The Mercury Theatre Restaurant is a beautiful space, with comfortable chairs, well spaced outside seating and a great place to meet or to have a coffee etc in the interval,or before a performance or at any time during the day.
HOWEVER the service is poor, amateur, one of the bar staff was actually sitting on the counter top when we went in!!! Very unhygienic! And the coffee is appalling!!!!! we've been several times and the coffee has not improved at all. It's extremely weak,in fact the cappuccino could easily have been just hot milk!!! We won't be going again until the coffee and the service improve and someone with some degree of authority is in charge!

Had a lovely lunch at this place. Food was good and sensibly priced. Very clean and following face covering advice re Covid 19. Facilties were spotless too. Menu was varied with choice of usual panini and toasted sandwiches along side lunch time hot meals. Very reasonable prices. Would recommend this place for aunchtime catch up or after or before seeing a show at the theatre. It's licensed too.

Went to see the Hunchback of Notre dame stage production with my parents , to celebrate Mum’s birthday. Never have I been so blown away by a theatre performance . You would not have thought it was by the Colchester amateur dramatic society . They were incredible !! The set for notre Dane and the costumes were so professional and on point . The singing voices were so amazing and all the songs sung had such a powerful impact , you hung on every single word. I could not take my eyes of the stage . Many songs from the original Disney cover film were also included which just made it all the more enjoyable to watch and listen too .
The part of Quasimodo was played by profoundly death actor who used sign language the whole way through , accompanied by another actor who provided the voiceover and the singing parts . Just breathtaking to see ! Thank you so much for such a memorable evening . My first time seeing the Hunchback of notre dame as a stage production , and it felt like I was at the west end . Look forward to seeing what the Colchester amateur dramatic society do next .
Also went to see Aladdin Boxing Day and that was equally as enjoyable with a great cast . :)

Staff are very friendly. Service is excellent. They even brought a water bowl for our dog (we sat outside). The Mercury is a real asset. They deserve to do well.

I love the Mercury , the best theatre around . Im not one for leaving reviews but feel i have to mention Saturdays disappointing return after lockdown . We arrived at 5.45 hoping for a nice meal and were assured by a staff member that the seafood sharing platter was a substantial meal for two people . This was not the case but it was too late to re order so i had to supplement my meal with a croissant from the bar . I also thought the bar staff were rather slow considering it was not a full house . The performance itself was totally lacklustre with very little variation or punch in the songs and music, I could easily have nodded off ! . At £33 a ticket i expect more than just over an hours entertainment and that included an extra song added at the end ! and why was there no intermission ?? or no explanation as to why a stand in can not have an intermission . So there we were out of the door at 8.45 thinking what shall we do now ?? maybe we attended the matinee by mistake !

Booked for Tell Me On A Sunday starring Jodie Prenger, had a good sharing platter in the cafe beforehand. The show started at 7.40pm where it was announced that the place of Emma was now being taken by Jodie ....... and I didn't get the last name but was clear it was an understudy. This show is supposed to tell the story of a young woman's love life in New York through song. The singer had a pretty voice but it was completely one dimensional and all the songs sounded the same, with no raw emotion or storytelling through her voice or any projection - I wouldn't have wanted to be at the back of the auditorium. As there was no talk at the end the show barely lasted an hour, the cost of which was £70 for my husband and I for one hour's poor entertainment!! Come on Mercury, you can do better than that! You could have at least given us a proper explanation for the replacement and added 25 more minutes of Andrew Lloyd Webber or Don Black classics to make up for the shortfall. I feel we were short changed to what was advertised.

We visited Colchester today while on holiday and we were on our way back to the car when we decided to drop into the cafe/bar for a spot of lunch. The place wasn’t overly busy so we took a seat outside and ordered 2 diet cokes for our children and two lattes for ourselves to go with 2 adult mozzarella and prosciutto paninis, a ham and cheese toastie for one daughter and a tuna toastie for the other daughter.
The menu says drinks are served immediately but after being sat for almost 10 minutes we finally got our drinks and only because a passing server asked us to “remind her what we had ordered”
Drinks came and we thought as we had only ordered paninis they would be along pretty quickly. Seems we underestimated the wait as almost another 10 minutes after getting our drinks another server came out and asked if we were still waiting for our food?!? She did apologise and went off to find out where they were and came back to then advise us that they didn’t have any tuna so offered my daughter (aged 9) something else. She also went for a ham and cheese toastie and were told they would be out very soon. We did ask for the girls meals as a priority because at this point they were hungry and getting fed up of waiting. They finally arrived and we were then asked to “remind the server what we had ordered” as ours were still being worked on. They finally did arrive but were so badly presented (pretty much cut and thrown on a plate with not even a garnish) and were only warm at best that we were all left feeling slightly underwhelmed especially given the wait and the prices charged!
Definitely will not visit again if we ever happen to be in Colchester.

Just seen Baskerville, it was a great show, the actors were very good and the set was well done, it was very amusing. Sadly not too many people were in ths audience, possibly due to the cost. Also the seats are no more more comfortable than than they were before.

Thanks for your feedback and we are glad you enjoyed the show!
With the lifting of restrictions and the reopening of theatres during the pandemic weh ve found some performance times more popular than others and we offered performances with a restricted capacity to ensure the safety of all of our visitors.

Here I am again with another fabulous place to review. The new Mercury theatre Csfe/Bar is truly a feast for not only the eyes but the stomach. The food is absolutely sublime,( I'm personally working my way through the menu) everything from wild woodland mushrooms on sourdough toast to Colchester crab chilli linguine, there is something for everyone. In fact it's all so good that I thought it rude not to share this.

Thank you for your wonderful feedback, which we will pass on to the kitchen and team in the cafe bar. Have you tried the tempura broccoli or the chicken satay salad? highly recommended by the theatre team! We hope to see you again soon!

Hi,
I'm thinking of booking to see the musical Oliver at the theatre in October. It will be a birthday treat for my 10 years old granddaughter and i was hoping for advice on what the best seats are to book? I assume centre stalls, but wasn't sure what rows would be best?
I know with some theatre front seats you can end up having to look up and get a neck ache and i would like to try and avoid this but obviously get a good view of everything.
Thanks

Hi there, Oliver! will be in our new temporary off-site venue Mercury at Abbey Field so the seating plan is different to that of the main auditorium in our old building. Rows A-Q (stalls area and first row of the horseshoe area) are all flat, and Rows R-Y are all tiered as our regular auditorium was. The stage in this new space is not as high as our previous one, so if you're bringing smaller guests the first few rows should be absolutely fine, or if you'd prefer to be higher up we'd recommend sitting in Row R or behind. Unless marked as restricted however, all of the seats in our new venue will have a good view of the stage :) We hope this helps! - Mercury Marketing Team

Where are the best rows/seats to sit in to view a show?
Mercury Theatre
Colchester, UK
Hi Andrea, all of our seats have a good view of the stage :) On the rare occasion that a seat has a limited view, this will be indicated by a little 'i' on the seat when you're looking at the seating plan - you can hover over this for more information. You might like to sit further forward for more intimate productions with smaller casts, but that's entirely a matter of preference - many of our audience have their favourite seats towards the middle or back of the auditorium! If you've never been before and aren't sure, you can always go for something in the middle. We have a steep 'rake' meaning your view shouldn't be hindered by the person in front. Hope that helps! - Amy
Does row O have a restricted view at all? Any opinions? Thanks
