Awe-inspiring. Thank you Stanley Spencer for your dedication and thank you to the National Trust for looking after it and making it available for all to see.

Thought provoking and deep. Worth time to reflect on horrors of war and human needs. Very plain external building with these amazing frescos. Reminiscent of Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. Also memorial to the WW1 macadonia campaign and Salonika battle.

What a delightful surprise! Wall-to-wall Stanley Spencer, a bit of modern history and very, very nice staff, cheerful, polite, knowledgeable, helpful. Also the plants and bee hotels just up the road are reasonably priced

This really is a hidden gem that not many people know about. Inside the small well preserved chapel is full of Stunning artwork throughout, with all the walls covered with different pieces telling different stories of wartime encounters. Absolutely fascinating to see and admire all the paintings.

We visited the chapel on a whim as we were driving along the M4 with time on our hands and the lure of seeing work by Spencer.
Having said that I was very moved by the whole experience which combined religion and army service both of which have shaped my life. We were fortunate to visit the Arena chapel in Padua some years ago to see the Giotto murals and so the Spencer artwork we viewed in perspective.
The entire building is unassuming yet expects reference and respect. It is not sombre but nor is it exuberant. There are some interesting displays which give a background to the Chapel which are best seen before viewing the murals.
Just a note for the NT team - we parked in the car park and did not see the pedestrian gate. We saw people going into the Chapel and followed them in - which was a mistake as it is best to enter from the back. Better signage is required. Thanks to the NT for maintaining this real gem.

This is a great place to visit if you appreciate the work of one of the greatest 20th century UK painters, Stanley Spencer. Inspired by the Scrovegni chapel in Padua (but on a rather smaller scale) he has single-handedly created an impressive and moving artwork in an unprepossessing building. The project was funded in order to commemorate Lieutenant Sandham who was killed in the First World War, and in particular the Salonika campaign, which has no known memorial elsewhere. Spencer himself had been keen to serve in the War but was too short. However, as a medical auxiliary he saw at first hand the terrible casualties of war, first in the Beaufort Hospital in Bristol, where wounded soldiers were brought; and later in the Macedonian campaign. The two side walls of the chapel are covered by a sequence of pictures showing scenes in both places, on wards, on the battlefield, in his distinctive "Neo_Primitive" style, with touching detail and a little humour. He appears himself in some of the scenes. The east end is a huge floor-to-ceiling allegorical and theologically-inspired scene showing dead soldiers being received into heaven by Christ. There was some difficulty about getting the chapel consecrated, because the image of Christ was too small! A small display in adjoining rooms tells the story of the chapel effectively.

The introductory displays and video really give a good background to Stanley Spencer's works in the chapel. We were fortunate enough to have the Memorial Chapel to ourselves and what a moving and fascinating experience it was. The art had such warmth & The Resurrection was enthralling.

We visited with friends. I'd been about 30 years ago when I think the set up was more basic. Now there are additional small exhibitions, a small shop, toilets and helpful staff. The Chapel itself is the star and there is plenty of information about the paintings and their inspiration on handouts or from the knowledgeable guide (Giles?) who was able to answer questions and enter into friendly discussions. There is s pretty garden to front and back and the Carpenters Arms is very close by for refreshments.

As members of the National Trust we entered for free. The story of the chapel and alms houses was fascinating. The frescoes Stanley Spencer painted in the chapel are stunning, although left us both cold I'm afraid. I much preferred the alms houses and the gardens and thinking of the veterans of the Salonika campaigns relaxing here, growing their vegetables, a world away from the carnage of war.

Hello! Many thanks for your question. I'm afraid the chapel is now closed for the winter; we will reopen to visitors on Wednesday 27 February. Opening times can be found on our website or on the National Trust app.
