We were unable to visit due to lack of parking and very little access for a disabled buggy. Hugely disappointed.

Dear Rick, We are sorry to hear about the problems you experienced. Unfortunately the Museum does not own any land that could be used as a car park and there is no suitable land that we could buy or even rent. The museum buildings do have difficult access because the cottages were built to take advantage of the south facing slope of the valley and are built into the hillside. We gave a lot of thought to how we could overcome this difficulty when we renovated the building a few years ago. We now have full wheelchair access via the top floor from the road behind and there are ramps between all the rooms on this floor. There are also fully accessible toilet facilities. Visitors can see the looms and Spinning Jenny in action and watch clogs being made. We are happy to bring any particular items that might be of interest up to this floor if we have a few days notice, preferably by email. You can see our full access statement on our website under 'Plan a visit' and we urge anybody who has mobility difficulties to check this out.

Dear Annette, Thank you for your review and it was lovely to meet you both on your visit. Not using sat nav is a good point - its system has difficulty differentiating between main roads and narrow lanes. We hope that you enjoyed your stay in our beautiful valley and hope you will come back one day.

Visited this fascinating museum, set inside a terrace of four original cottages hoping to learn some detailed historical information about living and the skills and techniques of local wool manufacturing.
Friendly, knowledgeable volunteers in authentic dress were so welcoming and generously engaging.
The museum itself is set out to lead you through carefully curated spaces with excellent displays. But the treasure lay in the volunteers, no wonder they've won the Queens Award. Every one of them was so engaging, ensuring we didn't miss anything significant. They simply could not have been more thoughtful in responding and demonstrating the matters I sought to understand.
It was a completely delightful and thought provoking visit.
I did not realise hidden within was 1. a fully working loom used to make traditional cloth today for bespoke customers 2. the only authentic working model of a spinning jenny and 3. An actual retrieved clog workshop with every conceivable original tool and item of equipment. The volunteers are experts in use of it all and in explanation. So patient as I asked my questions and 'could they do that again, please?' (like an 8 year old!) More than 2 hours passed in a flash.
This brilliant set up allows the visitor to see at close quarters exactly how everything works.
Cannot recommend highly enough.
Thank you all. Congratulations on your Award.

Thank you for your warm review, we are very pleased that you enjoyed your visit. Our apologies for the delay in responding - we had problems with that internet thingy! We do try to help our visitors understand the process of making cloth and so on - it's what makes us become volunteers. Thank you for your comment about our award. We were as pleased as punch when we got the news.

This museum is a wealth of information on the cloth trade in this area of Yorkshire and if that is not enough for you, how about a practical demonstration of clog making and if that is not enough, how about a lovely cup of tea or coffee and some cakes.
This place has got it all. The staff are dressed in period costume, warm and friendly and very willing to share all their knowledge on carding, spinning and weaving of cloth with practical demonstrations to boot. Enjoy walking around the Victorian scullery and bedroom. Make sure you allow at least three hours to fully appreciate all that is on show. From time to time special craft and attraction days take place so check on the website to make the most of your planned visit.
The museum is open Saturday and Sunday and Bank Holidays.
Parking is slightly problematical and be prepared to park on the public roadway opposite the church. I really enjoyed my day and would recommend a visit without hesitation.

This museum deserves to be visited by far more people, it's truly wonderful! The local crafts demonstrated really brought this era to life. Each volunteer spent time explaining what they were doing and how they became involved in the museum. An afternoon of learning, enrichment was superb. We arrived just after it opened and left just before closed, sadly missing out on came and tea! This place doesn't take cards so definitely come prepared to purchase home made produce.

Thank you for your review and we are very pleased that you enjoyed your visit. You mention that we do not take cards at present but we are in the process of training our team in using a card reader. We will put a note on our website when this is finished and we are able to take cards but in the meantime we are still cash-only.

If you go anywhere whilst visiting Huddersfield take the time to visit this working Museum.
A superb piece of history that left us with long-lasting memories. When you consider the work involved in maintaining this working museum you will be astounded by the knowledge that is freely offered throughout your visit. From a working spinning mill to clogs on your feet, your visit will be hugely rewarded. my only concern is the vast amount of knowledge that is held within the staff members and one that should certainly be passed down through the younger generations.

Thank you, Neil, for taking the time to post your review. We are all delighted that you think we are doing a good job in keeping the heritage of the valley and the domestic textile industry alive. It's very important to us as we see change taking place all the time and we recognise that we need to make sure that as many people as possible know about the past and perhaps use that knowledge to benefit our lives today. We are all volunteers and understand that we need to have a good team to carry on the work so we are always on the lookout for new recruits, particularly young people who can carry on in the future. Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the museum and things are going to get exciting. Our website and Facebook page have details of our Christmas events and the programme for the anniversary. Potential volunteers can contact us via email info@colnevalleymuseum.org.uk. Roll on 2020!

I love this place...it was one of my first school trips back on the 90's. Since then I have visited regularly. I love the staff and the different things to see. It really is a fantastic museum. I love it on Golcar Lilley day. They are so kind to the children and give you a wonderful experience. Thank you and keep up the good work

Thank you, Alexandra, what a lovely review! We have a lot of visitors who come to see us regularly and we try to make sure that there is something new for them to see as much as we can. We're just now looking forward to our Christmas events, starting with 'Stir Up Sunday' on November 24th when we'll be making Christmas puddings and details of all the events are on our website.

A brilliant little museum full of interesting local historical occupations and life styles, loads of hands on artefacts. Volunteers full of knowledge and keen to share it. Never before seen children of varying ages so interested in a museum - not a moments boredom.

This is a very interesting museum run by dedicated knowledgable volunteers. who gave us a lovely warm welcome on a very dreary wet summers day! The museum is in the form of linked cottages with each room offering something of real interest. The presence of a guide dressed in period dress who is willing to share their knowledge is a real bonus. Many of the artefacts can be handled which adds to the quality of the visit. In the upper rooms skilled craftspeople demonstrated weaving, spinning and clog making and gave us lots of time to share their expertise. Entertaining a 12 and 14 year old is not easy but they really enjoyed the ' hands on nature ' of the visit, trying to use the loom and wearing the clogs! The delightful cafe serving home made cakes was a welcome treat at the end of the tour. Thank you to you all . We will return.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review and we are very pleased that you all enjoyed your visit. We try to appeal to all ages and it seems that the best way to do this is by letting visitors 'have a go'. We can tailor the hands on experience to suit the visitor and will always give them the chance to try their hand at the skills we offer. We look forward to seeing you again, hopefully with better weather! P.S. We like the cakes too and count ourselves lucky that we have so many good bakers among our volunteers.
