In the heart of Echternach is this amazing church with the crypt below. Lots of history here with helpful staff in the gift shop too.

St. William's Basilica is connected to Echternach Abbey, which was founded in 698 by St. John the Baptist. Willibrord and dissolved in 1797. The basilica dates from the 11th and 13th centuries. After heavy damage during the Ardennes offensive, it was rebuilt in neo-Romanesque style. The crypt dates from Carolingian times and has valuable frescoes from this era. Here stands the richly decorated marble sarcophagus with the remains of Saint Willibrord and also rises the St. Willibrord. Willibrord-bron. In the church there is also a Documentation Center on the Jumping Procession.

The basilica and the abbey are part of a tour of Echternach. Should definitely have seen. The park is also quite nice to stroll through (abandoned mini golf course, Rococo Pavilion). Next to it is a school, or the school is part of the abbey, through which you have to walk if you want to get to the park

We designed our research trip on Pilgrimage Churhes (husband's book) to include Bruges, Belgium, and Echternacht. We were not disappointed with either! The Bruges Procession happened in perfect weather with over a thousand costumed locals and animals (2 hours of pageantry!), but even in the drizzling rain in Echternacht, the annual centuries-old Procession of the Holy Blood proceeded with thousands of 'pilgrims' and bands playing a specific polka, and participants holding while hankies and doing a simple shuffle/hop. The city is quaint, welcoming, the food everywhere was delicious and oh, the ice cream treats and pasteies were fabulous. We stayed at La Petite Poete, which is owned by a young couple and has truly excellent food (2 of the freshest homemade soups we've ever enjoyed). The Cathedral's priest is really lovely, and the cathedral museum houses one of the finest illustrated manuscript collections anywhere!

Just packed with historical relevance. Beautiful on both the interior and exterior with a small museum attached inside. Information and statute of SAINT WILLIBRORD 658 - 739 are worthwhile. Damaged during the French Revolution and the Battle of the Bulge. Fascinating relics and inspirational altars.
What is a Basilica? A basilica is simply an important church building designated by the Pope because it carries special spiritual, historical, and/or architectural significance. Basilica is the highest permanent designation for a church building, and once a church is named a basilica, it cannot lose its basilica status. A cathedral on the other hand is the home church for the bishop or archbishop of a Catholic diocese. It takes its name from the bishop’s chair, called a cathedra in Latin, which traditionally represents the seat of power and authority of the leader of the diocese. A basilica may or may not also be the cathedral of the diocese; it depends on the place of the chair of the Bishop or Archbishop.

The history of this Basilica is very interesting. Take the time to go an visit. You'll be the only ones there, but that's what makes it fun and interesting. Make sure you don't miss the crypt. It's all part of the history and story.

Saint Willibrord Basilica is part of the vast Abbey of Echternach complex. It is also the major tourist attraction in Echternach, Luxembourg's eastern end city. While the basilica itself is not remarkable, the crypt downstairs is the highlight. Seeing the coffin of Willibrord and the underground praying place is an interesting visitor experience. Free admission.

The church is considered to be the most important religious building in Luxembourg as the burial place of its most important saint. We were fortunate to be in Echternach on the day of the dancing procession and festival as the church forms the centrepiece of celebrations. Numerous bands end their procession inside the church with dancers passing by the crypt of St Willibrord. It was certainly spectacular.
The building itself is relatively plain inside. The stained-glass windows are a fairly recent addition as the church was completely renovated after suffering severe distress during the second World War.
There are two main features of interest in the church, the first is the crypt, a lovely vaulted area which is built under the alter and secondly a new side wing which features information on the annual dancing celebration plus a small gift shop.
