A boat ride
jul. 2021
What a beautiful river scenery. I only took the boad ride from Ahkun tupa to Kultahamina but it was really nice. The trails go along the river Lemmenjoki but I wanted to enjoy the river.
On our way to the Kultahamina the boat stayed briefly in the Ravadasköngäs water fall so we were able to take photos; what a wonderful sight.
Some parts of the river were so shallow (due the dry summer) that the boat was only able to pass them empty, so all passengers needed to walk a short way.
The sights from the boat are great and it was really worth it.

Ruskan aikaan tuli patikoitua hienoissa maisemissa.

Nature Trail - the Hike for Non-Hikers
okt. 2019
Follow the orange dots around a 4.5km Nature Trail. Signs tell of the Saami people and their relationship with reindeer. Scenery was beautiful. The path was ok, plenty of tree roots and rocks and only a few small climbs. Lovely autumn colours.

Das ist ein Erlebnis fürs Leben
okt. 2017 • Alene

The largest national park in Finland: guided tours and solo hiking
jun. 2018 • Familie
We took an overnight train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, then a bus from Rovaniemi to Inari and after that a taxi cab (70-80 euros) from Inari to the village of Lemmenjoki. We booked the taxi the day before.

The best entrance to the national park is from the village of Lemmenjoki. The village is also known as Njurgalahti (Njurgulahti). It is an extremely small village. There aren't any shops there, only some rentable cottages (holiday houses), two small cafeteria-restaurants and a camping site.

Lemmenjoki National Park is very large, almost 3,000 square kilometers. With neighboring wilderness areas in Finland and Norway there is an area over 10,000 square kilometers without any roads there. So this isn't a very good place if you haven't any hiking experience. However, you can book guided boat tours from the village of Lemmenjoki to the national park. In summer they have boat scheduled boat trips and private tours.

There are three different circular hiking trails from the parking place: a nature path called Luontopolku (4-5 kilometers), a scenery path named Joenkielisen kierros (16 kilometers) and a long hiking trail named Kultakierros (also known as Kultamaiden polku, almost 60 kilometers). All these are marked well: the nature path with green paint spots on tree trunks, other trails with orange spots and signposts). Mountain biking is allowed on these marked routes but these paths aren't very suitable for mountain biking. You have to be very experienced and practiced if you are going to bike.

We hiked the scenery path Joenkielisen kierros which goes on the top of Joenkielinen Fell (535 meters above the sea-level). It is best to hike it clockwise because so you see the beautiful scenery best. Good hiking shoes are needed but you don't need rubber boots (wellingtons) if the weather is dry. This path takes at least five hours. There is also a good campfire site named Juurakkojoki (also known as Juurakko-ojan latva) on the route. Take your own sausages and matches with you (and also some toilet paper if you want to visit the outhouse). Wood for a campfire is available on the campfire site but you aren't allowed to set fire to the campfire if there is a forest fire warning at the moment. Joenkielisen kierros offers extremely good views. I highly recommend it.

We hiked Kultakierros (60 kilometers), too, and we also made some extra loops outside those marked paths. It took 4 days and nights. We had our own tent with us but there are also open huts on the trail. Some of those huts are open for all without any cost but some of them are rentable huts. Remember to take a good map, food and toilet paper with you because there aren't any services in the national park, except huts, outhouses and campfire sites. You can cross the river Lemmenjoki at Searitkniva or Härkäkoski with a self-service ferryboat.

Kultakierros means Gold Tour. Lemmenjoki National Park has been the historical gold rush site in Finland. There are still some gold diggers in Lemmenjoki National Park. You see both historical gold panning sites and new gold mining sites on the route. However, the best part of this trail is the beautiful nature: fells (Lappish mountains), ridges (eskers), ponds, rivers, waterfalls, pine forests etc. There is an ATV path between Morgamojan Kultala and Kultahamina but other paths are very beautiful and natural. Ravadasköngäs Waterfall is the most important sight on the route.

It is also allowed to hike elsewhere than on marked trails (except near Ravadasköngäs), i.e. on unmarked trails or without any trails. We hiked an unmarked path which goes from Ravadasnjarga (also known as Ravadasniemi) to the wilderness lake named Ravadasjärvi (N.B. this isn't the same as the campfire site named Ravadasjärvi). The path is clearly visible and it is very easy to follow it even without a map. The path follows River Ravadasjoki to the north of Ravadasnjarga. On the way we climbed onto two fells: Hanhipäät (479 meters above the sea-level) and the smaller Peuranampumapää. We set up our tent on the lake shore of Lake Ravadasjärvi.

From Kultahamina we climbed onto the highest fell of Lemmenjoki National Park. It is named Morgam-Viibus and it is about 600 meters above the sea-level. This was the most difficult thing on our hike because nowadays there isn't any bridge or ferryboat over River Lemmenjoki at that point. Lemmenjoki is quite deep in many places and the flow is quite strong. So it wasn't very easy to find a site where to wade over Lemmenjoki. Finally we found a suitable place. We followed a riverside path from the campfire site of Kultahamina to the south-west, upstream of the old bridge, almost to the reindeer fence. After crossing the river there is an old but easily visible path onto the fell. First the path goes on an extremely deep slope but after that it is easier and finally you see the wonderful view on the top of the fell. I recommend that you have a map with you. And be very careful. Crossing the river may be very dangerous if you don't know what to do. Take plenty of time because both crossing the river and following the deep path take very much time.

So far Lemmenjoki National Park has been my best experience of the year 2018. If you aren't going to do any long hike, choose at least a day-trip in Lemmmenjoki National Park, either guided or on your own. This is the paradise for everyone who is interested in nature and beautiful views.

Bellissima nature trail
des. 2017 • Par
