Parcours pleins de belles surprises et une vue magnifique.
Prévoir de bonnes chaussures et pourquoi pas un petit linge une fois la traversée de la rivière passée.
Superbes souvenirs! Et la météo était avec nous.

The most difficult but rewarding hike of our Iceland trip! It took about just under 4 hours to do the entire hike. When we parked we followed the signs pointing to Glymur and started the hike! It took us the way where you go thru a cave and cross a water with a log with ropes. The hike is hard and you are in the wilderness with lots of steep climbing but it is worth it. When you finally get to the waterfall, it’s mind blowing how high up you are. You cannot even see the bottom. Out of this world views. Once you are at the top, you have the choice to go back down the way you came up, or cross a swallow river at the top. We chose to cross the River and go down the other way. That way down was steep and rocky. Glad we went up the other way.
Tips:
Wear good solid hiking boots and hiking clothes.
Pack water and snacks. We ate lunch when we got to the top as we were tired.
Prepare for this being a long hike timing wise. This is no quick and easy hike.
We are so glad we did this hike. It’s hard but the views you get it out of this world and really makes you realize how beautiful Icelands nature is!

Great views from various points in the loop hike. This was difficult for me. Some ropes to help you up at a few parts. And a log (with a rope on one side) that you have to walk across. Then you need to cross the river/stream. We took flip flops but that didn’t help me. I slipped and fell into it and got wet which was not pleasant at all. So the rest of the hike down I had to walk with wet butt, legs, and part of my one side. The walk down was MUCH easier than going up! It’s gorgeous at the top and other places – absolutely fantastic views if you can handle the technical pieces. So, I'd rate it excellent for views.

Second time doing this hike and remains an all time favorite! Was a spontaneous layover trip so we didn’t have the best gear but did fine in regular tennis shoes and roughed the river crossings barefoot. Painful but so worth it! The log crossing looks more intimidating than it is once you’re on it, don’t turn around as we saw several groups do!

This was the coolest hike I've ever done. The views are incredible and well worth the steepness of the uphill parts. It took us about three and a half hours, so plan accordingly with water and snacks. We did the hike counter-clockwise, which is what most of the guides recommended. It was the correct move, I think- the views were better, and the parts of the trail that we did uphill would have been unpleasant to descend (and vice versa) had we hiked the trail clockwise. Also, and I cannot stress this enough, bring water shoes AND waterproof hiking shoes. There are multiple points where you'll need to cross small streams, and waterproof shoes are a must. Also, there are two points where you need to cross a river. You can do it barefoot, but it's unpleasant- the rocks are hard and slippery, and the water is really cold. Bringing water shoes and a small towel adds a bit of extra weight in your backpack with a big benefit. There are ropes in sections, but they're more for extra help if you need it; it's not like you're rappelling up or down a cliff. Not a great hike for people afraid of heights, but definitely worth pushing yourself for.

This trek was an unforgettable experience. You can have long walk here in the company of unforgettable and breathtaking views. The waterfall itself is amazing. Crossing the ford of the rushing icy river on the trail turned out to be an additional unforgettable attraction.

We will be traveling to Iceland April 15th-23rd and was wondering if the log will be in place at this point? It sounds like if the log isn’t there then it’s a really tough hike so not sure if I’d want to do it without the log. Is there a website or anything to find out while we are there without having to drive there and physically look? TIA

Is there a way to know what is the north trail and what is the south trail? I would like to avoid the river crossing. Thanks.

It's a lot of fun and very easy to cross the river - do not avoid it - See my attched pix's how it's easy & fun
The north trail is used for returning
IMO the most stunning views are from the south trail!
Also, if you short in time you better hike the south up and return (and cross the river twice :) we did enjoyed it twice
Though, if you still want to hike the north trail, then, after passing the entry gate look for left turn trail sign (I do remember that they have a trails map on the entrance)
Enjoy

When does the log across the river normally get placed? I will be in Iceland at the end of May (arriving 29th) and hoping to do this hike!

We were there at the beginning of May and it was supposed to be already across, but winter was still hanging on so they chose to delay it. I would expect that the log will be across by now but if it is still snowing there, then it may not. There don't have a specific time when they place it across the river because the weather in Iceland is rather unpredictable... Make sure to bring sturdy hiking boots, an extra pair of socks, and a bottle of water... and your camera
I’m looking to do this hike in late April, is it a marked trail? Also far is the walk across the river?

Hi Joe,
From the parking lot it'll take you about 1,5 hour to get there, so 3 hours forth and back.
The signs are not that clear but the track is visible. Do follow the track getting up and not down to the river, for they removed the tree trunk that crossed the river.

This is okay to do in the winter? We will be there next week and it looks BEAUTIFUL. Thanks so much.

They remove the log crossing in the winter.
I'm not going to say it's impossible. It will be freezing and treacherous, and that's even with the log crossing. Without the log, you are looking at a climb up the west side of the falls, across the river, and down to the usual viewing points. Each portion will present a different challenge. Then you have to do it all over again. It is certainly a less dramatic introduction to the falls.
With the log present, I wouldn't hesitate to go because I could skip the river crossing. Without the log, well, that would require a lot of self-motivation.

Is this hike possible late January?
ElNinoDorado
New York City, NY568 bidrag
The log won't be there, and the alternative route to the upper river crossing would be rather treacherous and frigid, to which you would have to cross twice to get back down. I won't say it's impossible, but you better have some cold weather gear and a tolerance for freezing water because you will have to remove your shoes and socks to get across.

How far from the Capital ( Reykjavick) is this hike by car? Does the hike take two and half hours one way or roundtrip? Is the light for pictures better in the morning or afternoon?
Thanks

By car, it's about an hour drive. I think that one could totally do the whole hike in a couple of hours total time. It really depends on how fast you walk and how long it takes you to cross the water. It also depends on whether you do it in the winter or summer. I think total time for us was around three hours in winter snow and having to cross the water without the log. Not sure about the light for pictures. We got to the top around noon and the lighting was good. Hope this helps. Enjoy!

Unfortunately not. It is back in a gravel a few km the road. Also, the main route is now through the tunnel to miss this stretch of highway to save miles... So not certain about traffic for hitching.
