The Hepworth was a great place to take a break between the Scottish Border and Banbury. Loved the Gallery.

I have just returned from a much needed trip south visiting elderly friends to find a hideous parking charge notice from some company called Parking Eye. £100!

There were 2 of us so I have checked the story with my passenger.

We arrived at the car park on the 31st August at 13.52, and while I parked the car so that the dogs had some shade, my passenger ran over to get a ticket. The gentleman in front was struggling with the system so it took him about 2 minutes to get a ticket, and my friend picked up her ticket at 13.56 and we put it in the car. She chose the 90 minute ticket, to allow us to walk dogs, have lunch and enjoy the exhibition.

A mini queue had built up behind her, because of the man who was struggling with your system.

We quickly walked the dogs, picked up poos, and then had our healthy lunch sitting on a wall in the sun.

I no longer have the ticket because I have cleaned out the car, however, she has sent me the car sales receipt which she had carefully put in her wallet. It states clearly that she spent £2.00 on parking which allows 90 minutes. I am being fined £100 for being over 2 minutes without a valid ticket.

I think that the machine did not take the number down properly, it only recorded the first 4 digits of my car registration, so your system then thinks I had not paid. This was not the case.

Shoddy behaviour on behalf of Parkingeye and their equipment . I see I am not the only person with this problem.

Please sort it out. We in the north need to support our fabulous museums, but if your colleagues at Parkingeye are being a bit sharp, it wont help.

Our car park is operated by a third party and uses an ANPR camera on the entrance and exit. As the cameras read the number plate of your car, if your full registration plate is not entered into the machine then this will unfortunately result in a fine from the parking company. This may be the reason that the parking notice came through to you. If you want to send us more information to the contact email address on our website then we may be able to look into this further for you.

My daughter really enjoyed the kids activities, which are wonderful for younger children, though everyone can enjoy working with clay.

I particularly admired the ceramics gallery, with works by both new and established craftspeople.

The prototypes of Hepworth’s larger commission pieces are also stunning.

Many thanks for coming to visit The Hepworth Wakefield. We have activities for children on every day of the school holidays and every weekend and Bank Holiday too so always something to explore and participate in. I'm pleased to hear that you found inspiration in the galleries too. We change our exhibitions throughout the year so always something new to see. Thanks for your support and we hope to see you again soon!

We went here as a family of 5 including twin 6 year olds girls and a 2 year old. We learned as we were there it was national play day (or something like that) but the girls simply wanted a visit as they have learned of Barbara Hepworth from school.
Parking was fine and as we approached I was feeling optimistic. Built along the Calder it was arty farty enough just crossing the bridge. We went in and it is rather large. We passed the pleasant man on the reception and the kids were given pencils and sketch paper so they could attempt to copy some of the pieces. A lovely touch.
As my eyes gazed around, I couldn’t help but notice an overwhelming amount of staff appearing to be doing… well.. absolutely naff all. I thought my missus should get a job here. At least she wouldn’t come home saying she’s tired.
We went up the stairs and to the right and they had some pieces to observe. They didn’t speak much to me. I was more interested in looking out of the window as I found the gushing water of the River Calder far more interesting. Nice big windows.
We went across into the next section and was approached by one of the staff. She was telling us about this guy who paints stuff to do with a salon. I couldn’t believe the size of this room. It was about the size of my downstairs, upstairs and 30ft back garden combined, and it had one piece of art of each wall. (And they weren’t very big) I thought what a frigging waste of space man. But I bit my lip and persevered. Another staff member approached to get us to engage in some activity. But we slipped passed and went to another place.
Back down the stairs into a little play room. I thought this is gonna be more the kids scene. We were approached by another wacky arty farty person and asked if we wanted to attach sticks to colourful pieces of fabric and shake em about. I did it. With every fabric of my being screaming ‘what are you doing man?’ We should’ve gone to Cheeky Monkeys in Eastmoor so my little un can have a scrap.
Another one approached to ask to do a survey. I was getting annoyed but politely obliged. Then another one came along to chat and my missus give me the eye to say she was getting annoyed too. We slipped out just before the mums with colourful clothes and bad haircuts started singing. (Cmon you know the types)
On ground floor again I saw the door and though yes.. we’re off. But no! Another room for kids to draw. Okay then I thought this I can get involved in.. so we sat and drew for a bit and then into the next room to draw on the walls. Cool! I thought, after all that something proper. But we were literally approached 5 times by bad haircuts in museum tops to interact. Just leave us alone. We wanted a nice family day out. And then off we went and I jumped straight in the Calder and hoped for an instant death. Didn’t happen but I ended up near Toby Carvery. All in all. A pretty poor day.

