We took advantage of the free National Lottery entry and tbh were still completely underwhelmed.
The payable Gardens are really 2 muddy paths that take 20 minutes to walk around. The play area a mud bath. The cafe a total rip off, £4 for cake, £5 for pasties, Cans £2.
House bog standard.
No obvious money invested by the National Trust as per usual, pocketed by the ceo.

Being a national trust member I have visited Nostell a few times and really enjoy it here. The house is a fantastic house to visit with some wonderful rooms and items to see. However our visit to the house this time wasn’t quite as good as previous visits, as the route around felt shorter than previous times I have been, and there was lots of maintenance of the rooms going on. Which I understand needs to be done but scaffolding and ladders arent the greatest of looks in the rooms. We also had the bad luck of being in the house went a fire drill happened. Again understand it has to be done but did take the gloss off. This normally wouldn’t have bothered me but this time I had brought my father in law for a visit.
The grounds of Nostell are amazing. Being members we don’t have to pay to enter gardens which has an excellent playground for the kids, and the walks around the woods and lakes are beautiful. Out of the gardens the expanse of land continues. We enjoyed den building in the woods and exploring up to the obelisk. On previous visits we have used the bike trails up here, which are an excellent addition to the grounds. We have also been geocaching and got sheets for orienteering up here too, showing just how much there is too offer.
The grounds a so huge that even if we don’t bring the bikes we bring scooters for the kids to save there legs.
The cafe does lovely food as well and the kiosk offering drinks to avoid the queue for the cafe is a good idea.
All in all Nostell is an excellent place to visit and you can easily spend a whole day here, we have even brought picnics with us in the past to do just that. Just a shame about the house on this visit.

The house, gardens and parklands are magnificent - well worth a visit. At present, the cafe is really letting the place down as the service is abysmal. We had to queue for forty minutes to get two cups of coffee and two pieces of cake. There is a sign at the entrance saying that things are not quite up to standard due to staff shortages. This has been there for several months now. There are plenty of staff working there because I was watching them work for forty minutes. There is only one cash register and that is the problem. Other staff were taking orders, making drinks and delivering food to tables but all these orders, drinks and payments were ending up at one bottleneck at the cash register where the member of staff using it appeared to be getting called away every other minute to help with something else. Please get it sorted because it is ruining the experience of what is otherwise a magnificent property.

Living fairly nearby and being NT members we often visit Nostell. We went this time for the Christmas decorations. It was a little disappointing as it was all fairy lights, and as beautiful as it looked, they were not in keeping with the age of the property. There are usually hand made decorations made y volunteers, representative of a bygone age.
The christmas trees in the courtyard were nice, and we enjoyed a delicious turkey and cranberry roll in the cafe. I can also recommend he one pot meals which we usually have, but today we preferred a festive treat. The gingerbread village has moved from inside the house to an outbuilding, but still as nice as ever and well worth a look

Exceptional. We had no expectation of any Christmas decorations and found a beautifully festive house. Its not Chatsworth but never claims to be. We thought the simplicity was fantastic and captured the spirit of Christmas wonderfully. The house looked alive with the festive touches it brought the rooms to life. Well done to all involved. We loved the gingerbread village as well 😍

A very lovely walkaround with lots of parking and easy to access from the main road out of Wakefield to Doncaster - would highly recommend. They were also really kind to my mum who has disability issues, and they kindly loaned her a movability scooter for her to get around with, the manager spent time with her setting it up and getting her used to using it, very kind and helpful - thank you.

Visited on a spur of the moment. Arrived near to the final entrance time. Chap on the entrance ‘’door’’ to the courtyard was helpful and polite.
The courtyard looked really festive.
The man in the house itself was dressed in period dress, again he was polite and helpful. Wasn’t sure what to expect - but hoped there were some festive decorations going on.
The main staircase looked stunning! For me it was the best part of the very short walk around.
There was very little open upstairs. We went back down (thanks to the other helpful staff for staircase assistance) to see a few smaller decoration displays.
Father Christmas was there so we stopped and had a chat, nice little extra that we weren’t expecting!
Would return again in the summer so be able to see more of the house.

Cafe was good and the people in the house were really helpful and friendly but it was too short a walk through. Just not enough on show in the house and it was too dark to see things. Very disappointed in the house.

Whilst up north for a weekend away we visited Nostell and were truly amazed. A lot of NT we have visited recently have been short of rooms to visit due to lack of volunteers but this place was a breath of fresh air. Even though not all rooms had guides you could wander through and take time looking at the various artefacts, etc. A big pat on the back to the volunteers here and the NT Directors could learn a lot from these for their other properties.

How long would you expect to spend at Nostell?
John B
Stockton-on-Tees, UK395 bidrag
Not all of the house is open due to Covid, so as it comes out of lockdown you can expect to spend more time inside. We had about an hour and a half inside. The walled garden takes about 30 minutes. There are walks around the lakes only that will take up to an hour and if children are with you they will want to play in the adventure and treasure hunt areas. The rest is extensive woodland and parkland and you can spend as long as you want. The day we visited was good weather and there were lots of people making a day of it and had picnics with them.

Hi. Do i need to book to park on Sunday or can i just turn up and pay to walk round the ground thank you

I believe all national trust are online booking for parking only so if you just turn up you may get turned away. Have a look on the website, you should still be able to book a time slot for tomorrow.
Are dogs allowed in the grounds

Is there a disability discount to get in and is it free parking for disability card holders
Susan C
Leeds, UK30 bidrag
Jenny is correct, disabled parking right next to the courtyard. You can also walk around the grounds visit the cafe and shop without charge. Unless you are a NT member there is a charge to enter the house and part of the grounds that contain the childrens playground and pathways around the top lake.
