My wife booked me a Silver Experience so that I could drive a steam train. What an experience it was. Started with a tour around the station, signal box and Loco sheds followed by lunch and then the main event. Experience was shared with another person whilst our respective wives travelled in the train (they were the only passengers). Trip was split into quarters with us alternating the driving and ensured we drove the entire line there and back. The train driver and fireman were brilliant, explaining how everything worked and providing expert tuition. We only travelled at 25mph but it felt a lot faster. My wife even got to be on the footplate whilst the driver swapped the loco from the front to the back on the return journey (she loved it). A boyhood dream fulfilled. Highly recommend this as it was a fantastic day. Thank you to everyone at GCR for an awesome day. Oh and the bacon bap at lunchtime was delicious.

We really enjoyed our lunch today on this lovely train through our local countryside.
The food was excellent, the service was impeccable and friendly. A day that exceeded all our expectations. Thank you to all involved in making it special.

Received a voucher for Xmas 2023. Purchased December 2023. Booked January and had to pay £5 as you’d put prices up in January. Surely if buying a voucher for Christmas it should cover the applicable experience!?
Aside from that went today on the fish & chip train. Not very well organised at Loughborough station. Lack of signs.
Given seat numbers. Train ok.
When we got to Leicester station UBER EATS were waiting with our fish & chips!!!! Seriously not the experience we thought we’d get. 1 ladies toilet only in use on the station platform!
Won’t be rushing back
For an £80 experience I expected more but was safely left disappointed

While the fish & chip train experience is operated by Fox & Edwards Events (who are a close partner of ours and provide important income / new visitors to our operations), we take all feedback seriously and work closely with them to ensure our guests receive the best possible service.
We have discussed the voucher value point with Fox & Edwards Events, who have highlighted that they sell two types of gift vouchers. Experience vouchers cover a specific ticket or event type - such as fish and chips for two people - and last for 12 months (without any impact to the recipient if prices rise). Your gift voucher was purchased for a set monetary value (£75) and could be used on any Fox & Edwards Events trip - including some at £75 (like the 1st class travel & cream tea they offer with us). You opted for a slightly more expensive journey with fish & chips, which had a £5 difference.
We are pleased that you highlight that the train journey itself was OK. This is the main element of every experience we, alone and with Fox & Edwards Events, offer. Our eight mile line, with historic stations, carriages and locomotives, has been delighting visitors since the 1970s but costs a huge amount to upkeep. For example, a single carriage restoration can be up to £150,000. Your booking contributed to that upkeep and we thank you for it.
Thank you for bringing the matter of the facilities at Leicester station and raising your points about the signage, coordination, and overall guest experience to our attention. We recognise the importance of adequate amenities, and we have discussed your feedback to the relevant parties, including Fox and Edwards Events.

I purchased a gift voucher (for over £80) over the phone for afternoon tea for two as a Christmas gift for a family member, intending to use it in the summer. At no point was I advised that limited capacity may impact my ability to use the voucher.
When I tried to use the voucher I was told this wouldn't be possible as there was no remaining availability for the rest of the year but that I could 'try again in November'. I was told that it was my fault for not trying to book earlier, and that I should have read the small print (difficult over the phone!) indicating that there was no recourse if the voucher can't be honoured. They refused to entertain a refund despite being able to identify my voucher on the system and admitting this had arisen because bookings had exceeded expectations, so it emerged they had inadvertently over-sold the vouchers and are now unable to meet demand. It seems that this is largely a revenue generating exercise, and the vouchers are over-sold in the hope they won't actually be used.
The vouchers are valid for two years, however circumstances may make it difficult to wait over a year to be able to use this gift. Nor do I think this is a reasonable expectation.

Had a fantastic day with the grandchildren made all the more special by the wonderful volunteers who were friendly, welcoming and helpful. They also engaged brilliantly with the children. The stations are looking great and took us back to a time when people had a pride in their stations and railways!

Lovely Sunday lunch on the heritage steam railway. We went for our anniversary and loved it, would recommend it to anyone who likes historic trains or is just looking for an unusual venue for a special occasion Sunday lunch.

We booked The Master Cutler for a friend’s birthday. From start to finish, the whole experience was truly, “First Class”. This is absolutely how to run a heritage railway, providing hospitality to a high standard yet not forgetting the line’s history and tradition. The staff, from Andrew our driver to the platform team, the on-train waiting ladies and the refreshment room bar were all so friendly and welcoming. Nothing was left to chance. An excellent wine list accompanied the delicious four courses and we all agreed it was an unforgettable experience and one to be repeated again soon. The GCR has gained more new friends.

If you've ever wanted to drive a steam locomotive then don't look any further than here. We were so well looked after all through the day by Andy (the host) and on the drive by Richard and (another) Andy. I was really nervous about driving, but I had no need to be, Richard was there right behind me the whole time until I got the hang of it then I could drive it without him needing to tell me what to do. The best bit was blowing the whistle! Great fun. We had a tour of the signal box, then lunch on a train, then a tour of the loco shed before being presented with a certificate and complimentary Friends membership for 12 months. A great day out which I will never forget.

Bought a table for 4 to celebrate a family birthday… and the whole experience faultless.
We had a two hour meal on the steam train Carolean as it traveled between Leicester North and Loughborough.
The comfort of the train was excellent. The food outstanding. Great quality, plentiful and most importantly, where expected served piping hot. I was informed the food is cooked on the train from scratch by the chef and not shipped in!
The serving staff are commendable. So positive, engaging and totally customer focussed.
It was nice to explore the stations and museum.
Nothing negative to say.

I went to the GCR to view the steam locomotives, rather than to ride on the train. I was interested to see both the operational and under restoration engines. The website advertises "Supervised access (to the loco shed) is available on most running days".
This is most definitely not the case. I was told both by the Ticket office clerk and the Station master that access was only allowed on two days a month. Not the day I was there! Website makes no mention of this that I could see.
There were 5 engines outside the shed, but I couldn't see anything inside it.
£4 platform ticket and 100 miles worth of diesel wasted as I'll have to go back on one of the depot tour dates. Why these aren't the same days as the Station tours escapes me...?

Large free car park right next to Rothley station with lovely cafe and picnic tables outside. Large free car park next to Quorn station. Small free car park next to Leicester North.
