This was, I think, our third visit. It is such a lovely place and once away from the quayside you can find peace and quiet following the paths around the island. We were fortunate on this visit to see some red squirrels. Will definitely visit again one day. My only negative comment is the transportation to/from the island which is pricey (and no discount for NT members) and there could be a better way of taking payment for tickets and organising the queue system. See reviews of Brownsea Island Ferries.

Brownsea Island was somewhere I wanted to visit for several years and we had a weekend in Poole for our Anniversary.
The weather was sunny and warm and the sea was calm and we caught the Ferry from Poole Quays to the Island. We had coffee in the Cafe and made our way to the back of the Church and into the woods and were rewarded with the red squirrels gathering their food on the ground for the Winter. It was peaceful sitting on a log just taking in nature and wildlife. We walked around to see the Wildfowl in the lagoon and back to the Cafe and the Ferry.

The island was lovely, getting there not so! Arrived at 10.45 for the 11 0'clock boat. Because you can't book a ticket the queue was horrendous. As the boat filled we (and a couple of others)were told we couldn't get on, so then had to wait in line for another hour. Didn't dare go away and come back in case the same thing happened again. Surely there must be a way to have a system better than this? If when you arrive you get issued with a number you could go away and come back in time for the ferry. The consequence of this was having to have our picnic quickly not far into the island because we wanted to join the 1 0'clock squirrel walk. The walk was very informative about the island and it's wildlife. We spent a few lovely hours on the island but because of the Ferry situation decided to go and queue for the 4 0'clock rather than the original last boat plan. Was such a shame on an otherwise good trip

On last day of Sept. we enjoyed a fantastic visit to Brownsea Island in perfect late summer weather fora walking tour along the myriad woodland paths, going stealthily into the Avocet and Oyster Catcher Hides and meeting people en route and asking if they had sighted the shy red squirrel :now well protected down to 200 and well trekked but only photographed in total silence.I was interested to learn at the St Mary`s C of E built in 1854 that it holds regular services throughout the year, including performances of Shakespearian plays-this Christmas `Romeo and Juliet' and special church and play ferries commissioned for these well supported community occasions on Brownsea with resident poulation of only 30 or so inhabitants.

If you’re willing to walk beyond the jetty and the cafe (which I feel many people are not…) you’ll experience how amazing Brownsea can be. We stayed a night on the campsite and spent a day and a half exploring the island. Tons of little beaches, loads of woodland and so much to explore. Over the couple of days we saw at least 10 red squirrels, 2 deer including an epic stag and lots of bird life. The Dorset Wildlife Trust reserve is definitely worth a visit too. It’s not the cheapest day out you’ll ever have, but it’s well worth it.

I don't like leaving negative reviews but don't bother. £45 for the ferry and entry another £15 for a snack, all for a walk in a wood. There really is nothing to see and I can't believe the NT has the gall to suggest there is. We did manage to see 3 red squirrels which was the only high point. Very disappointed.

Beautiful space peaceful with fantastic views and greenery. We went on a Saturday but it didn’t feel crowded I guess the capacity of the boats limits the visitors

Nice to see red squirrels but little else on the island. We couldn't even find a picnic table to eat our food.

I don't think so. Can't recall seeing any - but this may be because they have an organised tour on an open sided electric vehicle

How long does the play twelfth night last for as we would like to know for car parking reasons.
Hi there,
The ferries start to leave Poole Quay from 5pm and the last ferry to depart the island from 11:15pm.
I hope that helps!
Thanks

Over covid we have not ventured to ANY NT places despite being members for many years. Next week we wanted to visit Brownsea island but discover it is not dog friendly. Why? If dogs are kept on leads I can't see a problem.

Hi there - sorry we don't allow dogs onto the island because of nesting birds and the risk of disturbing the population of rare red squirrels - but we do allow guide and assistance dogs on the island.

Where is the best place to park to get the ferry from Poole
We parked at in Poole Quay multistorey car park which is less then 5 minutes walk to the Ferries and also a number of restaurants. It was easy to find using Google maps.

are you allowed to feed the red squirrels or peacocks?
Hi there, we don't encourage feeding of any of the wild animals on the National Trust (NT) areas of the island. The chickens are the only animals that the NT staff feed. If they are fed regularly by the public, they can end up hassling visitors for their picnic, and tend not to express their natural behaviour by scratching for worms etc. to top up their diet.

I'm a bit confused - we are hoping to visit Brownsea Island in the Easter hols, but do we really have to pay twice: a family ticket of £31 for the ferry from Poole Quay AND the National Trust family ticket of £22 = total of £53?!! That seems a bit pricey for the suggested 2-3 hours walk around the island, are there any discounts please??

Hi - I was a National Trust member at the time and I don't remember having to pay for entry - My National Trust membership for myself and 6 year old Granddaughter was only £6.50 a month.
Can you visit the island in mid-march?

Hi it is closed during the winter months except for private events. It’s best to check opening times on the national trust website as it changes within a few days each year
