Stayed in Valetta nad went walkabout for the afternoon, found this lovely little haven by the city wall, peaceful place to sit relax and do some people watching, look over the walls for views of the surrounding countryside and harbour.

This is a wonderful place to go to not only get away from the hustle and bustle of the city but to also enjoy the wonderful views. From here, you can see the fort manual clearly and see how big the bastions are. I was amazed by how thick the walls are.

Found by mistake while walking and rested for 1/2 hr, peaceful with good views when you look over the walls.

This is probably one of Valletta’s least visited gardens; it’s generally overlooked for the Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens with their fine views over the Grand Harbour. It’s a public garden and occupies a commanding spot on top of St. John’s and St. Michael’s Bastions on the west side of Valletta.
Hastings Gardens were built by the architect Adriano DeVina and is named after Francis Edward Rawdon-Hastings. He was a former governor of India, who following his resignation ended up serving as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Malta from 1824 to 1826.
It’s a pretty spot, though you won’t find huge expanses of lawn and manicured garden beds full of seasonal colour. Being on top of the bastions you’ll find lots of stone, and thick stone walls, but there are some garden beds and a decent amount of shade trees, so It’s a quiet space in which to sit awhile and enjoy the surroundings. There is plenty of seating for this.
Because it sits high up, the views are lovely, and you’ll get a different perspective of the city of Valletta and its position in the harbour. On one side you can enjoy the views of the Marsamxett Harbour, Msida, Sliema and the huge fort on Manoel Island. At the other end of the garden you can admire the beautifully restored Triton Fountain located just on the periphery of the City Gate of Valletta, and Floriana. It is worth visiting the gardens just for these views.
When you enter the gardens you’ll notice a curious monument that looks a bit like a small Greek temple. It was built to honour Lord Hastings who is buried in the garden. But it’s not the only monument in the garden. There is a khachkar, a monument that was unveiled at Hastings Gardens by the Armenian community in Malta on 22 December 2009. It was specifically made in Armenia and delivered to Malta. The sign next to the khachkar says the following: “In token of friendship between the Maltese and Armenian people. Armenia thanks Malta for its support to Armenians who found refuge on this island in the tragic years of 1375 and 1915.” You will also see the
Sette Giugno Monument, and a Vaclav Havel Memorial! Vaclav Havel was a Czech statesman, writer and former dissident. He served as the last President of Czechoslovakia from 1989 until the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1992 and then as the first President of the Czech Republic from 1993 to 2003. There’s also a vacant plinth by one of the gates. On it once stood 70-foot statue of Sir Frederick Cavendish Ponsonby who succeeded Lord Hastings as Governor of Malta until 1835. The statue was unfortunately destroyed by lighting in January 1864.
Even though the Hasting Garden is relatively small it is still very attractive and charming, providing opportunities to take some lovely scenic photographs of the landscape and the views.
It’s easy to get to. There are number of gates you can access it from. We entered via the gate on Triq Il-Papa Piju V. If you are entering Valletta through the City Gate, take the first left, walk up the stairs and you will get directly to the garden.

Nulla di eccezionale a parte una bella visuale sul porto,forse anche un po trascurati.Fateci solo una toccata e fuga,altrimenti fa lo stesso La Valletta ha di meglio da offrire.

For such a fortified city Valletta has a number of gardens and this one looks over the ditch, the triton fountain and marmasxett harbour. There are a few seats to sit and watch the world go by. A range of plants and flowers too.

We were too early for the seasonal planting, so a bit bland - but still worth a visit. There are some good views of the city fortifications and Marsamxett Harbour. The little cafe is nice with friendly staff and a surprising range of snacks.
