I went there in 2020 but writing a review in time slipped my mind. I had some mixed feelings about this place. While I appreciated getting to know more about Sami culture in a presentation in a tent, I had gone through much of a shock afterwards. As part of the visit, a warm lunch was included, with two menu options: either some veg ragu or... reindeer ragu. Shortly before, you are taken on a ride in a sleigh train pulled by a reindeer and then you're offered a ragu made of one of its "cousins". Even though I am an omnivore, I went for a veg option. I do realize that this is the main meat option Lapland offers, and I do understand the concept, but it just doesn't work for me due to a terrible direct connection in my mind. What contributes to the mixed feeling is the sleigh train itself as well. On one hand you have animals used much like those in a circus, for the crowd's fun, on the other hand - this is probably how they earn for their lives. I don't know. I got back from this visit really confused. On top of that (not anyone's fault) I had a very un-polar weather (+6 C, snow thin and melting) which made this whole experience well below worthwhile.

The tour of the Sami Camp to understand their culture, beliefs, living style, food-habits, occupation, etc. is certainly worth a visit. They have a rich culture and also a rich breed of Reindeers which they use for food, skin and other purposes.
The trip is about 5 hours and includes, feeding the reindeer, a reindeer sledge ride and then a talk on the Sami culture by a Sami herdsman ending with a nice reindeer stew.

When you are staying at the SamiCamp in Tromsø, you're treated with the kindness and warmth of a lovely family. Already from the point we were picked up by one of the hosts at our apartment in Tromsø, he told us about his personal experiences as a Sámi as well as giving us a brief introduction to the history and recent developments of the Sámi nation. Once we arrived at the camp, we were shown to the reindeers that live just a few steps away from the cozy and heated goahti that waited for us. The goahti itself was just splendid; a fresh tent with double layers, two heaters (one with gas and one with petrol), a warm and comfortable double bed, and two armchairs with an accompanying table. After installing ourselves in the goahti, we went for the reindeer soup dinner in a lavvu next to the sea, some more conversations about the Sámi ancient traditions and modern practices, and a breathtaking jojk performed by one of the hosts. In the morning, full breakfast was delivered to the goahti, and we enjoyed it with the sunrise through the windows of the tent. We strongly recommend this to anyone considering staying in a goahti near Tromsø!
I guess it comes without saying: the goahti does not have a toilet (it's a tent), but there is a portable toilet nearby the goahti. The hosts also provided wet napkins and some water for washing our face in evening and morning, which worked perfectly fine for one night.

We joined the Sami camp team one rainy evening to learn about Sami culture and to explore the northern lights. Such a delightful experience.
We learned about the historical challenges of the Sami, experienced a traditional reindeer dinner in their lavoo tent, listened to stories, enjoyed Sami music and felt a great sense of hope that the Sami is an important indigenous group/s within scandinavia that is connecting people to nature in important ways.
Afterwards we learned about the northern lights, how to take photos and where to look in the sky. The sami team is very experienced...so rather than going out into a cloudy rainy night travelling 2.5 hours in a bus to Finland, it was just 15 mins up the road. The clouds magically parted and we had an excellent view of the northern lights. Even though the colours were only very pale green, we could still see the corona and the streaks of northern lights across the sky.
It was a very warm, welcoming experience and a bonus to actually see the northern lights.

Fantastic night with the Logje Sami Family. Thank you for welcoming us into your camp. Unfortunately the northern lights didn’t want to dance, I was contacted to say that we were welcome to enjoy a reindeer sledge ride and to still come. I was so happy as it was a wonderful evening. Lovely stories and the joik. What a lovely family. Highly recommend for a true Sami culture experience.

a magical evening by the fire, in a tent, listening to the sami lady, having a soup and a cinnamon, etc.
the lady sang a song to bring the auroras. a guide and a photographer took me and the other two guests aurora chasing nearby. the auroras danced for nearly an hour. i like to think they came because of the song!

Two of my friends and I went for the northern lights tour knowing that we probably wouldn’t see them due to bad weather. My dad’s family is sámi and from this area of Norway but we don’t know much about our family history, so I was excited to spend time with a family who has kept the tradition alive. Even though we didn’t see the lights, the trip was TOTALLY worth it regardless. The family is so wonderful, we enjoyed talking to them, and learning from them. Bidos is DELICIOUS. They were able to tell me where my family is from based on my grandma’s surname, which is so cool! We will definitely be coming back when we visit Kautokeino. Thank you Logje family!

If you are looking for an authentic Sami experience away from the crowds this is the place to go. Trine is a fantastic host with interesting stories about the Sami culture. Delicious Bidos (Sami meal) by the fire in the cozy lavvu (Sami tent). And.... because the location is outside the city centre (transfer included) it is a great place to see the Northern Lights. I have been to Northern Norway 5 times now and I saw the most spectacular Aurora here. Thank you Trine and Jan Erik this is a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life.

After visiting and beeing with reindeer herders for a while, si find this disappointing. This is not authentic, it's a mix between reindeer herding and a show for tourist, claiming to tell how the samis are living. The problem, it's not. Not tradisional yoikers, and they can't dress properly in the sami clothing.

From Trine@SamiCamp: Hello Fred. Sorry that you feel the visit to our camp was disappoiting. Short history about us. Samicamp belongs to member of the Sami Logje family. Our family name is one of the oldest Sami family name in Kautokeino.Kautokenio is one of the main city of sami people and are destinated in Finnmark close to the Finland border. Logje families have all the reindeers in Kautokeino wintertime and travel with all the reindeers to Islands close to Tromso in summertime(april/may) , and then back to Kautokeino winter time. This have been going on for centuries and always by walking. Nowdays the herders follow the reindeers by snowmobiles, but we shall not longer back in time to my husband father. He did all the travel by walking. The travel back to Kautokeino ( 400 km) starts medio October /november. Same time we bring some of the reindeers and establishes our SamiCamp at Kvaløya island close to Tromsø. This is a camp were we offer our guest reindeer sledding, feeding reindeer and storytelling. All crew in Camp are and have relatives to the Logje family and through that the right to were Sami clothing. Me example. I use the sea Sami version of Samikofte (Gakti) and the rest of us are using the Logje/Kautokeino traditional version. But like everything else, everything changes, so the young ones like to use modern versions. And their are all proud of dressing up in Sami Clothing. Just want to mention : My husband using the model of the original 1852. As far as the joik. Our guide and the owner of the reindeers Nils present the old traditional way of joik and Therese/ Me do modern versions. If you think what we are doing is just a show it have to be your words and opinion and we will respect that, but we are not agree with you at all in this matters . We in SamiCamp are all members of the Logje family as i told, and have the deepest respect of all Sami and the Samiway of living done by generations of our families and we will never do a show out of it.