Thank you for taking so much time out of your day to leave such a long review! It sounds like your kids had a great time playing on National Play Day on all our activities that are free for your local community. Before your next visit if you check our website you will know what activities are on that day, so as to avoid them if you would prefer less engagement with your family.

Do not use the car park. It is run by Parking Eye who will send you a parking charge notice if you make the slightest mistake. Shame on the Hepworth for being associated with this disreputable company (owned by Capita). Do not use Parking Eye car parks anywhere. The Hepworth is a white elephant (painted a fetching grey) with little of Hepworth's best works. Very expensive for what you get. The garden is nice and free and contains the best artwork. Needless to say we will not return to the Hepworth nor Wakefield.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I am sorry to hear you had difficulty parking, there are many other car parks nearby you can use as listed on our website. Our building was designed by Sir David Chipperfield who recently won the 2023 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the outside of the building is constructed of pigmented concrete which was created in-situ. This gives the building a sculptural appearance, which echoes the shapes and forms in many of Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures of which inside we also have two galleries dedicated to The Hepworth Family Gift. I am very happy to hear you enjoyed our Garden we are very proud of it and hope you can visit again soon!

It is a world class gallery! The beautiful modern architecture sits among red brick converted mills on the river surrounded by riverboats and trees. The site has been made even more stunning by wonderful planting in the grounds surrounding it. Of course Hepworth is an iconic sculptor. She works at different scales and brings out the essence of the materials she works with with consummate skill. The exhibition of ceramics took my breath away and the knowledgeable guide answered every question. The food is great. Go see for yourself! Worth the challenge of finding it!!

Difficult to find initially. Wakefield one way system is a nightmare for visitors. We were meeting our Granddaughter who lives in Wakefield.
Car parking was £4.00, but I hate those terrible machines that you need to put your reg in. The keypad is so worn you cannot see the lettering. No Cash so be warned....card or app.
The building itself is better than the art in my philistine opinion.
Pricey unless you live in Wakefield...(free)
2 pensioners £10 each, 2 coffees £6.30 and eventually 3 sandwiches £17.50. Tip ask for tap water...free.
Staff very friendly.
The views from the windows of the Calder and garden were good.

My issue, like so many others, is with the use of the car park and the managing company Parking Eye Ltd.
I went to pay for our parking on arrival but as I entered the registration number on the machine keypad the screen went blank and I could not see the complete sequence. The machine requested my fee which I duly paid but no ticket came out of the machine which I took to be the norm. I assumed as this was an ANPR system the ticket was not a requirement. However, ten days later I received a demand for £100.00 for a 'breach of conditions' which I sent back on appeal. I was required by Parking Eye Ltd to prove that I had not breached their conditions, which of course, is an utter impossibility. They did however conclude that it was a major input error on my part and made me an offer of a £20.00 fine instead of the normal reduced £40.00. This offer means that you cannot pursue your case for an unfair charge/fine through the parking appeal body POPLA, meaning that Parking Eye net the £20.00 regardless of the state of their equipment and the fact that I paid the full parking charge. Beware, the odds are against you in these places, and these so called reduced charges are a trap to enable the company to extract money from the unwary.

I live locally.. an able bodied person could walk there in ten minutes; it takes me three times as long. I went down to have a look at the garden for some inspiration, and since I was having a bad day with my COPD I drove down in the car (5minutes). I drove onto Gallery Walk with the intention of parking in the disabled bays. They had been coned off preventing parking. No problem I drove to the car park round the corner displayed my Blue Badge and proceeded over the bridge to the garden.
Today I received an intimidating letter from the company employed by the Hepworth demanding £100 for not paying (reduced to £60 if I pay promptly) I had misread the signage and genuinely thought I could park for free. So my little trip down the road has cost me £60.
The Hepworth gets numerous grants to support it, used to be free but now charges non-residents entry fees. The parking charge for Wakefield residents is in effect and entrance charge to the gallery if you live far enough away to need a car to get there.
It promotes equal access to the arts, but it'll cost you . What a miserable state of affairs . NOTE PARKING IS NOT FREE WITH A BLUE BADGE unless you are lucky and manage to get a disabled bay providing they are not blocked off.

I know that you have been in touch with the gallery about this and we have been able to resolve the issue. We do have free blue badge parking bays on gallery walk so please do use these on any future visit, I'm sorry this wasn't available during your visit and this won't occur again. If you find these are full when you arrive you can always give us a quick call and we can sort out an alternative for you. As well as an option to park at The Hepworth Wakefield the local free city bus also stops just outside on Doncaster road and runs all throughout the day.
