, one apple 1 euro, chocolate 5, chicken soup 7,50. It’s very tasty Greek salad.
13. And the last - take something like sport gloves. When U climb, U scratch your hands, so U can take some gloves with open fingers, not hot, just for climbing. And don’t take a lot of warm close, it was a mistake number one of a lot of tourists, when U climb, U are soooo hot, that all your clothes is inside the bag and U have just extra weight.
I hope my review was helpful. I wish U to enjoy climbing to the one of the most beautiful mountains - mountain of Gods. I didn’t find them)))

I would highly recommend to stay away from Refuge C (Cristos Kakkalos), in Mount Olympus area. Their team showed zero flexibility, and once you pay them is order to make your reservation (it is mandatory to pay in advance), they will never return your money, even if you were forced to cancel due to a family death or war.
Their customer service was one of the worst I have experienced in my life. The other Refuges were actually quite fair.
I would be very careful before choosing Refuge C, would probably be much better to choose other Refuges in Mount Olympus.

It's worth the walk! It's magical now, like you're in a fairy tale! We will definitely go again! Difficult for small children though.

My cell phone for family members climbed the top of Mount Olympus and felt like Greek gods.
This is a two day process. The first day you Heike difficult for or five hours to a refuge about 2100 m. The next day you’ll wake up at sunrise and take the rest of the way to the top of Mount Olympus This takes about three or four hours.. Then you just sent about 7 hours The base. You have to be moderately good physical shape. If you are an avid climber but I’m sure I could do this faster. I am not. So it took me longer :-). It is very well worth it.

To be honest and contrary to many other reviews, we were not that prepared for all that happened but I’ll still share our experiences here :) I literally called the Refuge A 9 am on the morning of our trip, and luckily, got the last two beds there. We hiked quite a lot back home, but didn’t bring hiking poles or proper backpacks for this trip, my boyfriend had good hiking boots and I was only in trainers because I didn’t really expect to go on a proper hike here… anyway, we drove from Thessaloniki to Prionia and started the ascend at around 3 pm. It’s a forestry hike with well paved path/stairs, although it’s also very steep - almost 1000 m up in about 4.5 km, only two short sections of flat path, otherwise continuous ascending! That being said, we still managed to finish this section in just under 2.5 h. We had a pleasant stay at the refuge that night, the food was tasty and the room (with ~20 people) clean. Just be aware that they don’t have hot water there so bring some wet wipes if you care. They also offered bed sheets for rent at €3.
The next day the lights were on at 6 am although we actually planned to sleep until 7, never mind. We watched a beautiful sunrise with breakfast and set off for Skala at 7:30 am. The climate was perfect for hiking, but the route was even tougher than the previous day even though the elevation was less. The last 300 m or so up was on the back of a steep hill with loose rocks, but I found it ok to go up with trainers. Again, in the end we finished this section in 2.5 h.
Initially we only planned to reach Skala because it sounds so scary in every travel blog to climb Mytikas and we have 0 experience in climbing. However, when the summit is so close and almost everyone at Skala went on to Mytikas (including an 73-year-old gentleman we met on the way), we couldn’t resist giving it a try! It’s true that it’s difficult, from time to time dangerous, but it’s not impossible! The important thing is not to go alone if you’re not confident, and never do it if the weather is bad. By observing other people you can also figure out the most suitable route and methods for yourself - there were loads of markings but the “path” was not obvious at all… eventually we made it to the summit and so did the old man! It was all worth it :D! The way back felt somehow less scary because I knew what to expect. So the return trip to Mytikas from Skala took another 2 h or so. Without poles, the way down the long slope was a bit tricky for me in trainers, so it took like 2 h back to refuge A, where we ate another bowls of spaghetti and relaxed a bit there :p
In the end we were back to Prionia at around 5:30 pm. Going back to the seaside while watching the mount Olympus, we still couldn’t believe we made it to the top!
Looking back, there are a few things that would have made the hike more comfortable:
1. Hiking poles! And proper boots in my case :D
2. We could have packed less water - each section we drank ~1L per person, and we could refill at refuge A. So it was not necessary to carry 2L per person all the time (we went in late September, it could be very different in summer).
3. We could’ve also packed less food, because the food at the refuge was very delicious and during the climb it was too intense to eat anything anyway…
4. I’m not sure if I would have needed the helmet, I didn’t wear any, but in any case it’s possible to rent it from the refuge for €5.
Hope our story helps!

Wij deden de trail van Prionia naar het Monastery. In 2 uur waren we weer boven.

