This was the venue for my daughter's wedding. It's a b beautiful little place close to the town centre. Staff here are extremely welcoming, hospitable and helpful. Catering for the event was provided by the on-site cafe and was excellent. NOTE: the cafe is open to all visitors (when not pre-booked for events) and the food is of the highest standard. Dogs are welcome inside but please see that they remain quiet and well-behaved.

Fascinating history. The hall itself is mid-Norman and is a magnificent example of a great hall. The unique aspect is the collection of horseshoes donated by peers when they visit Oakham, see who you can spot. You can have your photo taken by a replica of the oldest horseshoe. Surrounding the hall is the embankments of the castle which you can climb.

Oakham Castle looks, frankly, boring from the outside but we're so glad we visited it following a recommendation from a friend who said its cafe is excellent. We entered via the cafe and enjoyed two very good coffees. We'd had a hotel cooked breakfast so sadly couldn't manage any of the enticing-looking lunches or cake, alas. The toilets were clean and there were at least 6 of them to choose from. Then we walked into the castle's great hall (which is free to visit) and experienced its wow factor. Others have described the fascinating and unusual interior which was enhanced for us because we hadn't expected it, and we spent ages wandering around. The curator was friendly and happily answered my questions and I bought a couple of items from the little shop. I've visited a lot of castles in my 60-plus years but nothing like this one!

Just the great hall left standing in this nice little market town. The remains of the ramparts are still visible and it's a lovely setting. The hall is free entry and there were helpful guides on hand to point out the many interesting features. Good signage too with more information. An unusual collection of horse shoes from visiting royalty and nobility, everyting in the hall seemed to be in very good condition, well worth an hour or so.

The castle walls have been reduced to mounds of earth with some rubble extant. But the hall itself is in excellent shape with the 19th Century court room furniture intact - a feature of its life that no doubt meant it was saved to this day. A rather strange collection of horses - evidence of the aristocracy wishing ot outdo each other in silly gestures. Very helpful staff.

Surprisingly free to get in, and lots to see and read about. Staff were very informative. Place was very clean and well looked after. Don't leave without a visit to the little tea room, lots of nice cakes to choose from!

A little curio of a place worth a brief visit. Helpful staff give a brief potted history then leave you to wander around. Still occasionally used as a court since the 13th century, you can still see the cell in the corner. A short walk from the high street and parking.
