If you are interested in visiting and knowing the works of the artists of the Vienna secession (1885-1918) this is a must-see place.
The building is easily accessible from the "Ring". It has only two rooms: one for temporary exhibitions and one fixed with the Frizo de Bethoveen. Take a few minutes to see the building from the outside and the remarkable design details, and then visit the Klimpt murals which are very remarkable. With the entrance you can take some hearing aids to, listen to Bethoveen's 9th, which was the reason for the space and the "spiritual" leader of the movement. See the, excellent model that indicates how the space was intended.

The location of this museum takes its name from the movement of the same name that enlightened Vienna in the late 1800s. Particular room where you can admire one of Klimt's masterpieces (Beethoven's ninth symphony).

The visit to this building was on our wish list for quite a long time!
After seeing the beautiful exterior with the iconic sphere, we were disappointed with what we found inside. The biggest, central exhibition hall was full of unimpressive lava lamps. Upstairs, we also saw two exhibitions by contemporary authors, but we didn't like them.
For us, the most interesting part of our visit was downstairs, where we learned about the history of the building. The Beethoven Frieze, painted by Gustav Klimt in 1902 is indeed monumental but we are not fond of some grotesque details. We also saw a little exhibition of items also prepared for the 75th anniversary of Beethoven's death!
Because of the exterior, the building deserves a 'Very Good' mark.

The Secession building is a symbol for PAINTING! It is a secession from the bosom of the conservative class of painters. Beethoven's Frieze, Klimt's work, It is the first, the most important Art nouveau work in Vienna. A brochure is available for the space that analyzes the entire project in detail. It was shocking! Unique! Do not miss it!

As we walked up to the Secession Building, I was amazed at the stunning art and design in front of me! The west wall is filled with images of trees and leaves and flowers and owls, among a variety of designs and symbols. We walked to the front of the building which is even more impressive! German words are written in gold over the doorway (translated: "To every age its art, to every art its freedom"). And three women figurals representing painting, sculpture, and architecture. And above sits a huge org of gold leaves (I had to go across the street to see the orb in its entirety and take a photo of the building.) We entered the building and paid the admission fee to see Klimt's Beethoven Frieze. If you haven't read up on this work and its meaning, it will puzzle and perhaps even disappoint you. The Frieze is located downstairs; lack of prominent signage was a problem. Once in the gallery room, you have to look up since the frieze is painted at the top of two long walls and at the far end of the room. Depicting scenes inspired by Beethoven's 9th Symphony, there are parts of the frieze that are undeniably Klimt and parts that seem confusing (even to those familiar with the Beethoven). Take your time to walk around the room to see each segment of the frieze...and enjoy some truly beautiful work within!!

This sober white facade with a sphere made of 3,000 golden wrought iron leaves is part of art history as a representative of the "Jugendstil" movement, contemporary with English Modern Style and French Art Nouveau. Klimt made the sketches and Joseph Maria Olbrich, a student of Otto Wagner, erected this cathedral of art nouveau, much criticized in his time. We can read on the pediment "To each era its art, to art its freedom". The basement houses the famous "Beethoven Frieze" created by Gustav Klimt on the theme of the 9th symphony in homage to the great composer.

Beautiful building. The admission is cheaper if an installation is in progress. That was the case for me, so I paid 7 EUR rather than 12, which was all good because I was solely interested in the Beethoven Frieze anyway.

I agree with other reviews that 12 is a bit on the high side. But worth it if you can net a cheaper admission fee like in my case! Finally, if you have the Vienna City Card, you can rent the audio guide for free. They will want to keep your ID card as a deposit, so be aware of that. (I got by with an Amex credit card because Secession doesn’t take Amex anyway.)

A beautiful building. Inside, the Beethoven Frieze awaits you. While you enjoy this work of art, you can listen to the 4th movement of Beethoven's ninth symphony on headphones.

There are two other special exhibitions by modern artists in the building, but the highlight is clearly Klimt's Beethoven Frieze.

The disabled entrance is located on the side of the building (on the left when facing the entrance). The platform that will take you to the museum entrance is operated by museum employees. Contact via intercom is difficult. It is best to go with an able-bodied person who will inform the staff about your arrival. A person in a wheelchair can move freely inside the museum. There is a toilet for disabled people in the museum. Tickets can be purchased on site.

Why didn’t I read these reviews and save myself 12 euro?! I thought the Secession Museum would have information about the Secession and works from the great artists of that time- that is the excellent Leopold Museum. The Secession does have Klimt’s Beethoven Frieze and you can put on earphones and listen to part of Beethovens 9 th while looking at the frieze and reading an explanation of its symbolism. I enjoyed that and it took 10 minutes. In addition there were two horrendous contemporary works which took one misspent minute each so not sure how this museum
Could take 2-3 hours as stated in the description on Trip Advisor. The exterior of the building is quite striking and worth seeing especially if you are across the street at the Naschmarkt. If you want to see the Beethoven Frieze and its worth 12 euro to you( 10 for seniors), then go inside the Secession Building but otherwise admire the building from the outside and go see the Klimt works at the Upper Belvedere Palace and the Leopold Museum both worth the price of admission.