Mt Olympus from Athens?
Apologies if this has already been covered in this forum but my husband wants to go to Mt Olympus from our base in Athens...he just wants to see it, not hike it, and happy to do it in a day. Is that feasible? train? driver? any suggestions appreciated.

hi there!
me and my friend are planning to hike the olympus next week, for two days, and i would love some advice :)
our plan is to start early morning, and go all the way to refuge c, and go down the next day.
since im not a pro climber, and not a huge fan of scary climbs, im not aiming to get to the highest peak, but i was wondering how difficult/scary is it to get to skala?
and also, is it better to get there on the first day thrue E4 from prionia, or taking the rout from gortsia to refuge c on the first day, and on the second day going from refuge c to skala and back down?
which one is easier? and is it possible to skip skala all together, and go from refuge c to prionia?
thanks a lot!

Hi. I love to hike and I'd like to hike in Olympus in March, but it seems that there's no company offering hiking tour in the season.
Could anybody recommend me any track for winter hike, and how to get there from Thessaloniki?
Thank you. :)
Skrevet 18. februar 2020
Hi there! First of all you have to check the public transport from Thessaloniki to litochoro village ( public buses ). Then the village of litochoro is common starting point for several routes. The most famous is enipeas river route which is moving in low altitude althought is quite beautiful! Another one goes up to ' Stavros' mountain hut from litochoro where you could have dinner and overnight. Contact me if you wish anything

Would it be possible to do a day walk from Prionia to Spilios Agapitos Refuge and back down within a day during early January? We understand that mountaineering experience and equipment are needed for the portions of the E4 trail beyond the refuge, but we are not experienced mountaineers, so we are curious to know if the refuge can be safely reached with appropriate hiking shoes and poles in good winter weather. Thank you.
Skrevet 1. desember 2019
And forgot to mention that January is the hardest weather in Greek winter and in Greek Macedonia region. If you are really deciding to do it. Find someone from Katerini hiking society to help you find the way. Never do it alone or with your family and company. You need someone to know the mountain. You can ask in litochoro town for rangers who you pay to help you and accompanied you.
Don't try it alone or even alone with friends. It is scary not to know what to expect.

My family (young adults) and I will be there in mid-March 2019.
Can the ascent be done without serious climbing gear?
In addition, is it worth going half way up the mountain and how much time would that take.
Also, what is the best entry point to the moutain hike starting point, Litochoro in the east or park entrance far to the west
along highway near Karya? What is the easiesnt access point.
Thank you for taking the time to address these questions.
Skrevet 19. februar 2019
No it was covered in ice and snow. I understand the last part at the top is very hard and steep, I wouldn’t take young children up.

I am taking my family to to hike Mt Olympus next summer. My wife and youngest son (7 years old) do not want to climb to the summit. However, my 12 year old son and I want to reach the top. How far up the mountain can my wife and youngest son safely hike? Skolas maybe? Refuge A? My wife is a little paranoid and doesn't like to be alone for long periods, so I'd like them to stay with me as long as possible before it is unsafe for them to continue.
I'd love any suggestions. Thanks!
Skrevet 22. november 2018
Hi , I would be careful about a 12 year old going up to attempt Mytikas. It is a sustained grade 3 scramble. I doubt a seven year old can get to Refuge A - it may be too arduous. This trip is really suited to experienced trekkers and the summit requires rock scrambling experience. A lot of reviews frankly are written by people who do not have any real experience but are unaware of the fact. This place including the refuges, which are rough with no running water etc are not for families nor for young kids. I would re-think your plans. Many people go there like it's an outing and get a big surprise. You and your boy may be able to do Skolas over 2.5 days up and down, 2 nights at Refuge A...

I'm planning to climb Mt Olympus (highest peak) end of november this year. We want to do it within 2 days:
- D1: start from Thessaloniki - drive to trailhead, climb to shelter/hut
- D2: summit, return to car, drive to Meteora
My questions:
- In what conditions would I find the mountain around that time?
- Is it still possible to hike to the summit then or would it require crampons/rope/climbing gear?
- Or would it only be possible on ski's? (my partner is not an experienced skier...)
- Which route would be advisable?
- We would climb during a weekend, maybe a hut will be open somewhere? Otherwise what huts to best stay in?
Thank you all in advance!
Skrevet 8. oktober 2018
I was there yesterday . I hired a guide a gentleman called Akis who was fantastic. You would need crampons and winter clothing ice axe .etc. . You can rent these through Akis. Such a lovely snow covered paradise. .

Hi, I am planning a trip to Greece in early/mid Oct. Tentative plan is
- arrive Thessaloniki
- Thessaloniki - Litochoro (to climb Mt Olympus)
- Litochoro - Meteora
- Meteora - Vikos Gorge
- Vikos Gorge - Delphi & southwards (rent a car in Vikos or nearby)
I could not find much information on transportation on route "Litochoro-Meteora - Vikos Gorge", and renting a car in Vikos Gorge area.
Appreciate any information/advice on the transport &/or car rental along this route.

Hi, I got the train from Thessaloniki to Litohoro . It was very cheap . The taxi to Litohoro was 8 euros the train I think was 12 euros . Cheaper than car rental
