We’ve had a couple of nice trips to the museum over the summer holidays. They always have great and low cost activities on for children. We did the trail through the museum which was a good length and difficulty. Plus the girls enjoyed entering their code into the phone at the end. The Doctor Who exhibition was great - amazing artwork and nice to have the dressing up outfits and Dalek to interact with too.
We also visited on a different day and did a craft activity to make a robot hand - this was actually very fiddly to do and was made difficult by the fact that there were almost no chairs in the craft room so you had to bend down to the tables or kneel on the floor. That’s my only criticism though. The staff were all friendly and very welcoming. We also enjoyed interacting with the robots they had and trying out the games with Player Ready too. I’m sure we will be back during the next school break!

Located in the Great Hall of Taunt Castle, The Museum of Somerset is an excellent museum with interesting exhibits and facts well displayed. I found the Roman mosaic floor particularly interesting. In this Great Hall, not only have you got The Museum of Somerset but, on the first floor, you also have the Somerset Military Museum and, surprisingly, there's no charge for either of them (although donations are requested). For the time that you can spend here, to me, it's worth £5 of anyone's money.

The museum was excellent - staff really helpful. Some really interesting areas and exhibits. We visited with an overseas visitor who found it fascinating. Cafe was excellent with good coffee too.

What a fantastic place to visit for all ages! We spent a good 2-3 hours here. It was a wonderful experience from the front door welcome all the way to the cafe serving delicious things.
We were mesmerised by the entrance tree sculpture, sitting under its branches listing to the birdsong, reading the inscriptions and looking for its other hidden gems.
There was a perfect number of exhibits displayed in this museum - creatively exhibited and wonderfully interpreted throughout with bitesized well-signposted pieces of information. The noise level in half term week showed just how engaging this museum is; though equally engaging for those of a twilight age group!
It was fascinating to learn about the geology of Somerset and beyond, the rocks, the environment they were created in and the creatures inhabiting the area though the geological eras to the present day. Amazing to see the fossils; Darwinian evolution in evidence.
As we moved us through to the ‘modern’ era. Again great thought was given to imparting information about the Anglo Saxons and Romans, through a fascinating number of artefacts; engaging without being overwhelming. A breathtaking highlight was the almost intact Roman floor tile depiction of the story of Dido and Aeneas. Really interested to read about Duke of Monmouth - a little-known part of history, towards the end of the Stuart dynasty.
The museum was augmented with a fantastic cafe serving delicious and beautifully presented food by attentive staff.
A great day out! Thank you!

This is a fantastic museum. There are some great galleries, with lots of different things to see. There are lifts to get to each floor, so it was easy to get around with a pushchair. My 3 year old enjoyed looking at the dinosaur fossils, building an ammonite and doing a mosaic puzzle in the first room. Sadly after that, it was a bit boring for him. There are no more interactive things in the other galleries (there are a few dress up areas that he wasn't interested in). He just kept asking for more kids things. Other museums we've been to have had a lot more things for the little ones, which is great for kids, but also adults who can then have time to look at the displays properly.
It is a lovely museum and well worth a visit though.

Have visited many times. It's bright and modern.
Has many fascinating things to see, the staff are always welcoming and it's extremely child friendly.
There are several areas where they can dress up, colour in or experiment with things.
There's a great little cafe and gift shop.
The museum also hosts many interesting events throughout the year.

This is a fascinating museum, really well layered out, and in a brilliant building. The route through takes you from pre history to modern day and it has some really interesting items to explore.
The cafe is well worth a visit, really friendly staff, nice food, and if you are gluten free then you have to try their cakes!
All this and it is free!

Free to enter museum with café. When we went there was an amazing art exhibition in the hall on the right, well worth seeing - we donated using the pay as you feel boxes which accept cash or contactless payments. There's a military museum as well as a fascinating collection of archaeological finds and many items from various sites in and around Somerset. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. We spent the best part of our day trip to Taunton here and would certainly recommend it, particularly if you are interested in any Iron Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon history. The highlight of our day, thank you!

Is this wheelchair accessible throughout

Don't think so. Didn't see any when I was there, so I wouldn't risk it. Good walks in and around Taunton though.

Walk through the portcullis between fat face and next and it’s on the right just past the Castle Hotel

Where is the best place to park if you want to visit the museum?
Skrevet 20. august 2017
Probably too late - Morrisons is free for two hours and is large so normally has spaces.
