Very disappointed with a visit Salcombe, the guide book raved about what a nice town it was unspoiled and pretty.
We could not find a car park and drove around three times before finally finding somewhere to park. We then had a fairly long walk to the town from here, and found that all the pubs had stopped serving food, we finally found a local cafe and had a really nice lunch - but not what we had expected.
We walked around a bit but found the shops very expensive and aimed at the upper end of the market. Could not even find anywhere to get a newspaper.
We had lunch and then took a long walk back to the car and headed back to our accommodation.

Offering fabulous views up and down the estuary, Salcombe really is the very best of Devon. So much to see and do while in a relaxed and laid back setting. For boating, walking, shopping and eating there is little to compare with sensational Salcombe.

A good location but over-priced. Accommodation is expensive, the only take away fish and chips is an absolute rip-off. Car parking is at airport prices, but a lovely estuary. Numerous dog fights - I counted 165 dogs in a day. A lovely place to go but not stay too long. I would think February would be the best time.

I have been going to Salcombe for 18 years and seen a dramatic change in the last 5 years at least and not a good one. This year was my last! Where do I start, the extortionate prices to rent a holiday home for week that is sometimes quite grotty! That generally doesn't have parking! And the ones that do generally have alot of politics attached to them. The diminishing number of places to eat and drink and the ones that are left seem to have lost the will to live or generally just don't care they are providing an appalling in comparison to the prices being charged.
The prices everywhere seem to be far higher than inflation. A day at the beach means a long walk carrying all of your things needed especially with a young family as there is very limited parking at North sands and none at South and if that isn't enough to put you off the general welcome you get from shop keepers or any staff serving food or drink is far from pleasant. And to top an already terrible week my brand new Havianas flip flops were stolen from North sands

Over rated and crowded
Parking a nightmare and when you find a spot it’s limited parking. Car parks in town too small and gestapo type parking attendant sits waiting to nick you !
Poor Restuarants and pubs. Most eat takeaways and stand in crowded streets and alleys
Beautiful vista and harbour. That cannot be denied but this place has an air of those who frequent it wanting it totally for themselves and have bought up much of the area and it’s property as a yuppie paradise

Salcombe harbour breathtakingly beautiful. Lovely vibe. Unfortunately park and ride is just park. No ride back. Would have had to wait 50 mins for next scheduled bus. Should have parked down by harbour on reflection but Car park was virtually full anyway. Expensive drinks in bars but that’s expected in a tourist area. If I return will take my own picnic.

Pretty steeped town on the edge of the Kingsbridge estuary with various shops, cafes and bars along a number of lanes that run along side the river. Beautiful vista across the estuary to the other side, with boats moored in the harbour. We parked in one of the side streets and walked down so the return was a steepish walk. There are ferries across to the other side. A number of craft stores made for a nice meander through the town.

Salcombe is one of the most beautiful places in the UK. The blue green waters and golden Sands are simply stunning.
Shops are mainly full of expensive clothing.
There are very few restaurants although all the pubs serve food to a restaurant standard but this means there are no proper pubs in the town. The pubs are expensive, I paid £7 for a pint of shandy which is a rip off.
The Sea Monkey on Island Street is an excellent bistro type.
The Salcombe Gin Distillery is well worth a visit. You can make your own.
The alternative is to use the take aways but these too are very expensive and close at 8pm!
Salcombe seems to have lost its soul and in the busy periods it is invaded by loud yuppie types who think they are entitled to do what they wish with no concern for others. There is, like everywhere, a shortage of hospitality staff so you need to be patient and understanding.
There is an hourly bus service to the bottom of the hill which passes the car park at the top of the hill.
Do not follow your sat nav, from the A38, come via Totnes which is a normal width road.
Taxis are very few but the ones I used provide an excellent friendly service. You might be lucky enough to hail one or pick one up off the rank but my advice is to pre book days in advance.
To sum up - Salcombe is well worth a visit for the views and beaches but be prepared for high prices.

Beautiful harbour area spoiled by no parking facilities and the last 15 miles is dangerous narrow often single lane curves . Not worth the stress to get there then nowhere to park !

So looking forward to visiting Salcombe. We caught the number 164 bus from Kingsbridge as we knew parking was a problem. Unfortunately we didn't know that it only dropped you as far as the top of the hill & you had to walk down to the harbour, which was OK for us but my elderly mother struggled. The harbour is quite small, nice view over the water, but that's about it. The shops are mostly overpriced snobby ones. I recommend Dartmouth instead so much more to see & do with easy parking.

Ah I see.......not having much of an interest in Sailing I didn’t take too much notice, but I will say there was a large number of Vessels moored and the Ferry we caught did have to carefully navigate its way to the Departure point. There were also a large number of dingys moored in the steps area.

The nearest station is at Totnes. Frequent trains from London. Taxis available outside the staion, approx half an hour to Salcombe. Buses also available, via Kingsbridge, but not sure where the stop is. Try salcombe, best seaside resort in the UK!
