This was my best experience during my 2-day stay in Vienna, and that’s saying a lot, with all the amazing attractions here. The Beethoven Museum was located outside the city centre and given that I had only 2 days in this city, I almost gave it a miss. But I am glad I travelled some 40-minutes to the location. That part of town at Probusgasse still had some well-conserved houses and even an old church. You can absolutely imagine Beethoven mingling in the community here in the summer of 1802.

In the modern-day layout, the museum is divided into 6 galleries. It is not important if the artifacts were replica or originals, but we get to see Beethoven’s handwritten manuscript and his handwriting in his letters. There’s a replica of a 5-pedal piano used in those times that have been modified to help Beethoven’s struggles with his hearing. To me, what was absolutely poignant was the despair documented in his unsent letters to his brothers over his progressive illness. Although I heard the translated version, it was enough to bring a lump to my throat.

I went there in June 2024 when there was an open house, so there was no entry charge and the museum was open from 10am to 5pm. Do note that normally, they are closed between 1-2 pm. No doubt I am seeing this through the lens of a student of classical music but I think anyone who admires greatness and fortitude in the face of adversity will appreciate the story of Beethoven.

Fascinating all around. The main reason I travelled to Vienna was classical music, so this visit made sense. I bought the combined ticket to access all 6 (FYI Mozarthaus is not included). I went there upon opening and spent 3 hours. The six rooms have done an outstanding job of telling Beethoven’s life in Vienna. Also be sure to spend some time in the garden. Good place for a break and quiet reflection.

We spent a peaceful and relaxing hour exploring the Beethoven museum. I didn't know much about Beethoven before coming here - only that he was one of the world's greatest composers.

There are 6 rooms to explore and a courtyard where you arrive into. The garden is currently closed. An hour here is plenty, and I recommend starting your day here before it gets busy.

It's amazing to be in the same rooms that Beethoven once stayed in. To see his piano, sheets of music, and personal effects is very moving. There's so much to explore - even his death mask and a lock of hair are on display.

The museum is quite far from the city centre but you can get the metro to Heiligenstadt station and then it's a 15 minute walk to the museum. The area around the museum is tranquil where you feel like you're in a remote village.

It's actually a good thing to be away from the centre for a little bit. The museum wasn't crowded and if you arrive in the morning, you can take some really nice photos.

Luckily we visited the museum on the first Sunday of February which meant we could enter for free. Most museums are free on the first Sunday of every month in Vienna so it's worth organising your trip around this time.

It's worth making time to visit the museum, it gives you some time to reflect.

Out of the way from the main tourist area, which in some ways is a good thing - not as crowded. The neighbourhood seems like a well-to-do upper-middle class area, and is peaceful.

As other reviews states, this has elements of interaction. I particularly liked the hearing loss simulation that give you an idea of what Beethoven's hearing was like as it declined.

I was a little annoyed that the backyard area was closed off. It was open when we arrived, but closed by the time I was ready to see it. I suppose that was because of the rain.

If you have an interest in the great, classical composers, then you should make the trip.

Sehr liebevoll gemacht.

I rarely give 5 stars, usually 4 if it’s really good. But this is really really good. Personally I am an admirer of Beethoven and I came here to know more about his life. I will not spoil too much about what I learnt about his personal life, so you can come and see for yourself. The museum has 6 sections, each section is a room. There are very interactive exhibitions inside, some very creative indeed. Great for kids. The museum gave detailed view into different perspectives of Beethoven’s life: health condition, inspiration for his works, evolution of some of his work (particularly ‘Tempest’ piano sonata, which was completed in that very house). For casual travellers, around 30 minutes would be enough to finish the museum. For more serious visitors, you can spend here the whole day, studying every exhibit, listening to his works through the speakers inside the rooms. I spent 3 hours there and I was not bored. Listening to the different drafts of Tempest while reading about Tempest is a special experience not every museum about composers can offer. There is a discount if you bought the Vienna City Card, remember to ask the staff.

Visited on a cold day in late February 2023. It's outside of the city center but easily accessible by public transportation. Small museum in Beethoven's residence (a former bakery). This small museum has a few interactive activities throughout five rooms. Worth visiting for anyone involved in music history and education.

The museum is quite small but well laid out.
There were only one other couple visiting at he same time so we had plenty of time to absorb to amazing collection and absorb parts of this great man’s life.
Well worth the trip on the train from Vienna Karlsplatz

We went on a Saturday morning; Barely anyone there. They say they get school groups during the morning weekdays.. It was extremely informative and very hands on for our 7 year old. (Being a small museum). She could listen and appreciate the music etc.
We drove since it is in the outskirts. If you have an hour or so, I highly recommend.
