I DROVE A LIFEBOAT!

Amazing tour! Kevin was excellent and very passionate. We got to see a boat capsize in the pool and I drove the lifeboat simulator out of Dover!!

Hello George Thanks for your excellent feedback on the College Discovery Tour and in particular Kevin, one of our talented volunteer tour guides. The Search and Rescue Command simulator is definitely one of the highlights and glad that you got a chance to be the helm! Great that you got to see our crew training for their emergency procedures exercises as well. Had the discovery tour. Chris Marling certainly knew all the facts. It was extremely interesting and made you very proud of all the achievements of the RNLI. So much to see and learn about. You can stay, eat and drink at poole lifeboat centre. Well worth a visit .

Very informative and good value

Very interesting and informative tour. Got to see the outside area, classrooms, the very impressive training pool, the mechanical/engine training maintenance training facility and a 'trip' in the wheelhouse of the lifeboat simulator. Very good and knowledgeable tour guide and great value for money. Gives you a comprehensive overview of the fantastic lifesaving work done by the RNLI. Recommended. We have also booked the lifeboat manufacturing tour as well.

Interesting Tour of RNLI HQ College

Organised a Tour of the RNLI College for the Science & Technology Group of Purbeck U3A. The tour took a little over 90 minutes and started in the morning at 10:30. We were split into two groups each with an allocated Tour Guide who with enthusiasm, knowledge and expertise showed us round the College, including some of the areas where trainees learn new lifeboat skills. Unfortunately there were none in the large swimming pool sized tank at the time of our visit and our Guide said that this is often the case on Wednesdays. Wish I’d known this when I booked the Tour back in April! We had to be satisfied with a rather poor video of tank activities on a small screen. However the Lifeboat Simulator was available for us to enter and experience what it’s like to be travelling through rough seas off shore from Dover to aid a large tanker on fire. For most of us the simulator was the highlight of the tour. Our tour ended in a workshop where lifeboat engines were serviced - including the special propulsion equipment used in the latest Shannon Class lifeboats (which don’t use propellors). Use was made of the restaurant and bar at the College by some of us to complete an enjoyable morning.

Hello Chris Thank you for taking the time to review our Discovery Tour so fully and thank you also for your photos and your comments about our volunteer tour guide. Seeing the wet training in the pool is always a bonus and the schedule of 2,000 slots over the year for Emergency Crew Training which is now compulsory for all crew before they can go out on a shout, does provide us with some challenges to coordinate tours around the time the training is on. Nevertheless, I hope that the simulator and tour around the live engine workshop added to your enjoyment. Thank you for your support and hope to see you back at the college again soon. Best regards

Excellent tour

Most enjoyable tour with Evelyn. She was so passionate and knowledgeable. So interesting to see the facilities and hear what training the volunteer crews have to receive. The simulator is excellent, just a shame I get motion sickness!

Fantastic opportunity to see behind the scenes of the RNLI - Evelyn knowledgeable, passionate and inspiring tour guide. Didn’t know RNLI are building their own boats, got to see the training pool and experience the simulator…. Great value £7.50!!

Started with visit to Old Museum, dinner at the Riggers, and the Poole Lifeboat Open Day…. Fab RNLI wend with husband and mother-in-law..
