A visit to this wonderful house & gardens is a must. We were lucky enough to have a guided tour by the current owner who was charming & informative. The house oozes history & is fascinating, with many interesting artifacts. Apparently, it has featured in several films & TV historical dramas, so we shall be watching those with renewed interest. A light lunch in the cafe after the tour was delicious - altogether this was one of the most interesting places we have ever visited. It was wonderful to learn about one house & family's contribution to English history over so many years.

Fabulous Castle, well maintained with knowledgable and helpful staff. The rooms were packed with interesting artefacts.
The Gardens and Moat were stunning on a beautiful summers day.
Note: Toilets are only located in the car park, a little way from the house

Fascinating, quirky castle. Beautiful surroundings. Very pretty garden borders. Lovely café and tasteful shop goods. Workers & volunteers seem to want to share their love of the place.

Visited in 2015 and fell in love with the house then. Returned this year to enjoy all its charm and character again. Surrounded by a moat, lots of nooks and crannies, a beautiful rose garden and lots of history. Just a delight. Please visit.

Surrounded by a wide moat, Broughton castle is a pleasant visit for a couple of hours. Though the tour or the castle was signed in each room, unobtrusive guides were on hand to answer questions and share the stories of the castle and its occupants. Outside, the formal gardens and surrounding parkland provide great views of the castle from all angles. A small shop and cafe in the grounds provide inexpensive teas, coffee and cake. Covid management was excellent throughout. Wonderful!

Well-kept grounds.
Large area to go for a walk.
Id rather no dogs were allowed as there are often baby lambs each year - and I have had dogs attack us at picnics

Good start to our short staycation in Oxfordshire area. Castle does not look that impressive from outside and the grounds/gardens were not that big.
Inside there are some nice rooms to see on the one way system and plenty of info available about items on display.
In some areas the furniture was very modern looking and thus out of place.
Booking restrictions and timings when you are travelling for several hours could be difficult to adhere to.

Is it accessible for wheelchair users?

To a degree. The gardens are all accessible by wheelchair, so too two of the three rooms on the ground floor - the Great Hall and Dining Room (one step between them). I'm afraid the restrictions caused by being in a 1300 and 1550 house prevent us from doing much more.
All the toilet facilities, including the Disabled Toilet are in the car park.

I'm actually a Broughton descendant and will be visiting the castle. Any must sees in the area that you could suggest?

Hi - if I had a couple of days in the area I'd also aim to see Rousham, Canons Ashby, Chasleton, the gardens at Broughton Grange (only on Wednesdays) and Romeo & Juliet at the RSC in Stratford-upon-Avon. All within c. 15 miles. Those would make for a great couple of days! Have a good trip

We are visiting from Dubai & would love to show our 4 year old twins some of their English heritage. We will be with their grandparents & looking after my sister in law's well behaved small Tsang apso dog. Is the house suitable for dogs ( inside or just the grounds/tea rooms) & children? It looks beautiful! Many thanks, Hannah

V suitable for dogs and 4 year-olds! The latter can go inside the house but not the former; lovely garden and park for the dog, and a dog bowl outside the Tea Room.

Hello
My local gardening club is considering a visit. Can you give an estimate of how long it would take to go round the Castle, and then how long to walk around the garden on average? Also, is there a best time to visit the garden - are there some times when it is particularly spectacular?
Regards
Jan

Hello Jan,
private tours of the house take about 1.15 hours; then the garden can be anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour plus. Roses are great late June / early July (maybe especially late June given the last week!). Tea room is nice too! As you probably know we are open 2-5pm, Wed & Sundays through to end September, but also anytime by appointment for private groups, best is to contact Joanna or Sarah - you can get their email address on our website. Hope you can make it! best rgds

Hi Simon
I'm afraid we are close now until next April. The website appears to have gone down after lots of visitors came on during the Antiques Roadshow! Soryy. Next year we are open Sundays and Wednesdays from Aoril to September, and bank holiday Mondays. I hope you will be able to come then.
