I used to like this library a lot more than I do now. It used to be a lot quieter and more like a traditional library where you could study or read without struggling to concentrate. Unfortunately, now they do a lot of activities there that are very noisy, especially for kids such as singing nursery rhymes to babies for hours whilst you sit there tearing your hair out listening to crying kids and mums who can't sing for toffee. Call me old-fashioned for thinking a library should be quiet, but I'm actually only 22 and even I can see that this library is much more of a community centre than a library. And it's not just once a week either, I have been going in this library regularly and every time I go in, there is some kind of activity that is disruptive to reading or studying. A bit of background noise such as quiet talking is expected and wouldn't be a problem, but this is ridiculous.
The books available are varied and they are always quick to get in any books you reserve from other libraries under Suffolk Libraries. The self-service machines are a life-saver and mean I don't have to interact with anyone. I wish there was a bit more seating, because there aren't many tables and chairs available. I also wish they would have at least 1 table that was high enough for me to sit at whilst in my wheelchair, because the tables here are really low and I can't even get my legs under them, never mind actually use them without bending double to reach it.

A nice building with a great library. Great for recourses, books or just sight seeing. Overall, a great place.

Come to the library for books, of course, but hundreds of other activities are on offer too.. cups of coffee, internet and computer use, story time of any age of child, lecture hall, fashion shows, and information of every local event going. just come and hide in between the shelves and loose yourself for a few minutes.

Wanted to read some local history today in the library.I am in Ipswich for Christmas Holiday.Saw a cafe in the foyer so chose some books to look through,and planned to have a coffee while reading.Not so.Coffee machine was out of order,so a very helpful assistant who had shown me the local History books suggested that I went to costa and buy a coffee there.After a ten minute queue and a slow service I trudged back to the library to read my books.People were bringing their lunches into the cafe and one chap who was charging up his laptop,iPad,moblie phone etc got a loaf of bread out and made a sandwich.After an hour of reading and people watching.I asked if I could use the toilet.Got told NO.Not a member.Well I am a visitor to Ipswich,so what do you need me to do.Join the library so I can use the loo?
I won’t be visiting this place again.They are much more accommodating at the Museum.My home town library has a reading room,and the toilet is open to all.I am a member of two museum societies,I will be writing about my Ipswich experience in next months journal.

I visited this library for a meeting. There are (what looks like) newly refurbished meeting rooms on the second floor. Lift access - or stairs.
The rooms are extremely well equipped, light and comfortable. Could have comfortably sat 30+ but we had about 10 people - and it was fine. Tea and coffee by arrangement.
Library staff were very helpful and accommodating.
I would recommend this venue for meetings.

The building is beautiful, there are plenty of books, staff are helpful. However, there are too many people just using it as a place to hang out, and it is not as quiet as needed. Not enough seating. The stairs are tough going with or without mobility problems. Rooms upstairs feel very unwelcoming, and very awkward to sit studying as eyes are on you too much.

I have used this library since my teens, that’s 40 years, and the changes since then have been immense. The staff are knowledgeable and very helpful, and although the inside has changed somewhat, the essence of the library is still there. You can reserve a computer and go online, order your books from home, i.e. Click and Collect and they are waiting for you on a shelf when you arrive, you can have a cup of coffee, do research and meet other people. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful facility in the town. Occasionally there may be an undesirable person outside on the bench but that is not their fault rather a sign of the times. Libraries are for everyone, thank goodness!

We thought we were entering a pub rather than a library, there were beer cans inside the front entrance. We walked through to the main reception and the carpet was filthy, it looked like it had not been cleaned for the last years it was covered in stains. We went to the counter and a member of staff and a customer were having a heated argument. We later found out the staff member was actually the manager. We would not recommend this library but I'm sure there are better ones in the Ipswich area.

Lovely open library with very helpful staff. Good facilities on offer. Great for all age groups. A must for the community.
