Lovely gardens and free to enter!!!
okt. 2021
A lovely story, on how the gardens were developed, and a great place to while away an hour. The gardens are very pretty, well laid out, with glimpses of the sea through the trees.
Free to enter and adjacent free car parking, on the edge of the South Downs. There is a hotel, with tea rooms also adjacent to the gardens.

Beautiful gardens
okt. 2021
This is a beautiful an interesting garden with many different types of trees, bushes & plants, lots of benches to sit & enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Bring a book and sandwiches and enjoy yourself. During the lockdown They have spent a lot of money on improving the grounds, Laying new footpath‘s and a visitors Centre. You will need transport to get here it’s on the South Downs. This is a great hidden gem. There are toilets as you go in by the entrance.

Lovely gardens - better with the pond !
okt. 2021 • Venner
Disappointed to see the pond area of the gardens which has always been a beautiful feature looking neglected.
Sadly the waterfall has been put out of action as no longer seen as environmentally viable any more. Hence the water was stagnant looking and most of the fish have had to be removed.
After receiving a million pound Lottery grant it’s sad that part of this fund could not have been used to fund a solar water option!
Really hope something can be sorted as be such a shame to lose the pond feature.
On a positive the new disabled access is great .
The general gardens look beautiful and a lot of funding has gone towards protecting the many rare plant species.

Lovely gardens - restore the pond !
sep. 2021 • Par
It’s the first time my partner has taken me to the gardens and was looking forward to seeing the pond and all the different plants. Some of the plants are fantastic and the gardens are very peaceful. When we saw the pond I was very disappointed.my partner said it use to have a waterfall and small stream that ran down the steps to the main pond. On our visit sadly the water was stagnant and the few fish looked like they are struggling. I can imagine it looked beautiful originally. I hope work will be done to restore the pond to its former glory as nestled
Into the centre of the gardens I can imagine it was a real feature. With solar pumps etc these days it should be easily improved. Fingers crossed as I think it would be sad to loose it.

Quiet & peaceful small free public garden showing plants that thrive on chalk.

Colonel Stern, a rich banker devoted much of his time and fortune experimenting with plant related science.
Here and in his cellar laboratory in adjoining Highdown house he discoverd much about plant growth and reproduction.
The gardens are relatively small but since his day the cliff walls of the quarry have disappeared behind verdant growth.

Possibly the wrong time of year to visit, but didn't seem much to see and areas that seemed sad and appeared neglected which is such a shame.

After a long time being closed for a makeover, the gardens are much improved and well worth a visit.

Lovely snacks and cold drinks in the sun.
jul. 2021
The gardens, as always, were beautiful. The flowers and the Downland setting were lovely.

After a walk around the gardens on a hot afternoon it was great to find the cafe open.

We had cold drinks and paninis. All good and freshly made. Sitting outside under the umbrellas was very pleasant.

Service was quick and friendly.

Would definitely go again when we visit the gardens.

It also has plenty of indoor seating too when the weather is not so good.
