If you like this sort of thing or have an interest in local history, don't hesitate to visit. A little tip, either read or listen to the book called Combat Crew by John Comer first. It will really help to set the scene and open your eyes to the bravery and sacrifice that was made here.

This is a wonderful, unstuffy little museum which tells the human stories behind the wartime heavy bomber base, for both the RAF and USAF periods. Beautifully set out, it explains the key raids and highlights the bravery of those servicemen and the scale of the tragedies they suffered, with supporting aero relics and other period exhibits.

The volunteer staff are passionate, approachable and knowledgeable and have done a first rate job to bring this to the public. Friendly cafe offering too. The best of Britain - it's all free but do consider a donation to keep this going and ensure the educational work continues and these heroic men are never forgotten.

We visited this museum with our two boys (10 and 8). A really fascinating place to spend an hour or two. The volunteers were very welcoming, friendly and informative. Nice tea and cakes too! It's a pity so much of the airfield and its buildings are no longer around, but what's left is still well worth a visit as well as being a very humbling experience.

Visited this small museum today which is a private collection of wartime memorabilia from Essex's only long-term heavy bomber base. The entrance houses a very moving memorial and there is free admission [donations welcome] to view the collection. A small car park is on site and the museum is open on the second Sunday of each month between April and September from 11-5 p.m.
Although we live fairly local to the museum, this was our first visit. We were truly impressed by the sheer volume of information, the displays and the enthusiasm of the volunteers who were on hand to answer any questions. So glad to have found this place and 'purchased' a book on the history of the site. If you like military history, this is well worth spending an hour or so to have a look round.
